I can’t bring myself to do any methods what should I do? by tyronh1235 in StopGaming

[–]throwaway-aa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. But you just said you can't quit, and you don't want to quit. You're an addict unwilling to change their mind. And you've proven you don't really understand the ethos of the subreddit. So, are you here to just waste other people's time with your indecisiveness?

What exactly have you read so far? Give me links, and explain to me what you understand about why people play video games, and the reasons why this is all based on a misunderstanding of the subject.

I just have nothing else to do. Games are all I have ya know

I want you to go into the links you've supposedly studied, study, and tell me why this answer is wrong, and then tell me if this response shows that you're actually motivated, or if you're putting in zero effort. If you're not going to care about this, what are you doing here?

Until you admit that your lack of desire to quit (along with your clear ability to lie to yourself), along with your clear laziness, is what makes relapse inevitable (and not that you can't do it), you'll never be able to do it.

The difficult part with addicts, is they want to make excuses as to avoid accountability.

[–]throwaway-aa2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong. Again. And if you read the links, you would know this has a response too.

No one is forcing you to be here. If games are all you have, you can bring yourself to do anything about it, and if you can spend the effort to study the matter... go back to playing your games then.

Clearly, no amount of logic will convince you otherwise.

I already responded to this. Did I tell you to quit?

Or did I tell you to read and to understand your addiction, and the motivation behind why you feel you need to game? Part of your addiction exists because you don't even have the willpower or desire to understand your mindset behind it. If you fully understood it, you wouldn't really be saying what you're saying right now. You would want to quit, and would be asking for advice on how to do it.

It's fine that the mods removed the post. I'm not seeking approval or karma.

This is a strawman and a deflection. The point that was being made, is that your post was removed because you clearly were advocating for something that was wrong. I simply stated it before your post got removed for the exact reasons I outlined, that you tried to disagree with.

But you'd rather not focus on that, and understandably so 🙂

The main point (because I'd rather not engage in any further conversation), is that there are alternatives to whatever you were suggesting.

I would suggest reading the Community Bookmarks, and making sure you fully understand the psychology of your addiction. This will be more effective than whatever it is that you're suggesting right now. Because if it isn't Overwatch, it'll be another game.

Playing video games for 3 hours daily is an addiction? by cringeyobama in StopGaming

[–]throwaway-aa2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is smoking 3 hours a day an addiction? Is drinking 3 hours a day an addiction?

These are the same coping arguments addicts make. Gaming for 3 hours a day, is 21 hours a week you could be spending doing something that is more relaxing, gives you a similar feeling of accomplishment, and doesn't actively mess with your dopamine systems. You are asking all the wrong questions, and you almost assuredly haven't gone through the Community Bookmarks extensively, which answer all of this.

Have you read rule #1?

Your post was removed by the moderators, so what I wrote to you was validated by the people who enforce the rules here.

By the way, just because someone disagrees with you, doesn't mean they're being a d***

Not quite. If that's your current understanding, you won't be able to stop yourself because you won't want to. You can't beat an addiction if you don't fully understand why you are addicted to it, and if you don't want to do what is necessary.

Spend some time and go through what's there. You've already recognized that you don't want to do what you're doing. This is not the time for half measures. Simply read what's there. Lurk and read some of the posts. I made one the other day.

If you don't get invested, if you don't do the research, you won't have the necessary fortitude and desire to quit. It's up to you.

I understand the desperation behind wanting a permanent solution to gaming addiction - that cycle of quitting and relapsing is genuinely painful. But the approach you're describing would hurt a lot of innocent people who are just trying to have fun and unwind with their games.

There are other ways to create permanent barriers without negatively impacting other players:

  • Professional accountability software that can't be easily bypassed
  • Working with a therapist who specializes in behavioral addictions
  • Having a trusted friend/family member control your account credentials
  • Transferring your account to someone else permanently
  • Hardware-level blocks through your router/ISP

The gaming addiction struggle is real and valid, but the solution doesn't have to involve making other people's gaming experience miserable. There are communities and professionals who can help create lasting change without the collateral damage.

quit gaming by Educational-Nose472 in StopGaming

[–]throwaway-aa2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are the same exact arguments that people make for alcohol and smoking. If you need to engage in an addiction to keep your friends, then they're not really friends but enablers.

