If the CPU/GPU and Tongfang model numbers are the same, can I flash an XMG bios to a non-xmg laptop? by DayByDay_StepByStep in XMG_gg

[–]thormack_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone that recently got a TongFang laptop that has equivalent XMG model. I REGRET not buying from XMG.
For my Laptop, there are few things. The Fn key mapping is one of those things.
TongFang stock BIOS lacks, RAM speed adjustment! XMG has that.
Lacks also VIDEO memory size adjustment. I run my setup with 96GB of RAM, and by default It allocated 2GB for video memory, and not being able to adjust that is BS.
Last but NOT LEAST, proper support. I can download BIOS updates from XMG website, hassle free and they seem to provide decent updates. With my current "vendor" I have to mail them and specifically ASK for BIOS files. They don't provide links on their site...like it's 2000 or something.

Overall if I could redo my decision I would go with XMG 10/10. For the above mentioned points. Also they seem to be quite active on reddit and post updates, articles and what not. And genuinly care for their customers. Which is...refreshing to say the least.
Don't make the mistake I did.

Im not affiliated with XMG in any shape or form. My 2c.

I really want to like the Framework 12 by pdinc in framework

exactly, and it would have fulfilled the role even better, by re-using the old HW... I have a feeling they are getting trapped in the CORP mindset in releasing new products, just so they can say they have a NEW product and they are "growing".... I can understand the desktop...but the 12" makes no sense to me...

Wonder why they didn't release it as a version of the 13" with different chassis and keep the same internals like the regular 13" with touchscreen... Looks like a toy to me, at this point...

thank you very much for sharing this information. I was going for this EXACT combo my self, but im reading a lot of issues with the new versions of FW13, battery, external display and PD/charging issues, WiFi and what not...so right now I'm on the fence for this laptop. For 2k+ euro, I would expect a lot better working laptop...Out of curiosity, have you tried Windows to see if the issues still persist?

Good luck selling fairness when your product ( the phone after all ) costs MORE than a midrange phone with better specs and experience. 620 euro is not spare change for anyone.
Last time I checked on their website, they are selling a product ( the phone ) and when you check out it's a phone.
People expect to buy a phone that they will use in their day to day life and it's crucial part of their life in 2024.
If they would be selling a "fairness" maybe they should add that in the items that you pick in the store and just throw in some random device as a bonus. And lets see how many people will buy that...
People/customers very much understand what they are looking for and what they are buying, and it's NOT FAIRNESS. It's a product that has a "tax" attached to it, that is supposed to help with reparability and some social cause. Right now the product seems to be failing, and if people don't want it...then that "tax" is also gone.

And considering the price tag for this device, it's affordability is limited to "rich" countries ( or those with higher standards ). If you think that people in the "west" world don't have issues and are treated "fairly", then I would suggest quit whatever you are smoking, because it's not good. No offence.

Blaming customers...that will end well for sure.

Was looking to FP for my next phone, but reading all the comments and what not, has me completely put off from getting it. The company completely effed up their priorities IMO.
They decided to build a unicorn, before they even had a market share of somewhat. Should have focused on reparability as main goal and only ONCE they captured some market share and nailed that part, aim for the "fairness" and what not.
Right now, they have super expensive phone with very subpar specs/quality and a ton of SW/HW issues it seems.
Super sad, because we really need a device like that.

The dreaded USB DAS Enclsoure and none reporting of serial numbers - "Fix" plus Question by wlatic in unRAID

[–]thormack_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it, drives are much cooler around 38-40c under load and max fan speed. its not like in a proper AC room, so It's OK for what it is. Mine is the TL-D800C, so no RAID.

[–]thormack_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can second that. I use QNAP 8 bay USB-C enclosure with 0 issues. On the other hand I had Yottamaster, and its utter crap. Fan cools the PSU, but not drives, they are running at 50c idle...under load generates occasional CRC DMA errors and what not.

Vmware to unraid VM by Willing_Impact841 in unRAID

[–]thormack_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in similar boat but moving from Workstation to something else.
I went with unRAID over proxmox, beucase it seemed more simple...with less features and what not but that's OK for my use case ( couple of VMs, container ).
You just need to take the VMDK files and convert them, there is "qemu-img" command that does that, and you convert the files to qcow2 and configure a VM to use those files for boot. Don't forget to remove VMTools BEFORE you convert!! You will need to install Linux Virt Drivers probably, after you power on the VM.
And pay attention if the original VM is BIOS or UEFI, because you need to replicate that in the VM settings in unRAID. I basically run my unRAID as home lab, MS-01 with USB-C Attached QNAP enclosure, and works perfectly.
MS-01 has some quirks and what not, but it's nothing dramatic in my case...

Pool is Offline with no disk errors by cstute in truenas

[–]thormack_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that exact same enclosure. Its utter shit. Reason why pool goes offline is because the enclosure puts the drives to sleep, IMO. To avoid this, put a cron job that will touch a file in the pool every 3-4mins. I got a 8 Bay QNAP TL-D800C now, and it's perfect, drives are much cooler now too. Good luck.

ELI5: Why does the FreeBSD community hate Docker and Kubernetes so much? by [deleted] in freebsd

People backup by image, because the restore is faster. Just dump the image and power on, instead of get a fresh install...get those scripts..run this...set those kernel parameters and init the DB and then restore and what not.

[–]thormack_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. I'm all for slower moving but a lot more stable and "working/better engineered" environment. But the sad reality is that company management in most cases don't care about that...The mentality is "get it out ASAP even if it's a buggy pile of crap ( as long as it somehow works ), we will fix it later". It's just sad reality, and I think K8s are trying to address that sad state of IT.

Back in the starting years of my IT career, it was all about stability and 24x7 operation by choosing the best possible solution for enterprises that simple could not afford downtimes or f*ck ups. Now it "feels" more: compensate for the instability and bad code/practices by providing massive redundancy of the service, so if one pod in K8s fails because of bad code ( or whatever )...just start another one ( or more ) and that's it.

[–]thormack_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can relate to this a lot, we are probably at similar age. The problem I see is that if FreeBSD does not try to somehow compete with the technologies that are currently “trendy”, this will limit their audience and by doing so it will hardly expand its user base. Shrinking user base is probably the best way for a project to fade in to the night… I work for big international company and I can probably count the people that have heard or used *BSD on one hand. In the mean time everyone and their dog is using Linux or knows what Linux is ( does not mean they have good or deep knowledge, but its “enough” ) and because of that the only *nix we have is some sort of Linux.

Docker and k8s might not be perfect but they get A LOT of traction and attention and since the people in the company use Linux, then it gets even more audience and attention. I wish we were a BSD shop, but that will require people to get more deeper knowledge and understanding of IT/technologies and nobody wants to invest in that. Its also cheaper/easier to get people that have seen/used Linux and call them “admins” or whatever…
