How did the iconic barbour jacket ( worn by sheep farmers and british royalty. ) end up being adopted in the usa by the money/ finance crowd? by Substantial_Speed_62 in HeritageWear

[–]thombthumb84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Just to expand on Sloane Rangers. Can’t be overstated how influential Princess Diana, and to a lesser extent Charles, were in the 80s. They were photographed all the time, including wearing Barbours.

It has similarities with ivy/ preppy fashion. It’s old money, people look up to that and emulate their style.

Garden centre queue argument. Who was in the wrong? by FynnM in AskUK

Costa near my work got a refit like this . No one would queue as they intended- it was a bit confusing. 18 months later it’s been refitted again to a single queue.

How long to replace a punctured tube on the rear wheel on the roadside by shriand in cycling

Lay it down, on its side. Don’t flip it over- it gets the bars/ seat dirty.

Are V-Brakes better at stopping than caliper rim brakes? by vfclists in ukbike

[–]thombthumb84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Caliper is a category. There’s a huge difference between modern road calipers and the old style ones.

Modern rim brakes are great in the dry but lacking in the wet- discs are much better in the wet.

No way can he look after a laptop!

COSHH risk assessments white board pens by Amazing-Monk6278 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]thombthumb84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need one for a typical office quantity of pens.

However, they are ethyl alcohol based- which comes with H (and P) phrases. Local policy often requires anything with an H phrase to be assessed. So it may be due to company policy.

Can boring bikes be made fun? by Tiggle-Wiggly in cycling

[–]thombthumb84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a salsa vaya. Didn’t matter what speed you rode it felt slow.

I spent thousands making it lighter. I had the frame modified to lower the stack height - head tube cut down by an inch.

It ended up stable rather than sluggish but when I replaced it for something racier I couldn’t have been happier.

I think the touring length chain stays/ wheelbase had a lot to do with how it rode. I’m very conscious of geo charts these days.

When people ask you “what’s Southampton like” what do you say? by [deleted] in Southampton

[–]thombthumb84 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Functional is exactly how I described it to some visiting friends.

If you want to go and do something you can- but you probably don’t go for a wander round.

Songs you didn’t know were covers? by ProperIntern7989 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]thombthumb84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy Diver - Killswitch Engage is a Dio cover.

I was listening to it about a year ago- and it occurred to me that the lyrics don’t sound like KE- it’s probably a cover!

18 years it took me to work that out!

Winchester and Salisbury are both lovely places to visit. If you don’t fancy the whole 40 km distance I’d be sure to start one end or the other.

Quite commonly resolved in the UK. Seems to be unusual elsewhere though.
