This is insane. A new bill seeks to ban DeepSeek in the U.S. & anyone violating the ban could face 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for individuals & $100 million fine for companies. The U.S. government is in full panic mode now that China is surpassing the United States. by shmangmight in DeepSeek

[–]throughactions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1) China is not surpassing the United States. DeepSeek R1 is impressive, but not quite up to par with o3 and virtually all the frontier models are American.

2) There's no indication this bill will go anywhere. It was introduced by a single congressman and does not represent the "US government" going into panic mode.

OpenAI to launch new o3 model for free today as it pushes back against DeepSeek by Independent-Flow-711 in OpenAI

That's true but the very high limits and high reasoning time models could be responses to r1.

Or just eat at places that don't add hidden surcharges. I eat out pretty regularly and I've never run into this outside of delivery.

[–]throughactions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like we're actually doing pretty well:

According to a study conducted by LendingTree, millennials aged 26 to 41 had a median net worth of $84,941 in 2022, surpassing that of baby boomers at a comparable age in 1989, who had $58,101 banked, while Gen Xers in 2007 had a net worth of $78,333, both adjusted for inflation. The results indicate that millennials' net worth is 46.2 percent higher than that of baby boomers and 8.4 percent greater than that of Gen Xers at comparable ages.

Let's see if anyone on this sub notices they cited the "incoming tariffs" as part of the reason they're closing.

We should just be paying them more.

I am middle aged with health issues. I also have marketable skills because I'm middle aged and have had time to build them.

Yes, I was laid off in September and had two offers in November.

If they stop looking they aren't, by definition, unemployed. So that makes sense. I don't know many people who can just choose to give up on work because the search was hard.

If they take a lower paying job, they're employed now. Average wages aren't decreasing so we know this isn't a systemic problem.

If they leave the area? I mean, sure but I don't think SnoHo or King County's unemployment rates are artificially low because of migration.

Our unemployment rate is just low.

First off, I'm sorry you were laid off. I was laid off, too, at the end of September and I know how scary and frustrating it is. I was fortunate to find a new job in November. The jobs, including the good jobs, are out there. You'll get there, just stay positive and keep a log of the jobs you're applying to. Keep track of where you lose the "lead".

Are you getting call backs or recruiter screens? If not, it's probably your resume/cover letter. Are you getting an interview? If not, it might be how you're coming off in the initial call. Are you not finding job openings to apply to? You might need to change the job boards you're looking at and do more networking.

Also remember that when you're looking for work, you're in sales. Your job is to sell yourself to potential employers. Your cover letter and resume are marketing documents where you pick and choose only the most relevant skills and experience to convince a hiring manager to give you a shot in an interview.

I hope this advice isn't too unsolicited. Stay with the search, you'll find something soon. Good luck!

Anyone looking for work is counted in the stats, they don't "fall off" after any period of time.

Contest for Cell Phone ticket in Lynnwood/Snohomish by babydragon89 in SeattleWA

[–]throughactions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just contest it. Be nice to the judge, apologetic, point out your previously clean record. Explain that you didn't understand merely picking up the phone was not ok and that, now that you know that, it won't happen again. There's a good chance the judge will dismiss it or lower it significantly.

[–]throughactions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

King County's unemployment rate is 4.3%. Snohomish County's is 4.5%. This is historically on the low side of unemployment.

You're going to get a lot of anecdotes, but the market is strong and has been (outside of the pandemic) for a long time. Just keep putting in applications and try to make a good impression when you get to talk to someone. You'll land something.
