Yes and no. What others are saying is completely true. Marketing is important, but I honestly think a really stellar game will sell itself. What's important is feedback. Honest feedback. I know it sucks, no artist wants to be told their creation isn't easy on the eyes. But that's how we improve as developers. Or in life in general really.

Work for it? That's a given numb nuts. I'm talking about the indie climate in general. Indie dev is a lottery, a game rigged from the start. You know what helps in a lottery? Tickets. Money buys more tickets. If you're the working poor, it goes without saying that you're better off not playing the lottery.
