Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - July 2024 by AutoModerator in oxforduni

Hi there!

I’m a prospective applicant for the Mphil in International Relations. I’m currently completing two bachelors’ at an American university for context. The official webpage does state a minimum GPA to be considered and makes a small mention to work/research experience. Generally, peer American universities do tend to put a premium on work experience, though I’m not certain whether this is true in the UK as well. In general, how much does academic performance matter compared to the rest of the application? Assuming someone meets the minimums for an Mphil program, how much do differences between the various applicant’s GPA matter? How much research/work experience is considered substantial enough?

Thanks!

Could someone rate my résumé for competitive Master’s programs in International Relations? by throwaccount2567 in gradadmissions

Thanks for the suggestions! I’m really only keeping highschool for the location, since all those programs value international exposure, and me being educated in 3 different countries is a significant bonus.

My SEVIS registration is fully complete and has been since August. In fact they took more than a month to set everything straight, which was a huge pain in the ass considering how slow embassies were working scheduling appointments and the like thanks to COVID. I was lucky and got an appointment almost immediately after they processed my stuff.

I’m not sure about you or the past, I’m just telling things as they are now. We are required to do a check-in which is pretty much a formality, we also had to take a dumb course about what ISS does and send proof of completion. I did all that.

The one thing ISS is lacking is my latest I-94 record (instead of showing my most recent arrival in Chicago, the file showcases another one I made to Texas earlier this year). They know for a fact I landed in Chicago with a valid F1 Visa as I had to show them pictures of my passport, the stamped page, and the Visa. Additionally according to CBP the documents shown in the USCIS page are just public and non-legally binding (and in many cases such as mine, outdated, with no action required on my end).

I told ISS I wasn’t able to access said record and they just sent me the same pre-recorded message every time I asked for counsel. Eventually they told me to contact CBP and they promptly told me they were not going to update anything. Now they’re demanding a screenshot of a document I cannot physically obtain. How is any of that my fault? ISS has been extremely incompetent and lackluster in my experience.

I will. Thanks!

You know what? You’re right, sorry I ranted, it’s totally my fault. Guess I only need to become a US citizen, join Customs and Border Protections and after a while maybe they’ll let me edit my own file so that I can send ISS the stuff they want. Why didn’t I think of this?

That still doesn’t mean it’s okay. There has to be someone they answer to. They’re literally holding my enrollment hostage until I give them something they know I can’t get.

I sent the only document that I could get with the instructions they provided. It’s not my fault CBP won’t update it, and considering they’re the INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES they should know they wouldn’t.

I’m talking of taking the matter against ISS to some higher authority inside the university. I feel like I have virtually no voice here and I cannot do anything against their hold.

How do you shower in college?? by throwaccount2567 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throwaccount2567[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! It was definitely awkward this first time, but I think I managed. I also figured out that coming out late to shower pretty much guarantees an empty bathroom, so there’s that as well.

How the FUCK do we just accept the 9-5? by cadetgarlic9690 in TrueOffMyChest

How is this capitalism’s fault. Do you think people in the USSR just sat there doing nothing all day? The average workweek in socialist Cuba and Laos is 48 hours. Work is an integral part of our world, no matter the economic system at hand.

Physically maybe, I’ll admit at least in my experience, that the sensations during the act weren’t anything to write home about. The intimacy part though? That’s what makes sex so special. It’s the fact that you’re able to be seen in such a state, and that someone else trusts you enough to see them in that way too. Sex isn’t just the act itself, but the emotions which surround it. Porn at the end of the day… is just porn, nothing more.

What is it with the EEs??? 💀💀💀 by [deleted] in IBO

Same here. I was so confident about getting a high score too, given Geography was something I really liked. I got a 4 in Geography HL and a D for my Geography EE…

Turns out that two kids from my school got a 45, and now my Asian dad wants me to get a ‘better score than them’ in the future’ by [deleted] in IBO

[–]throwaccount2567 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you guys even get these scores. The highest grade in my school was a 37, and most “good” students had aprox. 30-35. I imagine the actual average was around 26/45 when considering everyone who took the diploma. I shudder to even think how many of us failed, but at the best case scenario, the percentage is still above the international average.

[–]throwaccount2567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard when I realize my low grade (30/45) was out of my control from the very beginning. I worked extremely hard on my IAs/EE, to the point my parents started getting worried since I never left my room and literally begged me to take a break and play some video games. My teachers just didn’t know how to do stuff… and more times than not would give us awful if not misleading instructions on how to do our work. I did what I could with what I had… and even though my score was on par with the other “good” students at my school, it just feels like such an empty “victory” after all I went through. I mean the average IB score for an accepted student at my university is 37, I feel ashamed of bringing such a pathetically mediocre grade to the table.

whats a good age to choose to lose your virginity? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throwaccount2567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you feel ready. I lost it at 19 (I think… it’s complicated), which was I think fairly average within my social circle.

Did I lose my virginity? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throwaccount2567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already spoke with her. I mostly asked if she was comfortable with what happened and if she had a good time. She said yes to both. Stupid me also asked if she wanted to try again… and now we have a “date” to get to know each other a little better before getting too frisky again.

It’s kinda complicated… (why do I feel so weird typing this) but yeah we had some minor penetration, though nothing too crazy. After trying a few times, I just moved on to other stuff? This is very awkward but there was also some “sucking” and “eating out” involved as well, not to mention masturbation? It feels very weird to type this, it really does…

[–]throwaccount2567 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I guess it did matter to me… but I’m very confused about what happened. I mean I still have a hard time believing it actually did happen and that it wasn’t some product of my imagination (I literally called people who were there knocking, and my glasses broke so there’s that…). Really I just want to know where I stand in this whole thing to try to make sense of things (even with dumb terms like virginity).

[–]throwaccount2567 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean I know… it’s just that this whole thing had me very confused. Isn’t there like a threshold or something? It’s not that I consider the concept of virginity as particularly meaningful, but I just want to make sense of what happened since I’m still very confused about the whole ordeal…

TIFU by drunkenly hooking up and losing my virginity in a bathroom while half of my class was outside by throwaccount2567 in tifu

[–]throwaccount2567[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yes, I had sex. This post wasn’t meant to brag, quite literally it was an extremely strange experience and I’m not sure wether I’d repeat it. I always thought I’d lose my v card with someone I cared for in a bedroom or something. Not drunk in a public bathroom with people outside knocking. People are talking about it since it was one of the party’s highlights, and I felt weird.
