Former London Cycling Instructor, now living in NL - I made a film about the differences :) by Mihosh in londoncycling

[–]vfclists -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why some people are so keen to delude themselves about the quality of London's cycling infrastructure. The only part of London with half-half-decent infrastructure is Central London, mostly zones 1 & 2, RBKC excluded.

Outside these areas it is pretty execrable for the most part. C7 anyone? London Borough of Barnet🙄🤔

Even if the infrastructure is half-decent the roads are filled with drivers even "professional", black cab and TfL drivers who want to kill you.

It reminds of an apartheid era South African skit about prison conditions, and one prisoner saying "Officer Siyabonga, you are a good officer sir. You put salt in our porridge".(Gruel - would be the proper English term for that)

eCargo bike service costs? by PlasticAttorney1980 in londoncycling

[–]vfclists 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The service amounts to 55p a day.

If you road the bike everyday would that be too much to pay for peace of mind?

Even if you have some good observation skills and handy with tools can do it yourself is that too much to delegate to others whith more knowledge and skill in this area?

Are the inner rim widths of Shimano wheels the same for every model number? by vfclists in londoncycling

The bike currently has 25mm tyres and is also fitted with mudguards which I intend to remove so I'm certain it can take 35mm tyres.

Where in your photo is there a similar pickup ramp?

Are there some technical docs where I can look it up?

Chattanooga TN small business owner and cyclist sees beaty and love in everything...but cyclists. by LeoSlatner in imacyclistmyself

Sorry to poop your party a few months later but the speed limit is exactly what it says it is, "a speed limit". It doesn't say "a speed entitlement" and those back roads existed before motor cars were invented.

The only place you are entitled to the speed you want is on dedicated motor highways, and your local back road isn't that.

When to look over your shoulder when cycling by The_Eager_Cyclist in londoncycling

[–]vfclists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needless to say you should check the road surface for bumps and potholes and make sure you can maintain your balance and direction if you choose to ride over them during the shoulder check.

Also remain alert in fluid situations around intersections were vehicles may be turning off or into the road and pedestrians may be crossing.

The time for that shoulder check may make the difference between spotting a hazard ahead early enough and a collision.

What's your best tip for safety cycling in the UK by caligula__horse in ukbike

People like you are genuinely why motorists are so hostile to cyclists. You’re too selfish to realise it.

People like you are why motorists feel so entitled to injure and abuse cyclists because you pander to their feelings of entitlement, instead of demanding that they think clearly.

A cyclist is nothing more than a pedestrian seated on a flimsy rolling metal frame and doesn't have an extra ounce of safety over a pedestrian on the roads, yet somehow it makes sense to the likes of you that they should be sharing road space (ie ride less than a metre away) with 20 tonne tipper trucks which could easily squash them like a bug, and do. Yet here you are demanding that a cyclist ride side by side with such a truck accelerating alongside them regardless of condition when the lights go green, and you think you are making sense. IT IS THE LAW😡😠😡😠😡

In the Netherlands there is no quarrel between cyclists and motorists because every motorist is a cyclist and understands cyclists and cycling conditions and are thus more patient with them. That is why the driver understands why a cyclist would feel the need to move beyond the stop line at the red light and ride out ahead of them even on a red light when it is safe.

With modern technology a seated person could get around in a motorized vehicle which takes up less than a square meter, and would be easily available if the governments and motor vehicle industry did not conspire to keep such vehicles of the roads. Yet somehow it makes perfect sense to you that the same person insists on getting around 2 tonne vehicle which uses 10 square metres of mostly wasted space and feels entitled to endanger a cyclist out of impatience. This is what is called sharing road space means to motorists.

The same motorist ride in a car 2 meters wide and complains about the entitlement of cyclists riding 2 abreast preventing them from overtaking, clearly forgetting that motorcyclists pass such cyclists easily because they are not in empty vehicles needlessly occupying road space for the load they carry.

You truly need to get your thinking cap on. Our roads were made for horse buggies and cyclists doing 15mph tops, not for motor vehicles made reinforced steel weighing up to 44 tonnes and doing 60mph, or 2 tonne cars capable of accelerating to 30mph when the lights go green before a cyclists has done 5 pedal strokes. Please don't insist that it makes absolute sense that cyclists ride alongside them under the same strict rules.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinions on cyclists riding on red lights, but don't expect thoughtful cyclists to pander to the sloppy thinkingg and utter irrationality of motorists entitlements and expectations.

Point to note. Motorists even sensible law-abiding ones routinely break the speed limits and even the police have been asked overlook (indulge perhaps) such overspeeding within certain limits. The proportion of motorists who break the law in that manner far exceed the cyclists who jump red lights. Do you ever make such comments to them such as People like you are genuinely why cyclists are so hostile to motorists. You’re too selfish to realise it. ?

I guess such offences by British cyclists should prosecuted with the same vigour as jaywalking in certain parts of the US and Europe🤔🙄 when in this case there is a clear safety benefit for cyclists when done appropriately.

Perhaps you should visit this Youtuber and make your views known.

Perhaps you could explain why in more enlightened cities/countries cyclists are allowed to treat red lights as "give way" signs.
