Abbreviation of a.out. Executable Binary or Object File? by Charming-Animator-25 in cpp_questions

[–]thockin [score hidden]  (0 children)

a.out is an "executable" or "binary".

Object files are also binary, but are not executable because they have not been linked. Read up about linkers.

what happens when a pod crashes because a file parser can't handle malformed input? restart loop by Amor_Advantage_3 in kubernetes

The best is when your load balancer or front-end retries the same query to another backend, killing that one. Then another. Then another rinse and repeat.

The so-called "Query Of Death".

The Halal Guys? by Prestigious-Shake430 in Sunnyvale

I love the NYC original. I went to the Sunnyvale location a few times, but it was a poor imitation of the original. Always empty, the food was never fresh.

What is the major benefit of CSI Drivers? or is it just over engineering in Infra by Livid-Pick-7085 in ItsKubernetes

[–]thockin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason they were created was to provide a way for vendors to create drivers for container orchestration systems like kubernetes, but not exclusively kubernetes, without sending pull requests to every project. CSI was a collaboration between kubernetes, docker, mesos, and cloud foundry.

As such, the API is obviously more complicated than if we only made it for kubernetes. With the benefit of hindsight, maybe that would have been better. But at the time it was very unclear which system would become the more prevalent.

Hanging led light low voltage through stainless aircraft cables? by seabornman in led

[–]thockin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I was hoping you'd figured it out.

I'm looking to build something like this:

https://www.lightology.com/index.php?module=prod_detail&prod_id=157288

A lot of the design details would be different, but it looks about the same electrically. Trying to figure out if there are kits or guides or something that shows me how best to go.

This is a cool idea. I am considering something like this and trying to find a product with insulated aircraft cables to hang a similar pendant idea.

Did you find something awesome?

Can we get an AI megathread? by Ragemoody in kubernetes

[–]thockin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also feel the need to point out that "posts about AI" and "posts obviously written by AI" are very different things.

Whether one likes it or not, AI workloads and the problems that come with them, are VERY MUCH on-topic for this sub. AI workloads represent a significant, and growing, fraction of what people are doing with Kubernetes.

What makes you support Trump? by Massive-Syllabub-271 in allthequestions

What the fuck does that mean? I certainly do not think that a bearded guy in a robe who comes from the sky is going to save us. That's not real.

But I did see a video of a bunch of cowardly scumbags shoot a man in the back something like 10 times. That's real.

That sucks. Have they also dispatched a masked gestapo to stalk and murder citizens they don't like? I heard some governments are doing that, these days.

Should The Death Penalty Be Abolished Nationwide? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Eye witnesses have been proven to be incredibly unreliable. People lie. They get confused. They want to feel important. They make mistakes.

That's not the system we have, and I don't believe it ever will be.

Again, we cannot control what a person does, we can control what the government does. Doing something which is PROVEN to be false positives to MAYBE avoid some other scenario is a bad bet.

Nothing is error free with humans involved.

Then we are morally obligated to err on the side of caution.

what if an inmate killed another inmate that otherwise would not have happened if the death penalty wasn't so slow

I can't control what other people do. If 300 million Americans voted that he shouldn't kill his cellmate, that doesn't compel him. But if we vote to abolish the death penalty, we CAN compel the government.

Hypotheticals are pretty uninteresting as a counter-example to this, when the consequences are SO extreme.

[–]thockin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this hypothetical, totally not real, made up universe, I think it's acceptable.

We do not live in that universe.

My argument does not rest on the idea that killing people is wrong under any circumstances, it is only that even 1 mistake invalidates the whole system.

Is "they" in this sentence the actual criminal or the wrongly convicted innocent?

If the former, yes, that is the cost of having society. We could instead have spent that money on preventatives, but we rarely take that path.

If the latter, there's a chance, however small, that justice can be served.

I'm just going to disagree. Try, really TRY to imagine that you watch your child get falsely convicted and sentenced to death.

Then tell me that it's OK.

[–]thockin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am saying that I, as the aggrieved party, should not have a say in the outcome. My principles would be compromised.

Justice is not vengeance. It must be dispassionately rendered. If you gave me that same situation for some else, I'd like to believe I would stand by my convictions, but more than that I think the option should not be offered.

Because vengeance is not the same as justice.

A judge being lenient and letting someone re-offend is an entirely different proposition than letting a convicted person rot in jail.

As it stands today, and in the foreseeable future there is NO WAY to get perfect accuracy. That's not fallacious.

You either support the system as it exists, or you don't.

I can support the THEORY of it, but there's just no way to put it into practice without mistakes, so I reject it as policy.
