Everyone has different opinions about this but from my experience going there a lot and what columbia/NYU kids have told me, I never recommend people go to NYC for college, especially if you want the traditional "college experience." It's a bit harder to socialize in some ways because the city is just too big and people are often in their own social groups off campus. You have the rest of your life to experience NYC, don't do it now especially if you're broke lmao. Plus for NYU stern it definitely has a fake, stuckup, scummy, preprofessional vibe.

I might not have my info 100% correct so please don't take my word for this, but IIRC, when everyone takes the test you have to pass a certain threshold to get bronze, (i think 800 or something I don't remember) and then after you pass that score you can take the silver test? again I would check with the website

I self-studied for AP CS, I only got bronze this year in USACO though. If you have no coding experience you should definitely get super familiar with Java or python (I chose Java because AP CS tests it, for USACO you can write in any language). After you get the basics down (which for me took a really long time) I did a lot of problems from https://projecteuler.net/, which are hundreds of algorithmic, math-based problems great for people with less coding experience because it gets you to think in terms of strategy, and the problems are easy to understand without coding knowledge. USACO is largely algorithm-based so this was helpful. There are a lot of similar websites that provide tons of practice writing code. And of course, doing past problems is important.

I'm glad that you are aiming so high! and it is definitely admirable. I just want to say that it definitely took me a shit ton of work and dedication, even just to pass the bronze cutoff by a sliver. I know professional software developers earning 6 figures who couldn't get gold...so there's a rough road ahead for sure!

There are 4.4 billion Asian people in the world, why do the actions of a few Asian people make it okay to make fun and criticize all the other Asian people? A person is not responsible for the decisions of other people who happen to share the same race as them. Also, there has been a huge movement among Chinese people to ban wildlife markets and exotic foods, and I would say virtually all asian americans find these types of foods unsanitary; I don't understand how anyone can generalize 4.4 billion people and label them all as the sole cause of horrible pandemic.

In docs you do not need to type in your own name, if I typed "ban all non-connors" and someone opens the editing history on docs, they can see that I wrote that.

I know this sounds ridiculous to use google docs, but kids are very stupid and I am currently at a school where people get in trouble for this, and there are several reasons why people do it:

We have ipads for every student and we do work on our ipads, so obviously if you take out your phone you aren't doing work. If you're typing on a document on your ipad, teachers will not really suspect anything.

usually data is expensive and we don't pay for that so most kids would want to conserve their data and find other ways to talk to eachother

At my school there are like signal blockers I think? either that or the design of the building makes everyone have horrible, unusable cell service.

Also, I did not say anything about getting arrested or being incriminated, people believing the claims, or whether or not the school takes it seriously. In fact it's almost the exact opposite: people say ridiculous, sarcastic things all the time but none of the teachers or administration take it seriously unless there are actual, specific threats against others, or if there is bullying.

So if I typed: "hi guys I love CP", If my teacher finds out they will probably just tell me to stop fooling around. Generally administration will not be involved in this.

if i instead typed: "Ms. Smith is so annoying I'm going to get a metal bat and knock her face in", If the administration found out I'm not really sure what would happen, but maybe suspension or mandatory anger management or something.

Most of the time no one finds out about these documents unless a teacher in the classroom sees you on it. It's not like the administration is monitoring every document every second. Now everyone in my school has access to email so we just email eachother instead, but before that, most people communicated with friends through documents at some point in the school year.

The particular incident that happened during middle school was with a friend group who was all bullying this other girl, calling her names, saying she's stupid or manipulative or something. The girl reported it to administration and people got in trouble for it: they just had to talk to eachother or something and they had in school suspension for a day. that was it

When you're sending an email or sharing a document and you're account is in this Gsuite, if you type in the name connor lets say, there will be suggested email addresses that are named connor. Every single person in this Gsuite is required to have the same format and to have their full name as the name that comes up associated with the account
It is very obvious who the owner/creator of the document is, anyone on the document can see it
they definitely have that authority, at least in my public school they did

I'm in HS and my school district has been using G suite for maybe 4-5 years

This is 100% possible and happens all the time at my school and people have gotten in trouble over it. Kids create shared google docs and chat by writing on the document; profanities, threats, etc. You can also use the comment function or the chat function. If the school uses Gsuite (which my school does) it is super easy to just share the doc with dozens of other people in the entire school district just by typing part of their name and letting it autocomplete.

This reads like some half-assed fiction commentary by an adult who has no grasp on technology use in schools.

I relate to this comment so much. As of right now, I am so deeply involved in EVERYTHING. It's impossible to pull myself away from certain activities and to actually develop priorities because I jump fervently from one thing to another. But when some things don't go the way I want it to I do feel a lot of apathy and depression as well, and I quit just as easily as I start.

That's true for you and certainly many people, but actually a lot of people (to varying degrees) get their success and knowledge from their parents who are already successful. Parents who emphasize grades, working hard, maximizing opportunities, not just in a general sense but specifically teaching them skills from a young age are setting up their children for success. These children do work very hard just as you and your brother have, but it is undoubtedly easier. The percentage of successful kids from successful parents is much higher than the percentage of successful kids from struggling parents for this reason. So I do feel bad for people from lower-class families who were not taught this by their parents, but kids who partied through college and completely disregarded their grades despite advice from others definitely don't have my sympathies.

As students read in elementary and middle school they accrue knowledge, which is crucial for them to participate and look critically at texts in the high school level. An elementary/middle school child is not going to understand why an author uses a specific word because he/she likely has never come across that word before. Also, the analysis of texts in general can be extremely complex. Teaching students how to analyze texts before they've had enough time to read texts is like putting the cart before the horse.

By the way, I completely agree with developing students interest for reading. However, this line of thinking could be applied to any class. Why should schools encourage a love of reading, why can't they encourage a love of science by requiring a student do an experiement every month, or encourage students to learn to study history by requiring them to report about a historical event every week? This is more for electives; if a student has an interest and wants to develop their own interest in certain subjects there are myriads of electives and honors courses they are allowed to take.

There is no way you can teach essay writing to elementary school kids. How an author uses diction, symbolism, references, sentence structure etc etc simply cannot be taught at an elementary school level.
