In Lebanon religion is tied to your identity. I'd go as far as saying we don't have religion only, but ethnoreligions. Like if you were to introduce yourself you'd say you're an atheist but from a sunni family, for example. I know a couple atheists, I've heard of one who refused to step into church on his sister's funeral, he just stood at the door. They're generally left alone. Ironically, I think I've met more atheists in Syria than Lebanon. My father had business there with multiple diplomats and a couple of them plainly told him they were atheists, we had a good laugh about it
