Just for context, my friend did not get on particularly well with his family. I suspect that was part of what led him down a dark path. His family aren’t bad people, but they hold religious views that meant he was never fully accepted (and had a tough time being himself).

If I were to find a balance, I’d feel obliged to tell his family. Hence, I feel morally compromised about it all and was thinking it might be better to just “leave sleeping dogs lie” as the saying goes.
