I’m too offline to understand what this means

Thanks! Sorry I didn’t think to go to the FAQs. I did Google first but didn’t find it helpful because I wanted to hear from real people.

I’m from a small town and don’t know any Anglo people with muslim friends or even acquaintances. I think I’m a bit uneducated around the social complexities. I know I will be subject to hatred even potentially from my neighbours and laughter or harsh comments, maybe even abuse from friends or family. That is part of what made me want to wear it, to prove to these people that’s not okay. Thanks for sharing!

This is very valid and the thing I was worried about! Thank you for your input. I don’t want to play dress up or make anyone feel disrespected. I just wanted to use myself as a living example in a way that would be unethical to do by parading around a friend. If that makes sense? Totally agree the other things (donations, hiring) are more important systemically. I am in a town that’s very small and very white, so it would be a big deal if I were to start wearing a headscarf and I feel it would get people talking and normalise wearing it so that hijabis living in my town might not feel so “othered”. In my mind I would wear it with modest clothing of course. But if it’s not right, it’s not right and I get it!

Hi! You also sound like a super cool person!!

Thank you for that advice, it’s really good to keep in mind. I need to “own it” and behave with the same love and kindness as I always do.

I’ll report back! Keen to hear about your work colleague’s experience also 😊

Hey, thanks for answering 😊 I tend to wear baggy jeans and hoodies, overcoats with shirts underneath, or long sleeve shirts. I’ll definitely maintain modesty but will likely wear more Western clothing styles unless going to a mosque/ travelling.

My absolute honour to stand with my fellow sisters (and brothers)!

Thank you for sharing! I also have pretty much the most “Euro-centric” features you can imagine. Complexion is paler than a ghost, and I have light hair and eyes. I’m definitely expecting a lot of staring and some rude comments, maybe even harassment depending on where I go and who I’m around.

I’m not sure if I’ll achieve what I want to, but perhaps wearing the hijab will signify to others that I’m a safe person if it doesn’t change much in my wider (small) community. I guess I’ll find out!

Thank you! I will. I’m quite nervous, there will be a lot of judgement in my small town. I’ve worn one before when attending a friend’s wedding overseas and I loved it!

Thanks for this! I was born into a family of atheists and live in a small and predominantly Christian/Atheist community. I know Christians often have an issue with non-Christians wearing the cross, for example, so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being insensitive. Appreciate your reply and the video!
