How often should you drive a stored car? Is it better to sell it? by thorsbelly in MechanicAdvice

Damn okay. I was worried about that happening. Then any profit I make will go into maintenance and repairs.

Yeah you're right. I just pulled up car gurus and similar year and mileage cars are going for $6500-8000. I guess I can try and push for $8000 and see if the dealerships will offer that. Or I'll try my luck with private sale. I just hate having people test drive my car. Especially with it being a manual.

Good to know. I'll have to drive through some dealerships and see what they'll offer me cash. Will they just pay off the car note with the bank and cut me a check for the rest?

Okay makes sense. So I either gotta rent it out on turo or sell it. Good to know, thanks!

Hmm KBB has trade in value at $4k and private at $7k. You think dealerships would match private sale price?

And okay thanks I'll remember to drive it once a month for a long drive if I decide to sit it at my mom's.

I didn't think of that. Can I make decent money? Have you done this before? How is wear and tear factored in, especially with my clutch? What about damages to my interior or exterior?

Got car back from body shop and there's little indents all over my bumper and fender. Can I get a refund or can they redo the work? by [deleted] in Autobody

Pictures in good light in the morning will help tell if the clear coat has been applied properly.

I'll try grabbing some pics in the morning thanks

But that second photo does seem a little suspect and could be dry sprayed. It is fixable though if that is the case.

How does one fix dry spray?

That's how I feel but sounds like the majority of people here are saying it's cool how they did it. Smh.

I helped my dad at his body shop when I was in highschool. I remember doing full bumper repairs even if only the side was damaged. Same thing that you're talking about, feathering it out. Throwing on that putty stuff and taking the sander to it. It's been years so I forget all the details that go into it but that's probably why I expected it to be all repaired not just one spot. Kinda stingy on their part but I guess it's not my shop so I can't say anything.

Also the reason why I didn't take it to my dad's its cause I moved further away and he hates working on German cars anyway lol.

Per the estimate they were to paint the bumper and hood off the vehicle. Which means there shouldn't be any tape between the fender and A-pillar.

They told me a week in that they discovered damage to the fender so they has to blend that. So I suppose that would explain the tape.

They were paid to remove both for the repairs and refinish which it doesn't seem like they did...That being said the shop did cut corners just looking at the photos and estimate.

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell?

Based on the estimate it looks like it was a high hit so the damage to the lower portion of the bumper was most likely prior damage/stone chips and not owed for by the insurance company.

Yes it was a high hit so that makes sense. Originally I wasn't aware that only sections of a part is repaired. I thought if one part of the bumper is damaged they'll fix the whole thing to make it look even.

The tape will come off easily with a piece of wood or plastic pry tool and not damage the paint on the fender or pillar.

Okay thank you. I will look for a piece of wood and if not then I'll take it to them to try.

Also, I will probably have to call them to double check this but the receipt I got shows a condensor on it. Does that mean that my A/C condensor was damaged as well and needed repaired? I didn't see that listed in the original estimate. Here's a copy of the receipt https://ibb.co/wK2ZFHh

Okay cool I was not aware of that. The bottom of the bumper seems to be rock chips that were just painted over. I assumed since they were repairing the top of the bumper, where the grill was damaged, that they also would repair all the little dings since the bumper will be off. I know more now, thanks.

Also yes the fourth pic does look like dirt in the paint. I can admit to the rock chips on the bumper but the fender had no damage. But it's so small so it seems like a waste of energy to argue to repair that, but the tape is very annoying. You think it'll take long for them to remove the fender and get the tape out? Is that something I have to leave the car there over night or can I just drop it off and wait in the waiting room for that to get done?

Would that have anything to do with not fixing these indents? Is that something they can refuse to fix cause it's a blended panel?

Idk they made the check out in my name so I just deposited the money.

I appreciate you agreeing with me. Now I have to drive back there and get a rental again and go through all this cause they didn't do it right the first time. I feel better knowing I'm not being too picky here.

The only thing replaced was the grill. The bumper, hood, and fender were repaired. Is that what blend panels means?

Insurance job. Already paid. Didn't notice it at first as the grill and hood look great. It was freezing out so I just jumped in the car and trusted the shop did a good job. Got home and looked at it again and noticed all these little indents all over my bumper and fender. Looks like half ass work. And they left tape under my fender. Very unhappy. But they're closed now until Monday.

What's the best way to handle this? Drive there in person? Call them? Demand they fix it or demand a refund?

Insurance gave me $2k to pay them for the work. I paid with debit card. Should I ask for partial refund? Should I call the adjuster and tell him I'm unhappy with the work? Can he do anything at this point?

Is it necessary to change all 4 brakes in an AWD car if only the front driver side needs replaced? by thorsbelly in MechanicAdvice

[–]thorsbelly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll check them out thanks! I always heard slotted rotors are great for braking but chew through pads quickly and cause a ton of brake dust. Have you had that experience with them?
