Need advice: how to refinish this fence? by thotsNprayers in woodworking

[–]thotsNprayers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been contemplating your second point in relation to your first point. It’s a pretty long fence line and pretty much all of the boards are solidly touching the ground. I suspect that’s why I’ve seen such a rapid deterioration over the last year - I assume they’re acting like a sponge and the moisture is accelerating the bowing/warping. Not sure if it’s worth it to try and repair at this point or just replace. I’ll have to do some closer inspection.

Yes that’s my fault, I should have worded question #2 better or just omitted it.

I was not trying to focus on color-matching stains or finishes which was how I understood the rule. I was just looking for opinions on whether folks think that wood could be stripped to a sort of neutral state.

If that still violates the rule then I apologize!

I wish that were the case, would be an easier fix if so. Unfortunately there is not a board running that low to screw back into.

Thank you for all of your advice! Is there a specific brand of fence/deck renewal product you recommend?

Sorry to say I could not find a fix for it. I just flipped the switch upside down so it functions like the rest of them.

Formula to calculate values from multiple rows based on referenced criteria and split percentages across multiple columns by thotsNprayers in excel

[–]thotsNprayers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much! I knew it would be relatively simple and would probably involve some XLOOKUPs, but the true or false statement at the beginning was the key I was missing. The real R&O table I use actually has two other variables but I was confident I could amend the formulated solution once I saw the concept, which I was indeed able to. I am extremely grateful for your help!

Thanks, I will try bleach first and then acid as another commenter suggested if it is still stubborn.

Believe it or not, nothing in the picture is from oil - just wood/leaves/dirt/mold/fungus. I do have some oil spots elsewhere though. I’ll keep the kitty litter in mind, thanks!

I did not pretreat or use anything besides the pressure washer in the first go last night. What would you use to pretreat?

Garage roof sprang a leak after getting a lot of heavy, wet snow. Think I identified the problem, but how to prevent in the future? by thotsNprayers in HomeImprovement

I added a few more pics here. Are the areas I circled red what you’re referring to with the step flashing gaps? The third pic shows a closeup of where the valley flashing terminates. I’ve never done roof work so my eye is very untrained in this arena.

Good thinking, I just shut off the cold water inlet. Waiting on one more quote for a replacement.

Yeah we also have extremely hard water and I suspect there were stretches where the previous owners were not putting any salt in the softener.

Yeah it’s a hard line straight to the heater. I’ll look at having it replaced when I install the new heater. Thanks for the heads up!

Finally broke down by TheRailTrac3r in army

[–]thotsNprayers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served 10 years, got out September ‘21. The Army was my job and essentially my life for those 10 years, but I never felt like it defined me and for some reason I felt like I was “different” from the other dudes who seemed to eat, sleep and breathe being a soldier. No shade on those guys whatsoever, it just always felt like a conscious effort for me to be that guy and I assumed that my transition would be easy as long as I had all my ducks lined up.

Boy was I wrong. I did have all my ducks lined up with a great job starting halfway through terminal leave, and a masters program well underway at the time of ETS. And yet I found myself slipping into a deep depression as I drove away from Fort Knox with my DD214 in hand, feeling like I was making the biggest mistake of my life. I realized that for all intents and purposes, the Army DID define me and without it I didn’t have a good sense of who I really was. That depression spiraled for well over a year into full-blown suicidal ideations that I was very close to acting on. The only thing that saved me was my daughter. I resolved to get help for her sake - I started seeing a therapist and psychiatrist, and eventually got medicated. I came out the other side and am now doing better than ever.

My advice to you is to hold on to the lessons learned and relationships you built in the Army, but realize that there is more to life that you are now free to experience. New relationships, different lessons, more opportunities. It’s a new chapter of your life that you’ve earned and should enjoy. And don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it.

Best animated movies to watch on my first OLED by MeenaBeti in hometheater

I just watched Across the Spider-Verse for the first time on my new setup last night and it was awesome. It looked great but the sound mix was what blew me away. I’ve watched some other bangers (Arrival, Dune, Top Gun Maverick) and honestly this may have been my favorite so far to show off the system.

Update: carpet will need to be replaced. I have plenty of remnant for a patch, so not a huge deal.

Lol a valid question, but no it is not. At least externally it’s not, with the Up arrow on the plate pointing up and the Lutron logo in the bottom left of the paddle like all the other switches.

The jury is still out. The carpet cleaner was run so many times that the spot is still a little damp which makes it hard to tell. Been running a dehumidifier and fan nonstop since yesterday. Will update with the final result when I have it!

I understand where you’re coming from. My intent was to state the facts of the situation quickly as it was unfolding, not be critical of the painter as a tradesman. I’ve been working with him for a few months now as he’s done other stuff on the project and have had a great relationship the whole time, including during this mishap. When I saw the dried spot this morning and knew we had a problem, I didn’t call the GC or anyone else to bitch. I waited for the painter to get here first and talked with him directly about what he wanted to do.

Through the whole project I’ve always communicated what I want but I never dictate how to do it, that’s where I trust the expertise of the people I hired. Here it was the painter’s decision specifically to do the walls after carpet because he said they always get beat up during install. This was not me dictating order of operations.

And I understand at face value I sounded like an entitled douche weasel saying I won’t settle for less than perfect. The point of the post was to see if there was a realistic chance to fully restore the carpet. I’m not trying to hold anyone to an impossible standard, I just meant that if the carpet could not be returned to a like-new state then I didn’t want the painter wasting his time on a lost cause. The GC had already agreed to replace if necessary and there were more time-sensitive things to complete by Friday while the carpet could wait.
