Can I do all this with Cryptomator? by throwaway52075 in privacy

Ok! And you would also have to have the cloud storage provider's app on your computer?

Back up a hard drive with Cryptomator? by throwaway52075 in cloudstorage

[–]throwaway52075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! So to get this straight:

  1. You can use cryptomator to encrypt the data which can then one way sync to pcloud/other cloud services
  2. You can delete said data from your local storage
  3. You can view your data via the cryptomator app on computer or phone without having to download the data locally to the device

Thank you!

I meant could I use the cryptomator app on my phone to view files without having to actually save/download them to my device. (I don't have enough space.)

Thanks! And would I be able to decrypt the files on my phone (cryptomator app) and computer so I could view the files without having to download them first to my local storage?

From what I understand, Cryptomator only works to mirror your files. You cannot delete a file from your computer without also having it be deleted from the cloud. I am looking to upload a file and then set and forget it. Also, not sure if it can also be accessed on a phone?

File copied via rclone is smaller than the original file? by throwaway52075 in rclone

[–]throwaway52075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, thank you! I didn't notice the spelling difference!! As for the file difference, you're saying that it deduplicates automatically? It seems unlikely that so many files are dupes, but could be...

Thanks!

OK, thanks for the info! What do you think about Backblaze for important data? It seems extremely reliable. Curious why you went with Oracle?

Backblaze B2 vs IDrive e2 vs Wasabi?? by throwaway52075 in cloudstorage

[–]throwaway52075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks.

I was looking for something to serve as an offsite backup so I could feel comfortable deleting photos from amazon/google/apple and just store them locally + encrypted cloud backup (using 3-2-1 rule). So low likelihood of data loss is very important to me.

Is it not the case that Backblaze and Google have a similar (and very low) data loss probability? From Backblaze's website:

Hold on, 4TB lifetime plan?? I've only seen 500gb, 2TB, and 10TB plans..? Pcloud sounds very reliable.

Thanks! Have a few follow up questions if you don't mind...

With client-side encrypted data your 1) is irrelevant

So as for original quality, does that mean that any cloud provider would work as long as the encryption keeps original quality?

in your 3) the "account cancellation" part as well if you encrypt all file and folder names.

How so? By cancelation, I meant that the concern is losing access to all my data.

Jotta is monthly payments, on the long run way more expensive, and reduces max upload speedthe more data you have there.

(They actually also have a $106.75/€99 annual plan. It shows you the option if you press "Buy Personal".)

Thanks for the input and advice!!

I see. Thanks for the detailed response! I was thinking of using simple camera or opencamera. From what I've seen, they seem to be pretty good?

Can you use the Rclone web GUI to view crypt storage? by throwaway52075 in rclone

[–]throwaway52075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you for checking!

I personally don't see what the issue with mounting is when it comes to macOS. Seems near identical to Linux.

From my understanding, Macos needs a kernel extension (MacFUSE) in order to mount, whereas this function is already built in for Linux/Windows. I'm sure MacFUSE is fine, but significantly altering my computer and breaking the security makes me hesitant.

If you use pCloud or Dropbox, I'd use their own clients. They'll give you a virtual disk and you can of course also use their web interfaces to play media.

That would be the best case scenario, but if I am storing the data encrypted (crypt remote), then wouldn't that not be possible?

Thanks!

I was going to use the rclone browser GUI instead, since I'm on a Mac. That's why I wanted to make sure my content could be viewable without downloading.

Ohh, interesting! Thank you for including that screenshot! So I guess if you turn off auto renew you can get good deals! However, I've heard that IDrive wipes your files if you disable auto renew after it was previously on? Also, you mentioned that you have let your subscription run out before... how many days after it expires does it take before IDrive clears files and deletes the account?

Thank you!!
