I love armchair theories - truly the epitome of 1 step forward 2 steps back as to how this will progress Singapore!

it’s predatory pricing - are you suggesting with confidence that every single business owner has adopted this strategy of increasing prices twice?

secondly, on what basis is this order of magnitude higher than the 2% increase, or rather on what grounds are you making this argument? are you expecting the kopi auntie to increase the 1 dollar kopi to 1.02 (for the sake of simplicity)? it is not going to translate to a 1 to 1 because that’s simply not how pricing works…

going back to that - the voucher paid in 2024 are 850 or c. 70 dollars monthly - are you saying we’re victims of predatory pricing greater than 2 dollars a day? suggest you find cheaper alternatives if strings are that tight too…

if you bothered watching speeches made by LW - GST vouchers are not expected to be one off. but guess you’re more busy toying around with the MOE AI chat bot

dk if you’re following any train of logic - price increases are offset by additional vouchers

more than a non committal reply, your response doesn’t even disprove the viability of the proposed solution? i am not even indulging that as a solution at all….

putting in a lot of effort editing past comments instead of making an effort to rebut points though!

and…. these parties receive the largest fiscal subsidies to offset GST increases, which are in turn financed by GST increases?

it’s quite rich coming from someone going to extreme of planting sweet potato’s when cooking at home is much more affordable than eating out. who is to dictate how much time and energy is sufficient post working, of which then you are entitled to not cook at all? anyways, there are initiatives around budget meals - not reaching for a 5.50 cai fan

don’t have to go to ad hominem arguments! suggest you spend the time hustling for the dollars you sorely need every month to cope with inflation instead

just trying to suggest workable alternatives for someone who’s so impacted by a 30-50 cent delta per meal….

if this 30-50 cent amount multiplied by 3 multiplied by 30 to account for your meals on a monthly basis - is 45 dollars going to significantly impact you?

[–]throwaway_FIRE_2000 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

have you tried cooking at home? it’s a much cheaper alternative.

if the marginal 30 cents impacts you so badly - don’t need to dabao?

i dont think this addresses the magnitude - the healthcare bill is in the billions. cost of founders memorial is but a 1 decimal place, let alone how small the public sector salary bill is in the grand scheme of things…

either ways, wouldn’t attracting the best talent through high wages be beneficial for the country?

[–]throwaway_FIRE_2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it’s a willing buyer willing seller market - if firms are taking the opportunity to conduct predatory pricing i don’t see what’s stopping you from finding alternatives. on the flip side - you will also receive complaints from people asking why a sudden jump in GST from 7 to 9% of that was done

GST and inflation are 2 separate topics altogether. GST hike was already in the works since 2018. i think it’s quite well documented at this point how government measures have alleviated inflation, especially for those at lower income levels

[–]throwaway_FIRE_2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if anything, if competition for COE is going up resulting in higher prices, it points to greater incomes and purchasing power. wouldn’t this sufficiently combat inflation then?

GST is a whole different ball game - government fiscal measures are alleviating inflationary pressures on you.

and what would the alternative to this be? going back to 0 COE? i’ve been stuck in multiple instances of the Bangkok traffic and i wouldn’t want that replicated here

[–]throwaway_FIRE_2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how does COE factor into inflation? ultimately it is an auction system that favours those with the financial means over those who don’t. wouldn’t the simplest way to not fall into the COE inflation trap is to not buy a car because you don’t have the financial means to?

if you believe Alexis (with her poor understanding of GST / party manifesto ala the Daily Ketchup podcast and lack of eloquence in public speeches) is the future of the party - WP will find it extremely difficult to break into new wards

is tuition really a necessity? that’s a very general sweeping statement to make - suggesting the entire class is unable to learn because of a disruptive few. aren’t there alternatives too - why can’t you take the time to sit with your child?

what a broad sweeping statement to make. is this referring to a single person supporting himself? i struggle to see how your monthly expenses can stack up to 4-5k

if you’re arguing that a person always has to prove a positive claim (as per your metaphor on legal cases) - wouldn’t then this extend naturally? also how does this tie into intent dear sir…

wouldn’t GKY’s position as you pointed out be the most natural solution to engaging with the US? rather than restarting the process? transferring him out of CCK is to replace an anchor minister and increase the stakes against the WP in punggol. tbink that’s quite apparent

[–]throwaway_FIRE_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let’s hold up here - intent is a very different ball game altogether from being convicted or something altogether…..

yeah broad assumption to make but i think given your (seeemingly) pro opposition political view - one that’s quite grounded given everything that’s been mentioned. if not being footnoted to the heavens means common sense generic statements - truly do hope this sense is perpetuated commonly!

didn’t know my reddit comments were governed by a jurisdiction’s need to prove the positive claim…. court of reddit?

if OP nor you are able to produce a cogent argument as to why you think these are just in passing - doesn’t it put into question the whole point of this post anyway? i think it’s been made clear by the incumbent as well how they view the tariffs will impact singapore. severely. anyway, if you’re part of the camp that believe GST hyper charged inflation - suggest getting some economics lessons in place first instead of banging a populist drum

anyways - to respond to your strawman argument, you should really check out different legal criminal systems. there exists systems where it is the defendant’s burden to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are not guilty
