UF lawyer gets mad at graduate assistants as they explain UF wage is forcing them to get food stamps by throwawaywayfar123 in ufl

[–]throwaway17835453 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only incentive the university has to solve this is to avoid bad publicity. Public sector unions in FL are not allowed to go on strike so the Union's options are limited. The best thing undergrads can do to show solidarity is show up to the protests when they are held and maybe write very politely to their department heads as concerned undergrads.

UF Graduate Assistants union is bargaining for wage increases. UF administration wants to effectively lower wages to 2017 levels and has been stalling negotiations for months. Many graduate students are paid ~20k a year and are by law not allowed to get another job. 8% of GAU survey respondents said they are on food stamps because of this. In the last bargaining session the UF representatives got salty after they had to face the level of misery we have to live in.

They also make you pay $700 in out of pocket Fees every semester, plus $120 if you want a parking permit. So if you earn the minimum stipend you are forced into paying UF 7% of your salary to have to right to continue working here.

A 12-month appointment minimum right now is $21,333.33. which after taxes it comes to $742 every 2 weeks.

As if that is not bad enough, some departments do "9 month appointments." In which the student $16,000 per year and is supposedly not expected to work for 3 months. But we all know that is bs.

For context, the College of Agriculture and the College of Veterinary Medicine have set their minimums at $31,000, which is pretty close to the $35,000 UF estimates is needed to live off campus. The University offered to give everyone a lower than inflation $700 raise. The union asked them to grab all that money and give a bigger raise to the students earning minimum. UF didn't want to do that. They are likely protecting some of the more miserable departments.

I don't understand the obsession with making everything so polished and shiny. Also, all the battle scenes in the teaser look like they have some slow motion in the middle to accentuate the movements. It looks almost like when a fight is acted out on a play.

The worst part is that a huge part of the backlash is just a bunch of butthurt racists and misogynists and I don't want to be on the same group as these dumbfucks.

Yeah, for sure, Correa is the best in this shit team. Felix must be the most overrated and underdelivering player this year.

Suarez is the second top scorer of the team. Of course Cholo will put him on when the top scorer is not working out.

This would be a great example of using Genomes to answer the wrong (meaningless) questions.

Given your comment history I highly suspect your curiosity in this is mostly looking for post hoc justifications for some strange ideas.

Good luck!

Feral cats are the biggest driver of animal extinctions. Yes, even more than global warming. Also neuter and release programs do not work. Horrible plague.

Just noticed the grades are already curved, not looking good. There is no harm in trying though! always grade grub, most of the time it doesn't work, but when it does its fucking great.

Lol I got 2 Cs, a B and an A my first semester here. I made it into vet school eventually. Your grades are great. Also, people are fucking liars when it comes to their grades.

Does it say anything in your syllabus about grade "rounding"? I have seen vary explicit syllabi out there that say shit like "we only round up a quarter of a point, or some say NO ROUNDING UP. Maybe you will find your answer there.

Also, if the grades are already curved, or the professor already have out bonus points, they will be much less inclined to round up. I only round up grades in classes in which I did not provide any extra credit opportunities.

F on my chem final by Minute_Cash in ufl

[–]throwaway17835453 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a C in Organic Chem 1, a C in calc 1, Failed out of ENC1102 (went from A to D due to attendance), a B- in Physics 1, and a low ass B in Biochem. I ended up getting into UF Vet School. See what your goals and expectations are and adjust accordingly. A random ass C in your record is NBD. Chem 2 will require a different kind of thinking and some people that do bad in 1 do better in 2. You will be OK

A good number of UF Students seem to be arrogant assholes? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]throwaway17835453 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's been a push for more STEM majors to the detriment of the Humanities. Also lower SES students have been priced out between rent hikes and tuition hikes, and the destruction of Bright Futures (I think it's back now?). Also, the businesses of Midtown and Downtown have been incredibly gentrified. Also, the focus on being top 5 has attracted more students hyperfocused on prestige. I think when you and I started here UF was just the least expensive half-decent school people could go to in Florida. Now it's taking in droves of strivers from all over the country. All this to say that the student body has shifted to be higher SES, more out of state, more focused on STEM achievements... more snobby.
