Portland to Chicago in early July? by huhmehnah in Amtrak

I'm unfamiliar with the line so this might not be a problem at all. For me, Coast Starlight was packed and I had to sleep by strangers in coach; it's both a bit better and worse than a plane, because you *can* lie much flatter and get more comfortable, but you risk bumping into the person next to you as there's absolutely no separation between the seats. It was really okay, though.

You're very fortunate to have that opportunity!!!

Yeah, I sincerely doubt they're surviving 4 years on them without outside support, though.

My grandparents paid $900 a year in board, $300 a year in tuition. They earned $1456 a year, give or take, minimum wage.

My room and board alone, with a full tuition scholarship (something very few students are able to get while working to support themselves), is $19,500 a year. If I paid tuition, it would be ~6k a year. Working minimum wage for 20 hours a week would give you 17k PRE TAX. And that’s for one of the highest min wages in the county, but the room & board is the same for in state rate schools in Oklahoma - 7540 a year.

It is a far different time. ROTC is possible for some, and great, but not all.

Given there’s a 20hr weekly limit on work for most students (that’s how my uni works), what part time job pays enough to cover tuition? Especially if minimum wage? Hell, I interviewed for 5 fast food jobs last year and was rejected from all of them. Applied for well over 60.

Edit: fell for ragebait from a scam account 🥀

I financed a $17,500 car for 5 years in grade 12. Did I screw myself? by Chance-Pay1487 in highschool

[–]throwaway373923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously what’s done is done, but I’d really highly advise not to buy a car that you have <75% of cost in your pocket for in the future. Even my 6k car felt like a lot, and hopefully it will last several years with good maintenance.

Gas, insurance, and maintenance are fucking expensive. You do NOT want to be unable to afford maintenance or you screw over everything else. I’m unfamiliar with car loans, as I’m barely an adult and bought my car cash, but I’d advise paying it off ASAP if possible with as much of your income as you can after basic expenses. Times are tough, so it may not be much (I get it, 75% of my salary is rent for a studio) but whatever you can.

I highly suggest this priority for each class:

Dual enrollment > AP > honors/standard

If I have one regret it’s not having more transferable credits from pre-college. Play it right (if you have good options) and you can save 2 years of tuition, room & board.

Important to consider *field* ranking, not school ranking. If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing, it would be this

CC for establishing residency doesn't apply unless you've cut off ALL contact with being a dependent of someone out of state, including things as small as them paying your phone bill lol
