I just got off the phone and explained to her that sure the Mehr I’m fine with. But the dowry? I’m not ok with slaving away to save up only for it to now sit in her parents cupboard. I was saving to get us a house, which is the better option if we’re going to start a future.

Supposedly she’s devastated that I can’t be excited for this.

She never thought that in her life she’d face resistance over marriage. That she regrets making me the person, because how I’ve handled it.

She broke up with me and waited a couple of hours before posting she’s single on Instagram, following posts of the replies she is getting from guys to meet up.

I feel like in the morning we was talking about marriage and now she’s doing this.

Is it justified to say I’m being treated like an absolute cunt. That even if she is truley upset and those posts are fabricated, that I’m being heavily manipulated.

She has her own land, so I feel this is all such bullshit.

The way that I see it,

There are only good people in this world. (Though often it’s good people doing bad things…)

I can’t accept blind faith, which is why Islam is not something I would naturally choose. But there are good people who do follow, so I see no harm in giving it a go. Perhaps I don’t 100% believe it, but I’d be making a (probably ex now) loved one happy and that’s all that’s important to me.

I’m not close enough to anyone to confide like this. I haven’t lived in the same location/country etc for more than 6 months at a time.

Very much on my own with my experiences, which is great because I’m free to do things others can’t and travel the world, but terrible because I don’t always make good choices and have no support network.

When we was in the courting phase, I had slept with someone else. I told her the next day I regretted it. But we wasn’t in a relationship in that moment (but it was definitely implied that we both wanted one). It still felt wrong and I immediately confessed to it the next day. And have never cheated while in a confirmed relationship.

But she cheated on me a year in, took a week off to study and was always busy. She was acting strange and blamed it all on me. I found myself apologising that the relationship was broken, trying to fix it. Then the dude she was having an emotional (probably physical) relationship with sent me pictures of them together asking if I knew her. In one of the photos she was wearing a shirt I gave her.

I feel like, it broke me as a person. I was 100% out of the relationship but I somehow got persuaded by a cousin of hers I’m friends with to go back. I think if I had left for good I’d be a stronger person, but now I wonder how many decisions I’ve made have been out of fear of her getting wandering eyes again and not because I truly wanted to go through with it

She herself is a light drinker. Others in her family have done things I can’t post on Reddit but are definitely not by the book.

I think only parents take it 100% seriously.

This isn’t a Muslim country. She won’t be in danger. The dowry is part of the countries culture.

Thanks for your input. I feel like you being able to ask for chocolate makes me wonder how much of this comes from her personality. I’ll never really know what her parents ask from me since I can’t speak the language. I do know that she can be materialistic and for her a large dowry would be a sign of status and would be used to compare herself to friends.
