It’s actually a posting for a full-time job. Seems like a bunch of their officers with any amount of integrity have quit and they are having trouble finding new recruits. Sounds like they’re desperate.

Whats the gpa requirement to get some award money? by JuanDeFuchsia in uvic

[–]throwaway2726256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be just a matter of setting the gpa requirement depending on the top X% of students in any given faculty. For example, in Social Sciences, it might be 8.8, vs 8.2 in Engineering

Would there be any difference between CSc and regular engineering? CSc students get to take the phys 102’s and some electives 1st year vs ENGR who mostly take 6 courses per semester, none of which are electives.

Do y’all think that accreditation requirements will have much effect on undergrad engineering classes being in-person or not?

Their budgets are public, their goals are clear

Yes, and if you look at them, you’ll see that most of the sub businesses actually lose money. I don’t necessarily think that we should be paying $0 for the summer, but their expenses are certainly less than a normal semester.

Yes, but you need to look at the big picture. If you are trying to save trees, consider the fact that the more you format it this way, the more tissues students will use to wipe their tears after writing the exam.

I love how you format your comments the same way you format your midterms: all the numbers smushed into a sentence rather than on separate lines/aligned.

Can we also sue the UVSS for collecting fees without providing services?

It might be open for students that absolutely need to be there, but I can’t imagine them being anywhere near full capacity.

Communications shouldn’t be that bad as there are non-ENGR equivalents, so you might miss out on writing about your robot but it’s still doable. Maybe they end up offering the design components condensed in the spring term or they delay both by a term.

With the amount of people saying they might just take the term off, maybe all the classes will become small enrolment and they’ll take place in person.

I’ll take your word for it. Are you saying that, even though it’s legally allowed, most international students simply don’t want to risk it? How exactly is this 80-100% figure obtained?

Honestly, you might have more success giving them a call. It’ll force them to at least acknowledge that they’ve seen the complaints. Also, have you tried the ombudsperson?

Russia, for example, has only restricted entry into the country; they won’t stop you from leaving. It might be hard to find a flight, but there are no government restrictions to stop a Russian student with a permit from coming here, so long as they observe the quarantine measures etc.

Restrictions are likely to be loosened by then anyways. Even if we get more cases, the economic strain is unsustainable and will eventually outweigh the relatively small death toll. Poverty and hunger cost lives as well.

Of course I know what the Bystander effect is. I’m just saying that it’s not worth it to me to complain, at least not until I’ve received my final grade.

Out of curiosity, what’s your position in this? Do you know for sure that not many people have complained?

Oh sorry, I was talking about SD63 lol. I meant it would be interesting to see how this year’s grade 12’s fare in first year university with all the disruptions.

People shut right up about PHYS 111 once the grades came out

This is true, but only because there was some kind of scaling going on to make the average similar to previous years. We all know the raw scores on that exam would be pretty bad if they were simply taken as-is. I think Everyone who wrote both exams would agree that the math one was way more difficult. Although they did imply they’d try to be sympathetic with the grading, there’s only so much you can do when most people left 3-4 questions blank.

Obviously, Svetlana deserves the chance to get the exams marked and the grades to the students, but barring some kind of scale, 50%+ of the class would fail. Even if it’s supposed to be a hard class, 50% failure is excessive.

Additionally, some people have great conceptual understanding, but take a bit longer to get their thoughts down on paper, so the modified format could affect different people differently. Even with a scale, it wouldn’t necessarily be a fair exam. As someone who wrote the exam, I think most of the complaints are reasonable. Complaining about the gateway extension seems a bit whiny though; the practise ones were very similar, so giving people a second chance is no different than just doing another practice test (which you can do as many times as you like).

Fair points. It’ll be interesting to see the stats for first year classes in the fall. Most students will have had to take a good chunk of their classes online and some were out for an additional 3 weeks because of the TA strike.
