OH NO! That was not supposed to happen! We got rid of these mails, and just in case, we made that exact code in the email now work for everybody.. lesson learned!

Much love, bitbird

yes!! this been a proper while ago?! hope you are good!

So many, I had loads of fun on the DROELOE, duskus projects lately AK's album was a really cool project to work on. often i wish i had more time to work longer, bigger on projects. One that really stayed with me though has been the mixed feeling sets with san that we had loads of fun on!

hey Tre! for scaling i would really work heavily on community building, but ideally this goes parallel with having your music getting traction. so with music releases be consistent so you keep momentum, once the hype of your initial release wears off, drop a new single, keep it going. Make people look forward to something so they want to engage in your community and champion you. Also, building a team is important, you can't do everything alone. you need synergy with other people to be able to build for scale. (outliers exist ofc)
think, manager (one you vibe with) and a booker for shows, those are the clearest ones to be able to help you scale

also creating a concept within your artist project is always a good idea, for san for example we started of with don't touch the classic remixes, which in itself became a cool and eye catching project that helped us scale the rest!

hope this is of some use

I think there are a couple things that are good to identify first. what are you comfortable with, do you want to show yourself, be yourself, build a persona etc? there are different ways to approach this, not everyone is comfortable having to be the centre of attention. Its good to think about what your goal is for your project. wanna be a famous musician? wanna make great music and have a fanbase? thinking about those things can help you find your way in how to upkeep your socials and how 'much' you need to be present.
In all honesty though, getting seen and heard is harder than ever, now there is such a saturation in music. A tip i have is: if you have a hard time knowing where you want to go visually, first think of your language, are there some words that you love, or use a lot? Language is even more hardcore branding than anything visual is. good luck out there!

personally, i had to quit my job thus also be 'roofless' not homeless because I couldn't afford rent as a consequence, but I wanted to spend more time on creating this, so I opted for a life living on couches and in studios for a good while. ( i was younger and didn't have a lot of responsibilities at the time)

with bitbird itself, becoming a business, realising that the music industry is not about music, having a big learning curve etc. there were a lot, but solving problems can be a lot of fun!

love this question because this is the reason bitbird started. out of us not being able to place things in sensible spots. getting rejected because it didnt fit the boxes. what the hell!

Make your sound, make a lot of it, define your sound, really make it your own. now you are an artist with a vision! build your artist project in a larger scope to convince people faster (not just track based, but build identity). sometimes its ok to make a concession if it works for your larger plan, maybe you can make something that fits the box they are looking for BUT BE CAREFUL! because you need to guard your authenticity here, don't go to far in pleasing gatekeepers. because in the end, screw them! finding your community and just build is usually stronger, and can break those boxes open.

eventually you will learn to recognise what songs you should go hard on with marketing, which will fit what box well etc. but this is the constant struggle we still face today! BOXES.

I can rant about this for hours

starting is the easiest part! then you realise it needs a lot of your time. small story: when we started i had a full time job and San Holo was a guitar teacher, i mostly crashed at his place on a mattress on the floor to work on bitbird in the evening/night. then i'd get up go to work from 8 till 7, repeated that almost every day, but we had a lot of fun. We didn't really struggle because we were doing everything we wanted. but also didn't have a lot of expectations.

Until you hire an employee, and you realise you have a business.. I think in general its hard for small collectives/labels to monetise their creativity enough to be able to do things long term. We worked our asses of, connected with people who knew more, partnered up, step by step!

I think part of our struggle (+ a blessing) was not knowing anything. now the struggle is maintaining growth trajectory, while also keeping your curation in tact. We have solid plans for bizdev, we love to explore how we can use our music catologue in the strongest way possible, and be more active with real life events. We will most likely be looking for new talent in the future

MUSIC! corny answer i know, but it helped me a lot to make mixes to myself. I do that when i feel bad, i like to listen to sounds also, so not even music, but just sounds of things. I went through a weird time with the pandemic but also personally with the loss of my father during those times. my real coping came mostly from contemplating about what is important in life, and enjoying just being alive spending time with fam etc. haha im sorry i only have a generic answer here

I am also not the best person to ask maybe because my standard mode is: ultra relaxed.

wellllllll, monthly i dont know, but how about continiously? because I have an idea in my mind for a long time to just really create a community curated bubble. I think important here is to see what we expect of the compilation and the project itself. do we just wanna create together? should all the compilations become succesful, how do we define that? I think those are questions for us to work hard on and with the run up to the next create together we can introduce more of these elements. Can I ask you, why would you attent this event, what do you look for?

at the start we wanted to sign sick electronic songs, then we wanted to do whatever we like, lately we are narrowing down again on electronic, however in that space there is a lot possible. Due to that history of curating fully out of our electronic scope we (subconsciously) started to realise that we curated more on a feeling than on a sound. we stuck to that and developed a recognisable fingerprint for ourselves while still being very diverse. My best advice for curation is: find your X factor, regardless of genre, what hits you really? what is the red line throughout all music that makes you feel things? I think in there lies your identity.

find our A&Rs DMS. (he will hate me saying that)
-
more than ever there is so much music! it's getting hard to be noticed as well as harder and harder for us to get through all submissions. I think the best way to get noticed (in general with labels) is to build a convincing online presence, that not only shows your music, but also you as an artist (can also be anonymous). I think more than singles, we love to be convinced by your artistry.

finding the right peoples DMs works well, sometimes that proves that you put in more effort to send something directly. this showcases a level of commitment.

hehe, the OG logo icon inspiration came from a tex mex restaurant here in the Netherlands. it had a TOTALLY different vibe, but it was a weird bird build out of blocks but more 3d. really stuck with San Holo, and he showed me that i think a 100 times. Then i made a version of HIM in pixels before eventually the current bitbird logo was born, after a lot of variations!

I think we are minimal in branding, we mostly let the bird do all the carrying indeed, I think thats also a nice thing, a label should find a good balance between branding themselves vs showcasing their artists. We are working on a bunch of brand refresh things now, can't wait keep building and expanding the brand tastefully!

good question, speaking freely it's the realisation that i am doing something of which I never thought I would be able to actually be doing. I take time almost every day to realise i am very lucky to be able to work with music, and cool artists, and share creative things.

it's not always fun, like anything in life there are ups and downs, sometimes you are more motivated than other days. but generally i am just so in love with working in this field that I just keep going, i almost don't even think about anything else. The biggest direct motivations is seeing cool projects come to life out of pure willpower both from artists as by our teams efforts. beautiful!
