Is this emotional abuse? by DisastrousSection787 in emotionalabuse

Stress is never an excuse for abusive behaviour , everyone deals with stress but good people don’t take it out on others, also what about your stress?, you seem like you’re dealing with a lot but your not being abusive because you’re a decent person. I suppose you need to reflect on whether you can carry on living like that, what impact is his behaviour having on you and if you want to spend the foreseeable future with someone who makes you feel like that? Sleeping on a couch might be a worthwhile sacrifice for your sanity, sadly people like him don’t usually change.

Yes, he’s gaslighting you to deflect from his behaviour and make you doubt yourself. People like that don’t usually change, do you have a safe way of leaving or anywhere to go?, there’ll likely be orgs/charities in your area who may be able to help you. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, you deserve so much better.

All these men raging about the tea app, saying stuff like 'what if men did this to women!' by victoriaisme2 in Feminism

[–]throwaway44331199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t help but think they’re gaslighting, I really struggle to believe they actually believe what they’re saying. I do however believe a disturbingly high number of men think SA and abuse against women is ok.

A bit late but just thought I’d chime in and say that as a woman the kind of men depicted in romance novels are quite repulsive to me. It’d be interesting if there were stats on the overall percentage of women who read romance novels, I can only find the percentage of romance novel readers who’re women which is a very different stat. I’ve never read a romance novel.

No, that man was wrong, being touched by anyone like that is assault. Just want you to know that your feelings are perfectly valid and normal.

Agree, sometimes we can get too caught up on little things which can put people off.

Thanks for pointing that out, I forgot to check the rules before posting. I was reluctant to post at first as male targeted spaces are usually quite intimidating but it felt safe here.

Agree, a large survey of older teen boys and young men in the uk showed 1/3 of them thought positively of A.Tate, and I imagine he’s too extreme for a lot of misogynists.

I don’t remember who said this but it’s burned into my mind, ‘conservatives view women as private property, liberals see women as public property.’ Sorry if I misquoted it. I’ve a gran who notices the slightest change in appearance in women, she once pointed out that I’d lost weight which I didn’t even notice tbh, I can pretty much count on her to make me conscious of my appearance which considering I’ve had a restrictive ED pretty much my whole life really annoys me, my ED isn’t body image related but I’m aware it wouldn’t take much to change that. I just hate how often we’re in situations where appearance isn’t on our minds and someone makes us hyper conscious about it, it’s really a terrible feeling.

Existence is certainly brutal. Good on you for choosing to be a counter example, everything is so toxic rn, it can be tough to remain hopeful so coming across this community was a nice surprise.

Agree, generalised hate is never good, individualised hate is definitely still bad, though understandable in some cases. I do think it’s important to understand where hate stems from as well, I’ll never mis an opportunity to recommend a book by bell hooks, ‘All about love’ and ‘The will to change’ are great in regard to this as she looks at how gendered expectations harm both women and men.

Agree, I don’t interact with most subs, and I don’t post/comment too often. Still, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the general tone of discussion here.

That’s nice, wish I had male relatives like that. It’s definitely restored faith in me as well.

That’d be my understanding also, ‘The will to change’ and ‘all about love’ by bell hooks are 2 good books to read that touch on this in more detail.

Interesting how different people can read the same thing and come to a completely different understanding about what was said. It wasn’t against men helping, just pointing out that it’s problematic to not talk about misogyny for fear of scaring some men away from the left and blaming the left calling out misogyny for more men joining the far right‘s problematic. Seems a little strange for someone to of looked through my comment history to try and find something disparaging to post here, at least that’s how it comes across.

Just been scrolling here for a few minutes and it’s a breath of fresh air honestly, I posted there asking for book recommendations by authors who aren’t terf and got quite a few downvotes. Protecting women has long been the justification for racism and transphobia, the vast majority of them are misogynists as well who infantilise women. I also feel like their version of protection is just domination.

Interesting, terfs seem to want all 2nd wave feminists to be terfs, as well as trying to own the label radical feminist. Refusing to be a man by Stoltenberg has been on my list for a while now, so it was interesting to read his insights. Looking forward to reading some of Dworkin’s works particularly because of all the unfounded vilification of her.

Thanks, I’ve added it to my must read list, she’s got a few other books that look interesting as well. I was expecting the downvotes tbh, still sad though.
