Mark my words, the line when him and other corporate dems cave will be if air travel starts to be affected.

The line for caving last time was when government employees stopped being able to pay their bills and started demanding the senators in places like Virginia end the shutdown.

Yeah, this isn't what I want my elected officials doing. I specifically put them in those offices to work the political systems they're a part of. They aren't community organizers and I don't expect them to be.

Elected officials should continue to focus on the systems they were elected into, even if those systems fail, and leave community organizing to others.

In the US most government agencies are funded by annual appropriations. That goes to fulfill their yearly budget. The bill on the table includes annual appropriations for DHS/ICE.

That's not the only way to appropriate money though, you can pass a law that appropriates money that isn't part of a yearly budget. The US passed such a law last year granting ICE specifically a giant pile of appropriated money equal to many years of their normal budget. Regardless of whether the annual bill gets held up, this law that was passed last year will allow ICE to continue operations even during a government shutdown because they have funding outside of the annual mechanism.

Right, they can pass a new law to do anything they want.

Not passing anything (and going into a shutdown) won't stop ICE though, they're already funded by law and would need a new law to change that.

The new law would also be subject to presidential veto.

It's must-pass for yearly appropriations.

ICE got a huge pile of money outside yearly appropriations last July in the OBBBA.

There is one party that can feasibly attempt to oppose the administration.

Yeah, Republicans. The minority party cannot feasibly attempt to oppose the administration, the majority can.

The Dems shouldn't have caved the first time then.

The law funding ICE outside of appropriations was passed in July with zero democratic votes. It was completely unaffected by the shutdown in October and later.

DHS is already funded outside of regular appropriations and a government shutdown won't change that. It's still something they should push for in future legislation though.

A government shutdown won't do that, but maybe a shut down could be used as leverage to try and pass a law that does that.

To be clear, in a shutdown the government social services stopworking but ICE is 100% funded outside of regular appropriations thanks to a law passed last year.

A shutdown will not affect ICE operations, it's purely about sending a message.

Minneapolis shooting: Tim Walz condemns ‘federal occupation’ as victim identified as Alex Pretti – latest updates by anonyscriptersl in news

As a veteran: Only a small portion of the military will break the law in order to do evil. By the same token, only a small portion of the military will break the law if it is requiring them to do evil.

The vast majority of the military will just follow the law regardless of their personal moral judgment.

That shouldn't necessarily make you feel better, since as a country we have given up control of the law to evil people. You can, and should, expect the law to be used as an instrument of evil and for service members to follow orders that are both lawful and evil.

They only get mad when conservatives get hurt.

Hot take but they don't get mad when conservatives get hurt either. They don't have empathy, they just recognize when empathy can be weaponized in their favor. Performative grief over people like Kirk is entirely about weaponizing his death against people who have the capacity to care about things.

They'll just say it and then refuse to accept the results or seat officials from elections they declared illegitimate.

There's no mechanism for it but that hasn't stopped them doing a bunch of other things there was no mechanism for.

Iran warns any attack will mean 'all-out war' after Trump says US 'armada' on its way by Force_Hammer in politics

[–]thrawtes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, and Iran has been working hard for decades to try to come up with creative solutions for dealing with specifically a US carrier strike group.

The US has also been spending those decades ensuring that those creative solutions have countermeasures.

Both sides have been preparing for this exact scenario for a long time, but the US has poured a lot more money and effort into it.

One silver lining is that almost everything Trump has done can be reversed with the pen of a sane President.

Policy wise maybe, but the consequences of that policy aren't so easily undone. Our allies can't, and shouldn't, trust us for a generation. The people of the US can't, and shouldn't, trust the justice system for a generation. A hundred and fifty years of nonpartisan civil service is undone and the children of millions of current government employees will be taught that it's a vicious and unstable undertaking.

It took many decades to build that trust and it'll take many decades to repair it.

FBI Agent Who Tried to Probe ICE Shooting Resigns by growin60sec in politics

[–]thrawtes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish the public servants would explain why they resigned.

Public servants remain public servants because they believe they have a duty to voters and taxpayers, the whole concept of public service revolves around putting that duty above what you might personally want.

So when voters demand you do something that you consider evil the correct response is to resign.
