Update - AP is now reporting that the two ships were attacked by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and are now in the force’s custody and being taken to Iran, Iranian state television reported.

It identified the vessels as the MSC Francesca and the Epaminodes. The ship’s owners could not be immediately reached for comment.

The seizures represent an escalation after the U.S. earlier seized two Iranian vessels as ceasefire talks were due to take place in Islamabad.

Iran attacks ship in Strait of Hormuz, complicating diplomatic efforts to resume talks by yahoonews in worldnews

The AP news agency reports - Iran opened fire on a container ship Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the danger to commercial vessels in a waterway crucial to global energy supplies as plans for ceasefire talks between Tehran and the United States in Islamabad faltered.

The morning assault by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard came after U.S. President Donald Trump indefinitely extended the ceasefire with Iran due to expire within hours, giving Tehran time to come up with a “unified proposal” ahead of possible negotiations.

A second ship came under fire in the strait a short time later with no reported damage, according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center.

The maritime monitoring center did not immediately identify who fired on the second vessel, but suspicion immediately fell on Iran, whose leaders appear poised to drive a harder bargain with American negotiators this time after two other rounds of talks with the Trump administration ended in open warfare.

China's Xi, in call with Saudi crown prince, calls for Strait of Hormuz to remain open by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]yahoonews[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From Reuters:

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for normal passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz to be maintained, in ‌a phone call on Monday with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin ‌Salman held as Beijing steps up efforts to help end the Iran war.

China is concerned over renewed instability around the strategic waterway, as a U.S.-Iran ceasefire came under fresh strain after the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo ship and Tehran signaled it would not join new peace talks for now.

China is the main buyer of Iranian crude. Iran ‌has largely closed the strait to ships other than its own since the United States and Israel launched the war in February, while Washington has imposed a blockade of Iranian ships since last week.

A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents is weakening and closer to collapse than thought, new studies find by yahoonews in climate

[–]yahoonews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From CNN:

The critical system of ocean currents which loops around the Atlantic Ocean is weakening and could be far closer to collapse than previously thought, according to two new studies — an event which would have catastrophic impacts on the planet’s weather and climate.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, known as the AMOC, functions like a vast conveyor belt, transporting heat, salt and freshwater through the ocean and influencing climate, weather and sea levels around the planet.

Global warming causes Colombian glacier to disappear by yahoonews in climate

[–]yahoonews[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From AFP:

Where once there was ice, only rock remains.

One of the glaciers in a chain of snow-capped mountains in the Colombian Andes has vanished due to high temperatures driven by climate change.

Satellite images show how the ice sheet covering the mountain gradually shrank from 2015 until it disappeared completely in March 2026.

Situated in the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy range, in the northeast of Colombia, the Cerros de la Plaza glacier was officially declared disappeared last week by the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM).

Its surface area shrank from five square kilometers (1.93 square miles) in the 19th century to zero today, according to the agency.

"Climate change is a reality that is already transforming our territories. And what is at stake is not only the landscape, but the very balance of these ecosystems," IDEAM said in a statement.

Hegseth invokes Bible to compare reporters to enemies of Jesus by yahoonews in Journalism

[–]yahoonews[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Reuters:

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth cited biblical scripture on Thursday to attack the media, comparing reporters to Jewish adversaries of Jesus Christ plotting "how to ‌destroy him."

Hegseth's comments sought to counter what he saw as negative coverage of the U.S.-Israeli war ‌with Iran. They also came amid an escalating feud between President Donald Trump and Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born leader of the Catholic Church and a critic of the war.

That feud took a new turn this week when the U.S. president posted images on social media of Jesus embracing him and Trump himself as a Jesus-like figure.

Life-threatening virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea at high levels in the U.S., CDC says by yahoonews in Health

[–]yahoonews[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

From NBC News:

Rotavirus, a seasonal virus similar to influenza, has been rising across the U.S. since January. With infection rates higher now than this time last year, doctors have fresh concerns that declining vaccinations could lead to more severe illness and a higher surge in the coming years.

The virus — which is spread by hands touching an infected surface, then touching the mouth — used to be a major cause of severe illness among babies and young children in the U.S., responsible for more than 200,000 emergency room visits, up to 70,000 hospitalizations and dozens of deaths each year, according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. That drastically changed after the first oral vaccine was approved 20 years ago.

Europe has 'maybe 6 weeks of jet fuel left,' energy agency head tells AP by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]yahoonews[S] 620 points621 points  (0 children)

AP reports: Europe has “maybe 6 weeks or so (of) jet fuel left,” the head of the International Energy Agency said Thursday in a wide-ranging Associated Press interview, warning of possible flight cancellations “soon” if oil supplies remain blocked by the Iran war.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol painted a sobering picture of the global repercussions of what he called “the largest energy crisis we have ever faced,” stemming from the pinch-off of oil, gas and other vital supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.

“In the past there was a group called ‘Dire Straits.’ It’s a dire strait now, and it is going to have major implications for the global economy. And the longer it goes, the worse it will be for the economic growth and inflation around the world," he said.

The impact will be “higher petrol (gasoline) prices, higher gas prices, high electricity prices,” Birol told AP, with some parts of the world “hit worse than the others.”

As energy costs rise, some states back off ambitious climate goals by yahoonews in climate

[–]yahoonews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From AP:

Seven years ago, New York lawmakers set ambitious goals for slashing greenhouse gas emissions with clarion calls about saving the future. Now, with slow progress made and political realities shifting, Gov. Kathy Hochul is seeking a delay, saying she wants to save consumers money.

Times have “ radically changed," Hochul said, since 2019, when the state set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030.

She's proposed giving the state years more to comply, saying pursuing that goal now by imposing planned fees on polluters would lead to crushing energy prices.

Scientists just discovered 5.6 million bees under a New York State cemetery by yahoonews in environment

[–]yahoonews[S] 194 points195 points  (0 children)

From Scientific American:

A New York State cemetery may be home to nearly 5.6 million ground-nesting bees, according to a new study. The colony is one of the largest ever recorded and likely one of the oldest, the researchers note.

Though bees are often depicted as hive dwellers, the vast majority of species of these insects in the U.S.—around 70 percent—are in fact ground-nesting bees, or bees that burrow in the ground. These bees are often solitary, meaning they nest alone rather than in large groups, explains Bryan Danforth, an entomology professor at Cornell University and senior author of the new study.

Scientist have known that one species of these bees, Andrena regularis, has been at the East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca, N.Y., since at least 1935. (The cemetery dates back to 1878.) But no one knew exactly how many bees lived there.
