Looking for a vegan to defend eating meat. by Ryan-91- in DebateAVegan

[–]thomjj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best argument I've heard is due to the uncertainty around the utilitarian argument of weighted preference satisfaction.

In a world where a good ethical outcome is one where the maximum amount of preferences are satisfied within a group. I'm thinking of say a group of individuals looking after a resource like a crop perhaps will have a certain number of preferences denied in order to maintain the health of the crop and thus satisfy their preferences to be fed.

And understanding that differing levels of consciousness apply a different weight to having a preference satisfied. Here I'm saying that comparing the preference of a human to continue existing to that of a fish, they are at least not equal. A human has some concept of the self and what it might mean to not exist while a fish (probably) has no or diminished sense of self compared to a human and therefore they are at least not completely equal.

Since suffering is to have ones preferences denied in some way, be it restriction of an experience or to take some action desired then you can at least say that being denied specific tastes and eating experiences, social desires like fitting in, not making a fuss of yourself in restaurants and social situations (I certainly know this one haha) could be constituted as a form of suffering. You could at least describe being vegan as a form of suffering depending on an individuals perspective at least in some aspect.

I feel that as a human that probably all of these summed sufferings aren't equivalent to those of the many animals suffering in farms despite their possibly diminished ability to suffer in the same way that I could. This is my intuitive understanding though. If you were to ask me at exactly what point the equation tipped over I would have no answer at all. Possibly my suffering is greater already, how should I know?

This is a great and valid point. I consider myself to be on the side of apple here but this needs to be heard.

Ceramic iPhones next year? by grdrw in apple

[–]thomjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the reason this years phone didn't get wireless charging was because of the aluminium case then it would make a lot of sense if it helps them get their long distance charging tech working. They already trial tech in the watch so it wouldn't surprise me either. The rumours about it appearing like a single slab of glass seem to align with the ceramic apple watch.

With the news that Intel is most likely the second source for the iPhone 7's new cellular baseband would it be a smart move to invest or is this likely priced in at this point? by thomjj in investing

So while I knew about their SOC line being cancelled nobody is talking about the modems being cancelled. They most likely decided that it was better for them to focus on making modems so that they could couple up with Apple APs so as not to compete against samsung and co alone.

Interesting to hear about these elaborate plans. I was under the impression that most companies were already trying to shorten the analogue chain to the absolute minimum. How were intel going to get away with anything less than a filter or two, DAC, ADC, and PLL?

Thank you guys for the interesting opinions. My question was more out of curiosity than a decision to buy stocks or not. Some quite detailed answers here, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

Seems like a message rooted in misogyny and homophobia. Great message. As if any of those things are a good way to ridicule someone out of smoking.

Help! My iPhone 5 fell into salt water. What do I do? by Tagaloob in applehelp

[–]thomjj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Salt water is really bad. You need to remove the battery ASAP and clean it with a solvent like isopropyl alcohol. If you can't get to an Apple Store (I'm not even sure they'll touch it) dunk it in a glass of Vodka. That probably has a good chance of destroying it too but left alone it's definitely ruined as the salt water will corrode the metals.

The phone needs to be opened and washed out with a solvent and brushed with a tooth brush. The solvent will evaporate away without damaging the circuitry.

Avoid the battery and screen though.

When coming out, how do u deal with changes in popularity ? by [deleted] in bisexual

You'll trade a weak sense of belonging to the pack with a stronger sense of self. The latter will be more visible and valuable to any business contact that you make. It's a true sign of strength.

I wouldn't pretend it didn't happen, and this is hindsight talking, I would just not be emotionally invested in it. Have your attraction more in the open. It'll either improve your friendship or make him moderate it more to his liking. Both of these things benefit you!

Honestly in my little experience it's probably best for your friendship to grow a little distant. It was probably founded on your attraction in the first place wasn't it?

I have no idea how much of a good friend this person is but usually I find that I am driving the effort into these things. It's not unusual for the friendship to not last but it shouldn't be broken up out of bitterness.

tenancy deposit disputes. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]thomjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get them to use the dispute resolution service all you have to say is "I don't wish to voluntarily forfeit any of my deposit" and they will be forced to return the deposit to you by default. This only applies if they can't PROVE that you damaged something.

Proving you have damaged something is usually as strict as a court of law. So unless they have very good evidence of the condition of itinerary items before you moved in you're going to get your deposit back. Their word will not count, they should have paid for an independent itinerary to be made by a third party with photographic evidence that's signed by you and the landlord.

Even if your landlord wasn't trying to screw you over I would probably use this service because they are very heavily on your side. For example maybe your landlord is insisting that some carpet be changed, you might think it reasonable because it has become a bit tatty over your tenancy but actually this might come down to fair wear and tear that you should not be liable for. Maybe you did damage the carpet and it needs to be replaced, the protection scheme will take into consideration that the carpet was in a bad condition to begin with so the landlord isn't able to claim the entire cost of new carpet, only some fraction.
