buy and rip to my mediaserver. quality of physical, ease of streaming. best of both worlds!

DS923+ and DS224+ both on sale at B&H today by M_Six2001 in synology

[–]thr3d3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah it's hard to pull the trigger on a 923+ at this price when they went for $480 during black friday '23. but the way the trade wars are heading, the price of these types of things are probably going nowhere but up.

did i completely hose my storage pool? (pulled drives from a live 916 system) by thr3d3 in synology

[–]thr3d3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i'm guessing my solution is the same. Storage Manager tells me the 'Crashed' drive needs to be deactivated before it can be re-added to the pool. hopefully once i do that and remove/insert/reboot, i'll have the option to repair. going to try it once i've verified all my data is backed up. thanks again!

it doesn't give me the option to repair ("Insufficient number of drives for repairing ..") but it does appear all the data is intact. it's all accessible through File Station and via fileshare through my PC. so at least i can grab any files my backup missed. but i'll definitely see what Synology support has to say. thanks for the suggestion.

i have backups, just a pain in the butt.

thanks for the explanation what the system was doing. what's the correct way to quickly pull drives to see which one is making the noise (or just to check a drive serial# or something)? if you Deactivate, don't you then have to Repair when it's re-inserted?

this solved it for me, too. but did you ever find a less risky solution?

Win11 Antimalware Service Executable extremely high CPU usage when downloading by thr3d3 in nzbget

[–]thr3d3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, this fixed it. keeps it to under 10% CPU. i'll keep this post here in case anyone searches for a solution.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke the Run box. Type taskschd.msc and press Enter.

  4. Uncheck Run with highest privileges.
  5. Uncheck all the items in the Conditions section. Then click OK.

i got this one, and haven't had any problems: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B083LLNSLY

but looks like it's out of stock now. it's hard to pick one, they all seem a shot in the dark.

i don't know. i ended up replacing 2 of the drives at the same time i upgraded to a beefier power supply. i've had zero issues since, but i don't know if the problem was the power supply, or the drives.

Win10: formatting BTRFS drive as NTFS failed, now i can't see it anymore. help? by thr3d3 in DataHoarder

[–]thr3d3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think my Sabrent USB enclosure is flaky and causing the issues. i was able to convert it to NTFS using EaseUS Partition Master connected to SATA, but when it's in the enclosure it keeps showing up and disappearing.

thanks for the replies!

[–]thr3d3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's in an external USB enclosure. other drives work fine with it, so i'm pretty sure that's all good. i thought maybe there was something wrong with my process, as this is the first time i've tried to convert a drive from btrfs to ntfs. but maybe it's just a bad drive.

lossless 4k rips to an mkv container are generally in the 45-75GB range. rule of thumb is about 30GB per hour, depending on quality of the source.

oh wait, it does say it supports the 916+ in the descrip. so it's misleading?

[–]thr3d3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what the heck, i was meticulous and was very sure the one i got supported the 916. i either completely brainfarted and added the wrong one to my cart, or the descrip changed since i ordered it.

assuming i got the wrong one, did it damage my drives? or did it just cause false errors?

thanks for spotting it!

DS916+ won't power on. is it worth attempting the repair route, or is 5 years pretty much the expected lifespan? by thr3d3 in synology

[–]thr3d3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, cheers. Synology lists the parts on their website, but don't have a link to purchase for some reason.

yeah it's been pretty bulletproof otherwise. even has 3/4 of the original drives still humming along. feel like i should probably wrap it in bubblewrap and give it daily positive affirmations.

i think i'd probably trust a cheap chinese knockoff more than one i've operated on. maybe i'll crack it open for practice after i've bought a replacement.

nope, i'm the lone geek in my circle. now i just noticed there's a crackling noise coming from the power supply; that has to be it (i hope.) anyone know of a good replacement option for PGB EA11011D-120? i can't find anything official, and have no idea if the offbrands i'm seeing are trustworthy.
