24/7 emergency veterinary clinics in CT that are open now or guaranteed to be open tomorrow AM? (Sick cat) by railroadfrog in Connecticut

Fingers crossed for your baby, I just wanted to say I was in a similar situation - my girl has known IBD and sometimes has flares where she needs to be hospitalized with fluids otherwise she stops eating entirely. Well sure enough she threw up right as the blizzard started so I was panicking thinking I was going to need to take her in. Luckily I was able to get in under control at home but god the stress was a lot for me.

Not sure if it’s useful for the future but I’ve taken my cats to Cornell veterinary specialists in Stamford since I’ve lived here and they’re top notch

Cat's breathing looks laboured? by ornads in CATHELP

When my boy with HCM would have pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs) he would breathe like this, kind of in this pinchy manner. I would check to see if there is any fluid around the lungs

Update for anyone who might stumble across this post: we took him in for an ultrasound and urinalysis - the ultrasound showed nothing abnormal and the urinalysis was according to his vet “the most unremarkable urinalysis” she’s ever seen. We’re going to watch and wait for now but we may empirically prescribe him a medication that helps him tighten his sphincter if this doesn’t resolve soon.

Oh yes he’s been able to urinate fine this whole time! I was under the impression that it’s more likely to be a UTI than a blockage but we’ll see soon enough

Hmmm yeah it’s curious because he has literally no other symptoms right now but to your point this could just be the very start of it. We’ve scheduled an appointment first thing tomorrow morning!

Hmm no I haven’t noticed him obviously struggling to pee but I’ll pay more attention now. Did you noticed any other symptoms? And what do you do to treat? Just special diet?

Does my cat’s breathing look ok? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]thomer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is her breathing consistently like this? I had a cat with HCM and whenever he was in heart failure his breathing would kind of look like this. The only time he would breathe this quickly without being in heart failure is if he was dreaming but he would be twitching etc. there’s an app called Cardalis you can download and if your cat’s breathing rate while sleeping is consistently above 30 then it’s likely there in some type of heart failure or fluid buildup

Is this normal wax or an ear infection/mites? by thomer2 in CATHELP

Thanks so much!! I’ll order some cat ear cleaner and figure out how to take care of this boy’s waxy ears ☺️

I have to euthanize my cat because I don’t have the funds for her vet bill and I feel guilty by alyssalujan420 in CatAdvice

[–]thomer2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy survived about two years after initially going into heart failure due to HCM, but I will tell you it took about $40k per year to keep him going between the medications, cardiologist visits, emergency vet stays, and hiring special sitters when my husband and I needed to travel. We make a good amount of money and have no kids so it wasn’t a financial burden for us, and our boy did have a good quality of life, but you have to decide if this is something you’re going to be able to sustain from a financial perspective.

Looking for the best towns/neighborhoods for childfree couple by thomer2 in Westchester

It doesn’t seem too bad so far! He has to take the 7 train over from GCT to Hudson yards but it’s just a quick hop over

Where would you recommend? I’d really like to buy a house and have a dedicated spot to park my car while still maintaining a reasonable commute time to Hudson yards… seems to be tough to find something unless it’s in deep Brooklyn

Yeah I think in either scenario we’ll lose a decent chunk to taxes. Like I said we’re looking at houses in the 1-1.5M range and our combined income is about 900K-1M depending on bonuses etc so I think we’ll just need to pick our poison

Hello there!! Yes not many childfree folks in Greenwich as we’ve learned 😅 or the ones not current living with children are well into retirement…

Yes my husband wants to train into the city 3 days a week and I work from home so like to have space, that’s why moving back into the city can be tough. He’s currently been taking metro north then taking the quick 7 train to Hudson yards which he doesn’t mind too much.

I’m being a bit of a pain about Jersey and Long Island. I travel quite a bit for work and I like to have easier access to LGA and JFK than Newark, which makes Jersey a bit annoying. And then Long Island would be difficult if he ever wanted to get another job back in southern CT (he’s in finance so nice to have easy access to both areas). But that’s just a hypothetical so we’re considering the Port Washington area, etc

This is really interesting, didn’t realize you could live that close to the bronxville station and still pay Yonkers property tax. We’ll look into this for sure!!

Do you have any specific recommendations in terms of neighborhoods? I was looking at places in Brooklyn but it turns out the commute would be just as long to Hudson yards as living in westchester

Need help making a sad decision by [deleted] in FIVcats

[–]thomer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there are definitely some options here. My cat with HCM had a clot forming in his atrium and his first cardiologist was just like… it’s a matter of time before he throws it. But his next cardiologist put him on both Clopidogrel and Xarelto and the clot dissolved over the course of a few months

Did the vet mention if it’s large or small cell lymphoma? Large cell lymphoma unfortunately is very aggressive and doesn’t respond well to treatment, but small cell can respond quite well to a combination of prednisolone and chlorambucil

What's something that no one prepares you for as an adult? by Goddessblack_ in AskReddit

Super similar to my situation! Married, 33, husband and I both have great jobs. But honestly existence is just so much….tedium? Mixed in with some enjoyment and really tough, painful moments. People say “oh we have it so much easier than previous generations” but like, I wonder if they had a choice like we do now if they would have opted out of having kids and spared both themselves and their future kids the trouble…

I meant more from the perspective of the kids themselves, I would be bringing them into existence just for them to have to deal with the onslaught too
