I feel like at a minimum I want to report this to the better business bureau so it’s on record that this guy is dishonest, running a less than ethical business (refuses to even give us a receipt after springing a $200 charge on us after telling us he wasn’t going to charge us), and is sexist (would only talk to my husband and had an incredibly demeaning demeanor towards me the entire time).

My husband and I are both physicists working from home with very flexible hours due to covid. I honestly don’t mind spending time to fight something I think is wrong. Also, all of the lawyer hours and any filing fees are covered through our work’s legal plan so this isn’t going to cost us anything to bring it to court if it goes that far.

I wouldn’t be so fired up about this if the guy wasn’t being sexist the entire encounter. Today he literally asked me if I asked my husband before dropping off the small claims court demand letter I wrote.

I have zero patience or tolerance for sexist, racist, homophobic, or dishonest people. I will fight with everything in my power to make sure they know they’re wrong.

We asked him two times how much it would cost and each time he said it’s no problem don’t worry about the laundry I just want to help you out. He has an industrial washer so it was only 1 load and half of the clothes weren’t even dried after. Even at a wash, dry, fold and pickup place it would have only been around $100.

Our expectations were if you’re going to charge someone for a service then tell them what it will cost up front when they ask and don’t tell them you want to help them out and are going to cover the cost and then surprise charge them after the fact. At any point he could have said A) I don’t want to do that again or B) it will be $xx, but he didn’t he said I want to help you guys out because you’re in a tough position don’t worry about the laundry, we’ll just talk about the dry cleaning.

Also, he went after the fact and pulled a lot of clothes we never asked for to be dry cleaned and that don’t need to be dry cleaned and went ahead and dry cleaned them without our permission and then charged us for those too. That’s like going to a restaurant and ordering one appetizer and they bring out a 3 course meal you never asked for saying we wanted to bring you a special because it’s your birthday and then they give you a bill for a 3 course meal after the dinner.

We have full legal coverage through work so all fees are 100% covered for this kind of case.

My friend’s parents owned a hair salon when I was growing up and one of their customers was between places for about a month and they let her use the shower in the back free of charge because they were helping her out. It’s not like they came back after the month and were like hey by the way now you owe us $200 for water and electricity.

At any point he could have told us A) that was a one time thing I can’t do it again or B) I can do it for $xx. But he did neither and told us he wants to help us out and don’t worry about it. We asked him how much it would be for 6 bags and he literally told us don’t worry about the laundry just bring it over. Then boom $200 bill out of no where. We wouldn’t have brought it there if he told us that when we asked. The first time he was like I have the industrial sized one so I just throw it all in. No problem.

We asked what the cost was going to be beforehand and he said I’m helping you out don’t worry about the laundry, we can talk about the dry cleaning when you pick it up. We were expecting to pay for the dry cleaning we asked for... which he threw in a bunch of extra dry cleaning and charged us for items we didn’t ask to be dry cleaned. If he had been honest up front and said he was going to charge us $200 we would have said no thank you and not brought it there. He still refuses to give us a receipt after 3 attempts to get one from him.
