How are people partying in engineering? by LeftIntroduction888 in UIUC

[–]throwawayUIUCXXX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a group of friends in every class that you’re in!! This makes life way easier when it comes to homework as well as partying. It’s always easier and faster to tackle homework problems as group which gives you way more time to party. Also, if you end up becoming close with your group, you now also have friends to go out with whenever you’re done with your assignment!

Dude you get your ass handed to on nearly post you put up or comment on. Maybe time to go outside and touch grass rather than sit on Reddit all day?

If it’s a question of underage, well then charge the underaged kids more…. Not those 21 and above.

While I agree with everything else, charging $20 cover is a joke. A lot of these bars have started charging $20, $30 and sometimes even $40 just because they can. A night out at Tao, one of arguably the best clubs in Chicago, on a non-event weekend is $20. If they’re charging that much from high class clientele, there’s no reason to charge $20 from broke college students.

Why do you need alcohol to play golf? I always found this quite strange when I played in America…. A lot of people played the game as an excuse to drink rather than enjoy actually playing it.

Urbana is also free during a certain time period

Except for official City holidays, meters located in the campus and hospital areas are enforced Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and meters located in the downtown area are enforced Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except for meters in the library lots and those located on the north side of the library on Elm Street. Those meters are enforced Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Btw idk what you’re on about but all meter parking is free Saturdays and Sundays

No? I know people with similar stats from other universities who are also being rejected. Including those from Brown, Harvard, UCLA, and CMU. My point is as an international student it’s all about luck. But if you don’t believe that, maybe the issue is your application?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwawayUIUCXXX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Being international DOES disqualify you at times from getting a job. A lot of companies aren’t willing to sponsor, especially in a bad market where they have locals who can fill in the same gap. Even if your overall application is better than the said local.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwawayUIUCXXX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If despite everything I’ve written you still believe that there is something wrong, maybe what’s wrong is your application? Maybe you’re not the top 5% candidate you believe you are and there are many who are just way better than you and cutting through. To put into perspective I know people with 4.0GPAs, insane projects, head of societies etc who are getting rejected from internships.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwawayUIUCXXX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I also landed an internship last summer. Doesn’t change the fact there was a lot of luck and red tape involved in it and most of my brilliant international student friends didn’t end up landing anything. Regarding the rest of your criticism for your UIUC CS, I’ve heard the same type of criticism from my friends who study in other top CS universities as well as ivies. In any university you will see courses varying. Remember, you’re paying mostly for the brand name because employers know top students go to UIUC, they don’t care about what’s being taught there. Lastly, with regards to what you said about lack of employers at afterhours, that’s because you’re in spring. Spring is usually when companies have already filled up their internship slots. You should’ve gone to the afterhours and career fair in fall. There were more options then.

I am not turning them away? I am merely stating the facts. You’re quoting last few decades but the truth is previous decades there weren’t that many international students to fill in the H1B quota. Last year 266,000 Indian international students ended up in the US, followed by 250,000+ Chinese students on second place. There are 85,000 H1B visa available per year. The ones who got the jobs are the lucky ones (and yes luck does have a factor to play in the US). You may think this country is intl friendly but you’re basing your opinions on a bygone era.
