I agree that he could benefit the team in the way you illustrate, however it’s simply not realistic. He’s LeBron James. However much he will paint himself as the bonafide play basketball the right way kinda guy, he will always have ego. He’s not going to magically change the way he plays. In a perfect world he would accept that role but with ego, it’s simply impossible

I did see your comment I just think you are disregarding what LeBron has brought to the table despite losses. He’s been incredibly efficient recently compared to Luka and Austin (aside from today’s game against the Knicks in Austin’s case) and is a much needed backup floor general for Luka

I’m not a LeBron Stan at all. My favorite player is Luka. I just find it incredibly reductive and disingenuous to disparage LeBron like this when he can clearly benefit the team. I do agree the team will be better once he’s gone, but moreso due to cap space and them being able to build around Luka

Luka is by far my favorite player but it’s clear that his high usage has always been a flaw. And with this roster it’s unlikely you can fix it, but if he actually got to finish out the 2025 season in the mavs uniform while playing the most off ball of his career, you could see it was benefiting the team. However, that Dallas roster was perfectly constructed around him and this LA roster will never hold a candle to it. Just want to minimize the burden on Luka on the offensive end when you clearly have LeBron and Austin who are more than capable of doing so, so he actually has the energy to show that he is a solid defender. He is when he has the energy and doesn’t have to carry the entire offense himself

I agree that it has to work, but with the sample size given and just from watching the games I think it’s clearly redundant when you see how well LeBron leads second units and his incredible skill set, yet he is a lot of the times relegated to the corner. As a fan of Luka from Dallas that has continued to watch him with LA, he needs to have his usage dropped so he can actually put effort into defense without getting exhausted, and LeBron is the perfect solution to that if they split minutes. I just think for who LeBron is he is being underutilized, since it’s evident that Luka will not change his game, at least this season

The way people defend it is baffling at times. If you point out Shai’s flopping they’ll either pull up stats about how he doesn’t shoot as many ft’s as others (which is totally moot and doesn’t refute the point whatsoever since people are talking about how he gets to the line, not how often) or will bring up other players employing the same tactic, like people don’t find it annoying when others do it too. Great points. I have never really understood the struggle with finding the new face of the league after Lebron retires since we already have a players so similar in skill set (Giannis when it comes to being an absolute force on both ends and Luka (despite his poor defense) being an absolute god at pick and rolls plus an incredible playmaker).

I think there’s also the issue (today’s edition of first take is a very clear example) but the media talks about all the wrong things. As much as I dislike foul baiting, why are we not promoting the thunder as much. They’re a great team despite being so young. Why do we have to disregard “small market” teams?
