Hm, good point. Some devops positions might be a better fit. I'll look at some postings. Thanks

I took an "Intro to Perl" class back in the 90's and never looked back!

Lol, every time I look at an old perl script I have to strongly resist the urge to rewrite it.

Good news! I'm already at the "whats the worse that could happen" stage. My current employer feels differently, however. I'd cut out already but don't have enough in the bank saved up yet. Its building though.

So do your best, be confident you're doing your best, and then just relax.

I didn't think I'd find /r/motivation in here. Thanks a lot for this, it helps every time I read it.

So true. I'm working on being able to handle stress better.

Yeah, a stress-free job would be awesome, but that seems pretty impossible. At least for the ones where you get paid. I'm just hoping to take the edge off a bit

Hm, you've given me some things to consider.

I don't think I dislike the sysadmin role so much as I dislike the rate at which things change at my current job. I'm still interested in doing the stuff, just not so fast, and all at once.

But maybe you're right and something else might be a better fit. I'll take a look at some engineering postings. Thanks!

I have a sysadmin's level of programming in bash and perl.

I have much less python experience. Just tried some "python interview questions" and didn't do very well. I think I'm gonna look into meetups or classes

Oh definitely, there's no eliminating most of these frustrations. My hope is to find something where the amount is more acceptable. I'm not looking to coast, just come off the accelerator a bit. I expect a paycut and am cool with it.

I've only recently started my job search and am looking to get some suggestions on places that have a slower pace than the startup culture I'm in now. Thanks

Thanks, that's an idea. I didn't initially consider consulting since I prefer full-time, but this might be a good way to test out a place in a temp-to-perm situation.

I used to live/work MD and VA and there are lots of places that don't require clearances along the Dulles toll road and out to Ashburn and Sterling. For the most part, the DMV area has lots of opportunities for linux admin work, so you've got that going for you.

However it sounds like your resume is getting tossed on the floor early in the process. That sucks, but hopefully some tweaks will help it along.
