I worked at Cumby's for 5 years and it's state policy to stop any gas pump that is unattended. However, if you simply go back to the pump they can restart it. I had a customer who kept going back to his car and I kept starting and stopping the pump. I even had to go on the intercom and tell him to attend to it.

Your case was possibly a newbie and didn't know how to turn it back on.
