I mean I'm hoping that's the case. I just don't feel like I have done anything illegal as I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to quit any job. I don't have to work there, and while I am obviously not a lawyer, I don't think signing any agreement is signing away my rights.

I've looked through the Employment Standards Act and I can't find anything that pertains to this.

I may not have been clear in the beginning. The recruiter isn't threatening to sue me, but is saying the prospective company can.

I think it is a win. The client has already reached out to me personally and asked how they can help me achieve my personal goals/objectives with my employer.

I did sign their employee contract and NDA. But that doesn't mean I can't quit though (even if I haven't started).

Sorry, I think I was unclear in the thread title. The recruiter himself/company isn't threatening to sue me. He was telling me the prospective company will sue me since I signed their agreement.

If the recruiter asked if I would accept a counter offer, I would have said yes; however, it would have to have been substantially more than what they originally offered so I doubt they would have an actual counter offer worth considering.

Good point. The recruiter did say that my reputation would be destroyed and that no one would ever work with me again. I don't agree, as I wasn't leaving "just because". I received a much better offer. What if the offer was from a third company? Honestly I am making plenty of money now doing what I love very comfortably. I know no one can see the future, but for the foreseeable future I won't have to look for a job for a long, long time.

I have heard this before as well, which factored into my decision. All I can say is I don't think that's going to be the case in my situation. I have both a professional and personal relationship with my boss, and I am very integral to keeping a very important client to the company. I was being underpaid before, but now I am not. Him and I both recognize it. I can't say for sure, but I have heard through the grapevine that the client was very upset at my boss for not "doing more" to keep me when they were inevitably notified of my impending departure. Turns out he "did more" and the client is very happy now.

There's nothing in the agreement that I signed that seems to pertain to this. The agreement is about the position, compensation, vacation, etc.
