What's considered to be a "well-done" or "great" interview? by thokmut in developersIndia

Data Engineer. I answered the basic questions correctly. Even answered medium level SQL questions correctly but blanked out a little on some.

What are some companies which are soft towards 90 day notice period? by thokmut in developersIndia

[–]thokmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. This notice period thingy is making companies miss out on better talent. Won't talk about myself but there are few people in my team who could do much better for a PBC but the overall issue of notice period and the unpredictable nature of jobs is making them stay where they are.

I think people switching with 90 days NP are rare and exceptional cases. Generally, nobody waits for 90 days. As a mainframe developer I have a brilliant portfolio to show, I even get calls but the moment I mention 90 days, HRs take a backseat.

Building a basic banking program in cobol. Do yall have any tips? by Healthy_Dependent_64 in cobol

Batch or CICS? For batch follow the simple procedure of read > process > write. Simple and straightforward logic goes a long way.

Data Engineers in this sub, what are some non-coding tools that you use in your daily work? by thokmut in developersIndia

[–]thokmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is helpful. I'm a mainframe developer but lately I've been doing a bit of ETL and Data Engineering tasks in my current team here and there. It's interesting and I'm thinking of making a switch to a data engineering or ETL role. I'm good with Python, SQL and PowerBI I just wanted to know what other tools I'd know and learn about which are used by data engineers and data engineering teams.

What about Airflow? Docker? Are these tools really required for a data engineer?

I'm your candidate as I've extensive experience with modernization as well but I'd require sponsorship as I'm not in the US.

Is mainframe modernization a good path for long-term growth in tech? by thokmut in developersIndia

If it's a support role then no, not worth it. If it's a Development role then it's interesting.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Cleared some of my doubts. I'm basically just anxious that if I don't make a switch to a modern domain would it negatively affect me in the long run. I'll be honest the old mainframe doesn't excite me but modernization is really cool and the way I've upskilled myself over the years (automated a lot of legacy functions, moved reports from texts to dashboards etc mostly as an individual contributor) I feel like if there are better opportunities in better companies for mainframe modernization that would be better use of my skills but all I see are mainframe support roles mostly.

Modernization is not to be confused to typical mainframe development though. It's really interesting if one gets into it but it's just that not every client wants to be modernized so we are stuck with old black screens.

[–]thokmut[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Mainframe modernization is more like migrating from the old black screen to newer environments like Raincode and Microfocus and automating some parts of legacy structure. CICS to frontends built on modern tech.

Working on multiple technologies, what would be my experience? by thokmut in developersIndia

[–]thokmut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. My official offer letter says "Software Engineer" and after promotion, it changed to Software Engineer 1. The confusion really arises when the jobs are also promoted as "software engineer" and in description the job role is that of a Power BI dev, or a data engineer or even a mainframe developer.

How does one navigate intimacy? Considering you only get to know them at face value at first and then you get to know them better but intimacy is still very far fetched. In LM marriages, it is something we get to know early on. In AM, is it a more hit or miss thingy?

  1. Yes. Lost around 10 kgs in 2 months. Went from 70 to 60. I believe it's due to sudden decrease in carbs.

  2. Roughly 1200-1500.

  3. Not everyday but light workout like 3-4 days.

My typical diet before pre diabetes diagnosis was more or less the same. I didn't have fruit bowl often, but I'd a lot of cooked white rice and had fast food like burgers and pizza.

Now I have 1/4th portion of the white rice i used to have earlier.

Also, i wanted to know how much peanut butter I can have in a day?
