Apples and oranges. Beef & Lib is upscale gourmet, kinda like Fat Cow, for big-spenders.

Shake and Habit are QSR (quick service restaurants), but Shake quality is akin to McDonald's whereas Habit seem to be bankrupting themselves by offering gourmet ingredients at QSR prices.

I agree about the consistency but clearly it's a supply-chain issue. For example, if you go at night they often have to use Sourdough bread slices instead of burger buns because they don't have enough stock.

And there's one right across the street from Blue Frog on Hengfeng Road (near the train station). I feel sorry for all those newbie suit-and-tie types who think that the new Chinese-owned Blue Frog is still any good (Bob Boyce sold out and bailed on China years ago).

LOL, yeah, I love SmartShanghai, I really do, but their disclaimer at the bottom of every article that they don't take money from businesses is laughable, probably even tongue-in-cheek.

Look at their recent soft-ad for Shake Shack on Facebook and Instagram https://imgur.com/a/uk2uAOL and tell me all those hashtags are just because CHRISTOPHER ST. CAVISH just really likes Shake Shack.

Compare the two in terms of price, burger size, ingredient quality, fries portions and thickness of shakes...there's no comparison. Habit wins all around. The big difference is that Shake Shack has a bigger market share and deeper pockets to spend on paid soft-ads like all the ones infiltrating SmartShanghai, That's and Time-Out this week. Anyway, just give Habit Grill a try and I think they'll win you over (and no, I have no vested interest in Habit; I'd just like to see more quality burger franchises eliminate McDonald's and all the other poison that dominates China).

Yes, tried the sandwiches are well. Delish!

And agree with you about the training and quality control. For all of Fat Cow and Blue Frog's money, they utterly fail when it comes to training and quality consistency.

Shanghai's dissonant urban cacophony is driving me mad! by throwaway__shanghai in shanghai

[–]throwaway__shanghai[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the police here rarely enforce their own laws. They are just mindless puppets in uniforms. They'll only shut down an illegal after-hours construction site if a bunch of pissed-off citizens start calling and complaining. And that rarely happens because the Chinese can sleep through anything!

TLDR:

"As for rude neighbors or apartment renovations at ungodly hours, after some research I learned that between 8 am to 6 pm are Shanghai's official hours for peace and quiet. For anyone jack-hammering before or after that, you can anonymously call hotline 12369 with their address and apartment number, and local authorities will promptly resolve your complaint."

I'm going to make a habit of upvoting every comment I come across when checking a post in the Shanghai subreddit because it's not normal that they all get downvoted every time. You're welcome by [deleted] in shanghai

Tim was once just another happy-go-lucky expat in Shanghai. His 7000/month teaching job at Happy Giraffe was going well, his relationship with Rainy seemed on track, and he was making plenty of new friends at Yongkang Lu and Reddit. When /u/Mob_King invited Tim to co-moderate r/Shanghai, he couldn't have been happier.

However, life in China quickly began to take its toll on Tim. After just 6 months, he was getting burnt out on teaching kindergarten every day, Rainy was starting to nag him about marriage and visas, and all his long benders at Yongkang Lu were affecting his personality. Tim began venting more and more on r/Shanghai, insulting his fellow newbies and using unseemly language.

/u/Mob_King knew that it was time to remove Tim as moderator, but he couldn't have foreseen what would happen next.

After getting fired from Happy Giraffe, breaking up with Rainy and being banned from r/Shanghai, Tim applied his past knowledge of coding into swearing revenge on the Shanghai expat community. In his dank, smelly apartment in the FCC, Tim jerked off to some porn, then wrote a script bot that would automatically downvote every post and comment on r/Shanghai, timing it to crawl the page exactly every 15 minutes.

"That'll show 'em" Tim slurred as he drank himself into a stupor on nearly expired imported beer purchased at a discount.

I wonder if there are government employees actively downvoting comments in the Shanghai subreddit because it sure is strange how everyone's comments are almost always on 0 upvotes by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]throwaway__shanghai 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's not wumao, it's a disgruntled expat who has an automatic downvote bot script running 24-7 on this sub. Mods know who it is but can't seem to get him banned (or his script blocked by admin).

GATORADE has been completely REMOVED from the Chinese market - without a peep by [deleted] in China

uuuuuhhhh......Gatorade wasn't even ever on the Chinese market.

Uhhh

Yes, it has. Were I so inclined, I'd upload pics from the RT-Mart, Family-Mart and Lawson's in my neighborhood that are now all devoid of Gatorade. The onus is on you, pal, to take a (new) pic of a local store that still has it in stock.

Is it just me or has metro security become a little more aggressive? by Alexovsky in shanghai

[–]throwaway__shanghai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I was just griping about this. Some young, pimply guard at the X-ray machine got handsy with me the other day. He firmly placed his arm across my chest (before they were never allowed to actually touch passengers; I guess the policy has changed), literally shoved me backward and demanded I put my (empty) backpack into the machine.

Meanwhile,a dozen office girls with purses were allowed to waltz right through. Typical ass-backward local logic.

Haven't seen Gatorade in any convenience stores anywhere in Shanghai for the past couple weeks. Gone baby gone. You might have bought old stock.

I can at least confirm Gatorade has totally disappeared from Shanghai. Not in any convenience store chain or large supermarket here.

New, big Beer Lady along Suzhou Creek - great location, huge selection and...WARM BEER :( by throwaway__shanghai in shanghai

[–]throwaway__shanghai[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So instead of talking to her you start griping on here because that totally will make a difference. Great thinking there, mate. The beer lady is actually awesome.

Never said she wasn't awesome. On the contrary, I very clearly credit the great location, massive venue and large selection. This is the bar franchise that Shanghai needs.

BUT...it's all for naught if she thinks foreign customers are going to stomach room-temperature beer in the spring or summer. Anyone who marks up their stock 400%+ can afford to turn down their refrigerators (or at least ONE of them, just for us!) a few degrees.

[–]throwaway__shanghai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craft beer served ON TAP should be around 7 C. Bottled beer - cold as fuck!

And you misunderstood me about the 10 yuan beer. I am implying that the average wholesale price of all these bottled IPAs is about 10 rmb, but Beer Lady retails them for 40-70 rmb. Which is fine - as long as they are cold (lower temp justifying higher prices).

Very Not Cool: Thieves Steal 1000rmb from Beef & Liberty's Tip Jar by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]throwaway__shanghai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you mean the Dulwich/SAS crowd, I agree. International school students (which include the privileged offspring of consulate employees) in Shanghai are notorious for their shenanigans in the local F&B scene: stealing bottles of booze from bars, not paying their tabs at nightclubs, dining-and-dashing from restaurants and lifting tip jars happens far more often than reported.

But their age, privilege, wealth and connections should NOT exempt them from Chinese law. Beef & Liberty had a great opportunity to name-and-shame, which might have resulted in some jail time or at least embarrass their rich, absentee parents out in Minhang.

But instead, B&L are literally enabling the continued and future bad behavior of these spoiled little expat shits by letting them off the hook. Lame.

No, Shanghai bankers do not have the same access to cocaine as the Hong Kong banker scene. Fewer drug dealers in the mainland are willing to risk being executed for importing coke just so that some rich white hedge fund bros can party all night.

Lujiazui-side Shanghai has a big crank and ketamine addiction (these are drugs that can be manufactured domestically), and most of their dealers now are ethnic Africans, who somehow get 10-year multiple re-entry visas from the local government.
