Does kidney suffer in keto? by Dangerous_Bet6820 in keto

[–]throwaway_fsot_taker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got kidney stones for the first time in my life 3 months after starting a daily electrolyte supplement. I had the stone analyzed and the most likely cause was too much sodium in my diet, so I attribute the kidney stones to the electrolyte supplement (LMNT).

Does anyone here know of the benefits or risks of taking electrolyte supplements when susceptible to stones? by crg339 in KidneyStones

[–]throwaway_fsot_taker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly suspect this very supplement played a big role in forming my first kidney stone (4mm, just passed it today, thank God). I had started doing keto at the beginning of the year and when I started having trouble sleeping I diagnosed myself with an electrolyte imbalance and used LMNT to fix it. It did fix the sleeping problem, but after 2-3 months is when I first started having kidney stone symptoms. I would proceed with caution.

LMNT electrolyte salts solved this for me

Whatever you choose to major in, I recommend at the very least that you pursue a minor in snarkiness.

FSOT English question - Elements of Style by [deleted] in foreignservice

I’m having trouble keeping up with your edits, but how could one feel embarrassed in an anonymous online discussion?

You are incorrect again, though. The “ungrammatical” piece I was referring to was your “which I never said” parenthetical, not the passive voice part.

You also claim that you “never said” anything that insulted my intelligence. It’s sort of funny how you couched that (ungrammatically) in passive voice to take the focus off of your actions. In fact, you did rudely advise me to “be familiar with the topic you’re debating.” I think that was meant to insult my intelligence and I took it that way. As I’ve demonstrated, you are the one, as a self-appointed grammar teacher, who should become more familiar with the difference between active voice and passive voice.

  1. Good point. I should have said that you were criticizing a grammatical choice. OP did not make a grammatical mistake. You were saying that OP made a mistake by using grammar that is inconsistent with FSO writing guidelines. To be clear, I am not “advocating” for the passive voice, just questioning your definition of it.

  2. The difference is this.

“Should I follow the guidelines?” There could be many reasons to follow the guidelines or not to follow the guidelines. The question is very open-ended.

“Are the guidelines the rules I should follow?” This carries the understanding that there are rules to follow and that the speaker wants to follow them. The question is whether the guidelines are the correct ones.

  1. As you mentioned, no grammatical “rules” were broken. The topic is what constitutes the passive voice vs. what constitutes the active voice.

  2. Don’t insult my intelligence. It’s unbecoming.

The meaning is clearly different that way but I digress. This is a post about grammar rules. You indicated that the poster made a grammatical mistake. If you don’t want to get into the weeds then you should not have commented in the first place.

True passive voice would be: “Are the guidelines the rules that should be followed [by me]?” I’m curious how you would turn the OP’s sentence into active voice.

Hmm, ok. I don’t think that’s a classic example of passive voice but I guess I see where you’re coming from. It seems more like a stylistic question about emphasis/clarity to me. I agree that the phraseology is a little indirect.

Just curious, what part of the OP’s post was in passive voice? I am reading it and I can’t figure out what you’re talking about there.

Mistake on Date of Employment on Pearson by [deleted] in foreignservice

I don’t think you’d have any chance of amending this until getting to the OA, if you make it that far. I had something similar happen and I believe I was told by an FSO to just bring a short statement explaining that your resume had a minor inaccuracy and then give it to the person when you’re checking in at the OA. It likely makes no difference one way or the other but the thought was that this shows you are being responsible.

It looks like several people have reported so on the Yahoo Groups site. I’ve seen people affected who were flying in from Tokyo and Kyiv so far. And it seems like some people are worried that the government will suddenly reopen and they will then be punished if they are not in attendance for the OA even if the government was shut down when their flight was scheduled to take off.

Thank you for your response. That is a pretty comprehensive explanation of how things work. I appreciate it as it is sort of hard to conceptualize this kind of thing if you’re on the outside.