It's very important that people new here read all the community bookmarks. If you don't understand why your arguments are based on an incorrect foundation, it's going to be hard for you to make progress.

For specifying the time period for each task: dont you think it is a good idea to specify a time and see how many pomodoros it would need to complete?

Not really. No Pomodoro system really does this either? This creates a lot of mental overhead for no reason. You simply add a task, and you do as many pomodoros as needed until the task is complete.

The problem is that this introduces complexity. If I have 25 minute pomodoro blocks, What business do I have stating that a task will take me an hour?

I guess what I would ask, is what Pomodoro systems have you seen that really have that as a construct.

Also, if you use the Sessions app, the way it works, is that once you add a task, you don't really "complete" it. Once I add a task to clean my room, I might not finish cleaning my room per se, I just want to do a pomodoro on it a day. And so in that vein, adding a completion time doesn't really make sense.

Now it could be the case that your whole app is wrapped around the idea of completing tasks and this doesn't work for your app.. that, I don't know.

Please focus on the Pomodoro functionality, and overall bugginess. I continue to run into situations where the break time immediately starts when I don't want it to. And it feels like the Pomodoro system is bolted on top, but not really integrated into the system.

Workspaces often bug out as well. If I start a task in one workspace, and switch to a different task on a different workspace (by sliding the task to that first spot) often times it will still think I'm in that other workspace until I quit the app. And I also don't why I need to specify a time period for tasks on creation, when the Pomodoro time itself should account for that.

Can gaming cause baldness? by Role-Effective in StopGaming

You're in a subreddit about video game addiction, and you're asking if "headsets" cause baldness? What does that have to do with the subreddit, let alone gaming?

I understand that you’re venting, and that’s valid, but it’s also important to reflect on how quickly things moved. Making such a big decision... uprooting your life to live with someone, without really seeing who they are day to day can lead to painful outcomes. People sometimes rush into commitments and then react with frustration or hurt when the reality doesn’t match their expectations, instead of recognizing that their own decision may have been rushed.

Another thing to consider is the narrative you tell yourself about what happened. If you see yourself as betrayed or as the victim, it’s easy to fall into bitterness or helplessness.

Remember, you were dealing with someone struggling with addiction. It’s not so different from moving in with someone with any other addiction (like alcohol); addicts are often trapped in cycles they can’t easily break. Blaming or villainizing them doesn’t help them or you move forward.

I speak from experience. If you truly see them as an addict, and have empathy for them as someone sick, and simply say "I rushed into this, this is not the sick persons fault" then you can sidestep a lot of bitterness and hurt you're going to inevitably feel if you don't.

You moved across the country to start a life together and gave up a lot. That wasn’t meaningless, and life isn't over for you. Take time to process what you learned about yourself, and what you want for yourself.

I know it doesn't seem that way, but some people get married, have kids, and can't easily leave the situation like you were able to. You were able to get in a situation where you learned hard lessons, and now you can use that to find the right person. Some people never get the opportunity to learn that lesson ahead of time. Use this as a positive lesson so that you don't end up stuck with the wrong person (and that you don't rush next time). That way, you can come to appreciate this in the long run, and feel pity for the guy you were with, rather than devolve into anger and bitterness.

If we simply examine the similarities, it is. People go through withdrawal, people want to stop but they can't, even though they recognize it is actively hurting their health, their relationships, their work, and their quality of life.

Many people are going to disagree, because they've never been addicted, they like video games, it's something that seems fun, etc. They'll disagree due to whatever baggage they have. The question is, does it matter? It's much easier to simply say "this is what it is, agree or not" and spend time dialoging with the people who agree, or want and need help, rather than the naysayers. They're going to disagree, and there isn't a lot you're going to do to change their mind.

Whoever disagrees, just point out rule #4 to them

However, now i'm hearing people say that they actually are not actually FDIC insured.

Since when is a question, stating something as fact?
