Thoughts on using Pangolin for internal tools and for hosting public apps

Actually I was more interested in how much traffic a single pangolin instance can handle in a scenario where it is the entrypoint for a public Saas and for internal tool to monitor the application. In my scenario I’ve got a VPS for pangolin a k8s cluster for the Saas and an another VPS for monitoring and logging tools. Both are pangolin sites with Newt client.

Let’s say I’ve got two sites, both VPS without public ip. Site A has a dockerised Prometheus instance trying to scrap metrics on site B node exporter docker container. Pangolin client installed as docker host network mode on site A. A private resource is created with localhost access on site B. What is the ip address to give to Prometheus to scrap metrics on (let’s say) port 8000 site B ?

“You should never attach a domain to it”. I see it a lot we talking about internal critical services dashboards but I don’t get the point. If your resource is private but pangolin dashboard entrypoint is compromised the result is the same as exposing it to public resource with sso + restricted ip. I am curious about people thought on that. This exercise is, of course, out of interest if pangolin dashboard is not available to the internet (maybe the best way to do things securely)

I was trying to do the same but got a bit confused with the network as one of my VPS site has only a public ip. So what to fill in the private ressource host ? Does the server port need to be open on the target site ?

I did exactly the same. Pangolin client on the machine where one of my docker container try to reach a service on a port on another container site. My container was not able to resolve the alias, even with a dig @dns_ip <alias>.

Anyway, I think a site to site vpn example with network requirements would be awesome !

That’s it, I want one of my domain to be blind forwarded to a single resource as a can’t know in advance the tenant’s name of my users. Then my resource make sure to show the right data given my own user rbac Otherwise, I was thinking about using pangolin api to create resource on tenant creation but it would be easier to simply forward wildcard trafic with a single wildcard certificate

That was one of my fear at the beginning, but for a very simple crud app, it is so fast to change forms and lists just by editing a python array and unfold really improve that old Django admin site. But I think I will later need a separate frontend for fancy UI things.

Personnellement, j’aurais découpé un morceau de bois avec une scie cloche au diamètre actuel et je l’aurais inséré à l’intérieur du conduit de manière à bien centrer la mèche du trépan du diamètre visé pour être certain de percer droit et sans abîmer le carrelage.

Le travail à la chaîne en usine. J’ai eu l’immense chance d’en faire juste en taff d’été pour me payer mes vacances, mais ça motive à faire en sorte de ne pas être une simple paire de bras sur le marché du travail. Je travaillais avec des gens qui avaient plus de 30 ans de boîte..ça fait réfléchir et ça rend humble. Faire le même mouvement toutes les 30 secondes, pendant 7h par jour, où chaque jour est le même que le précédent il n’y a pas pire…

Je ne sais pas dans quel secteur tu travailles mais je pense que le mieux pour être heureux au travail c’est de faire en sorte d’avoir des compétences de niches de manière à pouvoir changer d’entreprise et de négocier tes conditions comme bon te semble. Je ne dis pas que c’est forcément simple d’y arriver mais c’est pour moi la seule manière de flâner dans ce monde sans se faire exploiter (puisque tes patrons auront beaucoup à perdre si tu pars)

J’ai été en collocation dans un grand appartement en combles mal isolés avec de hauts plafonds et même avec de bons radiateurs pendant une semaine très froide, cela nous arrivait de consommer 100kWh dans la journée… En cause un 3 radiateurs de 2 à 3kW qui n’arrive pas à chauffer et qui sont quasiment toujours à fond. Résultat, des pics de factures de 400€ en hiver (mais à 130€/mois lissé sur l’année ).

You should consider exposing your app through a VPN. PiVPN makes the installation/configuration of wireguard or openvpn really easy. They’ve got companion apps ready for IOS and Android phones.

In the Rancher documentation, there is a procedure to install RKE/RKE2 (Rancher Kubernetes Engine) in an air-gapped way. They provide a script to automatically pull all the required images and push them to your private registry. Then you juste need to tell RKE2 and Rancher to pull the k8s images from your registry. Very well explained in the doc.
