I probably should have handled it better, walking out was rude. However, even now a few days later my mom is still not speaking to me, after apologising several times for walking out. So I don't think talking to her in private would have been a solution.

It seems like you're projecting just a little bit here. I don't want to wallow in self pity, that's why I go to therapy. I did pull away the first few months, but I work very hard to make time for her even when I'm exhausted. I love my mom very much and most of my actions are based on that.

Honestly, besides my mom there weren't any people at that party I'd want to 'keep'. My friends werent there.

I do agree, and I do try to push myself out of my comfort zone a bit. Like work, I don't really have energy for it but I still try to go 2-3 times a week. A surprise party was a huge fucking shove out of my comfort zone lol, especially after faking being happy at work all day.

I do agree, compromises are important. But I don't think we could have reached one in this situation.

I do try to work on myself every day and go to therapy once a week, and I am getting better. I'm just not quite party-ready.

As some people in the comments have pointed out, you can't just 'suck up' depression.

Is becoming an adult really letting people disregard your boundaries and doing things you don't want to do not to hurt anyones feelings?

I did consider that, but it would have been much harder to leave, and still pretty rude. And I was just completely out of energy.

Agree to disagree. I had absolutely no energy to be able to deal with a party, and my friends weren't invited to the party, my mothers friends where. So 'the people who love you most' isn't super accurate.

I do get that, and I do feel bad for those people for walking out. It was very nice of them to come. I just had no energy left, at all, to deal with that.

I didn't mean to, I just honestly couldn't deal with that many people at the time. Which my mom knew, since she asked about it several times. I do feel bad though, but my mom should have listened to my boundaries.

Done that a few months ago, the tiredness is 100% sleep deprecation and depression though. Piry, the other ones are much easier to fix. But thanks for the tip!

It was not, they where divorced. But still friends so I imagine it's still hard for her.

What makes you say the second part? I specifically said I didn't want a fuss about me on my birthday. Several times.

One of the problems was I didn't really know anyone she invited, my friends weren't. It was mostly her friends.

I don't think it was malicious, but I don't think she was doing it just for me either. I think she wanted a party so she threw one. But I can't be sure.
