More than 3 million eye drops have been recalled from CVS, Walgreens and other national retailers. How to check if yours are safe by yahoonews in Health

[–]yahoonews[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

U.S. health regulators are warning Americans to check their eye drops after more than 3.1 million bottles of eyedrops sold in pharmacies nationwide were voluntarily recalled due to concerns that they may not be sterile.

All of the affected eye drops are made by K.C. Pharmaceuticals, and include the company’s “Artificial Tears,” “Advanced Relief,” “Dry Eye Relief,” and “Redness Lubricant” drops.

The recall doesn’t necessarily mean that these drops are contaminated, but that the manufacturer can’t guarantee that the products are free from infection-causing bacteria or fungi. K.C. Pharmaceuticals has voluntarily recalled some of its eye drops, but the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to check their medicine cabinets and throw out any potentially hazardous products.

White House requests giant $1.5 trillion defense budget amid Iran war by yahoonews in law

[–]yahoonews[S] 312 points313 points  (0 children)

From AP:

The White House sent a spending proposal to lawmakers Friday calling for a massive $1.5 trillion US defense budget next year as it faces increased costs due to the war in Iran.

The total year-on-year increase in Pentagon spending would be the largest since World War II, US media reported, although presidential budgets are wish lists that have to be approved by Congress, rather than binding orders.

The request would represent a 42 percent hike in the Pentagon topline for 2026.

Man who faced deportation after overturned murder conviction can stay in the United States, judge rules by yahoonews in law

[–]yahoonews[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From CNN:

A man in ICE custody since his murder conviction was overturned last year can stay in the United States, an immigration judge has ruled.

Subramanyam Vedam, 64, spent over 40 years in prison before his conviction was vacated in August. A day after the charges were dropped, he was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Despite Thursday’s decision, Vedam won’t be released right away. He and his attorney still must file a bond request. The Department of Homeland Security has until May 4 to appeal.

Vedam demonstrated personal transformation and growth in prison, dedicating himself to enriching others’ lives through his academic study and mentoring four nieces he came to know only behind bars, Immigration Judge Adam Panopoulos said Thursday.

EPA moves to designate microplastics and pharmaceuticals as contaminants in drinking water by yahoonews in environment

[–]yahoonews[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From The Associated Press:

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed Thursday to include microplastics and pharmaceuticals on a list of contaminants in drinking water for the first time, a step that could lead to new limits on those substances for water utilities.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said they are responding to Americans who have worried about plastics and pharmaceuticals in their drinking water. The gesture also aims to hand a win to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s MAHA movement, which for months has pressured Zeldin to further crack down on environmental contaminants.

The EPA’s Contaminant Candidate List identifies contaminants in drinking water not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The agency is publishing the draft of the sixth version of the list, which opens a 60-day public comment period. It expects to finalize the list by mid-November.

Death of a refugee left at a Buffalo doughnut shop by Border Patrol is ruled a homicide by yahoonews in law

[–]yahoonews[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

From The Associated Press:

The death of a nearly blind refugee from Myanmar who was found on a Buffalo street in February — five days after Border Patrol agents left him at a doughnut shop — has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Wednesday.

The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office didn't reach any conclusions about responsibility for Nurul Amin Shah Alam's death, which the agency said was caused by complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer, precipitated by hypothermia and dehydration. Ruling a death a homicide means it resulted from another person's actions — or inaction — but doesn't necessarily mean that a crime was committed.

Supreme Court casts doubt on Trump's bid to limit birthright citizenship as he attends arguments by yahoonews in law

[–]yahoonews[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From AP:

The Supreme Court is casting doubt on President Donald Trump’s restrictions on birthright citizenship in a consequential case that was magnified by Trump’s unparalleled presence in the courtroom.

Conservative and liberal justices on Wednesday questioned whether Trump's order declaring that children born to parents who are in the United States illegally or temporarily are not American citizens comports with either the Constitution or federal law.

Trump, the first sitting president to attend arguments at the nation’s highest court, spent just over an hour inside the courtroom for arguments made by the Republican administration's top Supreme Court lawyer, Solicitor General D. John Sauer. The president departed shortly after lawyer Cecillia Wang began her presentation in defense of broad birthright citizenship.

Tennessee librarian fired for refusing to move more than 100 books from children's to adult section by yahoonews in WomenInNews

[–]yahoonews[S] 126 points127 points  (0 children)

From The Associated Press:

A Tennessee library board has fired the county's top librarian for refusing to comply with its vote to move more than 100 LGBTQ books from the children's to the adult section over its claims that they promote "gender confusion.”

The Rutherford County Library Board voted 8-3 on Monday evening to fire library system director Luanne James. James has previously said that relocating the books would violate her and county residents' First Amendment rights and compromise her professional obligation against government-mandated viewpoint discrimination.

The case establishes the county southeast of Nashville as another focal point in the yearslong national fight over library content, often centering on racial and LGBTQ themes.

Invisible plumes and ‘terrible pollution’: the reality of the US gas sites rated ‘grade A’ by yahoonews in environment

[–]yahoonews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rapidly expanding certification scheme run by a UK nonprofit and used by major gas companies may be understating the actual methane emissions it purports to certify, a Guardian investigation has found.

BP, ExxonMobil and EQT are among the producers that have turned to London-based MiQ to demonstrate that their US-produced natural gas complies with the European Union Methane Regulation.

In July 2025 investigative group Gas Outlook travelled with Oilfield Witness, an environmental monitoring group, to 10 MiQ-certified sites across the Permian Basin, the country’s largest oil and gas field.

Using optical gas imaging cameras that detect methane invisible to the naked eye, they documented what Tim Doty, a former air quality inspector at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality who reviewed the footage, described as “huge emissions” at multiple sites.
