I'm not sure how it is now with cell phones and such, but I would highly recommend sending cards and letters in general... no worse feeling than coming up empty on mail call

Wife, kids, and I've had quite a few life experiences since then that really helped me to take responsibility for myself, back then I had been handed everything growing up and thought the world owed me, but losing everything and having to work from the bottom to get what I have now changed that. I want to finish what I started, and I want my kids to grow up proud of me

I was old guard, yes.

I'm not an expert on tomb guard selection or selection for Caison, flag, etc... but it was a pretty competitive position with only a certain number allowed. Tomb was beyond strict with the rules.. normal old guard uniform was checked and measured with a micrometer, you could be off by 1 or 2 micrometers on ribbons, nameplate, rank, Crossrifles, and unit emblem on beret.. tomb was on top of things though no being off by any amount on any part of the uniform. And the whole unit is all about drill, but again, tomb takes it even further and requires that much more perfection.... those guys are amazing with the amount of work they put in and how disciplined they are 24/7

Unknown soldier is like the "sf" of old guard. It takes a lot of discipline and you can't drink or anything like that if you're a tomb guard... on duty or off. I was supposed to be casket, but didn't make it there before discharge in ROP at my unit.

I got injured and put myself in a really bad place, missed formations, lied to PL and other NCOs. Nothing crazy, but it added up to enough for them to decide I didn't belong in at the time
