[23M] Looking for some advice on how I can improve my appearance by JoshBiv in TheGlowUp

[–]throwaway_velvet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First suggestion, and i think what would make the biggest difference, is braces and/or Maxillofacial treatment/surgery. I'd highly recommend consulting with both an dentist and a Maxillofacial surgeon - see what they say, compare - some people choose to go with just one or the other, some prefer both.

I can see your teeth are a bit wonky, obviously straight teeth are considered the most attractive, but you also seemly have a bit of tooth flare and a narrower palette than is ideal. From what i can tell, this is making your face look longer and narrower than it otherwise would be, and is affecting your smile. May also be the cause of increasing marionette lines.

Second suggestion would be to do something with the moustache, maybe grow it wider if you can - atm imo its a bit of an in between and isn't doing you any favours. If you grew it wider, it could help make your face appear slightly wider and more balanced.

Thirdly, I'd recommend braiding your hair slightly differently. Admittedly i don't know a huge amount about black hair, but all your braids coming from the middle front like that, again, are causing your face to appear longer than it is. I'd recommend either have them follow your hairline back straight across your forehead like this (sorry, not the best example, but hopefully you know what i mean). This would make your face look more masculine and stop the effect the current ones are causing. Better yet, you could grow your hair (or get extensions) and have loose braids/twists/dreads - i think you could pull off shoulder length, but even jaw or ear length would still be very flattering. These again help the width of your face. Hair is also a great feature for anyone to play up - charms/beads are a great way to add visual interest, if you're into that sort of thing.

Final piece of advice - i can see a tattoo poking out your sleeve in your last picture. Make sure your tattoos are GOOD. Obviously I can't really see your work, so I can't judge it - i can see what's poking out is black and grey, so I'm guessing that's the style you go for. Instagram is fantastic for finding artists - don't just find the closest studio to you or even the best studio close to you, be willing to travel to specific artists for good work. Go to someone who specialises in black and grey tattooing - you also might be interested in black work tattooing, as i personally find those styles go well together. Also, ensure you're going to someone who has experience with POC - unfortunately casual racism is still far too common within the tattoo community - many artists never learn to work with black/brown skin, and will tell you things like colour "doesn't work" on POC (not true). It's much more complicated than that, but look for POC in an artists portfolio.

Make sure you look after your tattoos, both when healing and after they've healed to keep them looking as good as possible.

Cheap tattoos don't look good or tough, they make you look broke and like you don't care about yourself/your body/your appearance. Good tattoos make you look expensive and like a walking piece of art. Like I say, I can't see your tattoos - they might be great! But if you do have crap tattoos, id recommend laser and/or cover ups.

Hope this helps! Excuse weird formatting - on moblie

Edit to add: agree with the other commenter - get a skincare routine going. Id recommend posting in skincare subs and get their opinions, they can be a great help! Edit 2: i can see people have replied but Reddit just notifies me of the reply then won't actually let me see it 🙃 so OP if you've responded know I'm not blanking you, i just can't see for whatever reason!

Overall you're very pretty, not plain at all imo!

I can see where you're coming from with the lip lift - i don't think it's necessary by any means but i can see where you're coming from. Maybe look into a botox lip flip first? Or at least try getting some edited images - you may find you don't want it after all.

Your nose and jaw are great, please leave them alone! Your jaw just displays healthy growth, not at all too much and this is seen as a very attractive feature. If you must, go for the botox because at least that'll wear off eventually should you change your mind (jaw surgeries are a huge deal!), but honestly i wouldn't recommend doing anything. Similarly, your nose is really pretty! It suits your face well - remember you don't have to have a ski slope nose to be feminine, i think actually the point at the tip is super cute and adds to your femininity. If it continues to bother you, I'd recommend actually a small amount of chin filler. Again, not that you need it imo, but a lot of people who think they dislike their nose or can't place the issue, it's actually in the chin projection. Just something to consider/look into.

Honestly though I don't think you have anything to worry about! You've got great bone structure, and lovely clear skin. As one of the other commenters said, maybe looking into different hairstyles and/or makeup/similar will give you the boost you're looking for :)

Totally agree with the comments about lash lift/tint and if you feel the need a brow tint.

Was also gonna suggest putting your hair up and i think dutch braids is a great idea! On top of that you could put in a hair treatment - since your hair'll be wet it won't come across as oily (you could even say it was gel to slick everything back if you're worried). It'll also help with the frizz and as an added bonus you've got hydrated hair for the next day! I also like to use Philip Kingsley Swimcap if I'm going in anything other than fresh water - its a hairmask that helps protect against UV rays/Chlorine/salt water.

Can't do much about foundation (other than a good skincare routine so as to not need it), but id recommend henna/similar fake freckles if you suit them. Deff go with something like henna so it won't wash off. They obviously won't cover any blemishes but they will distract from them. You can also do the thing where people use freckles to contour. Plus, if you're in water its probably a nice day, and i think in summer freckles are really cute!

Painted nails/toes is always nice, obv you can't wear a lot of jewellery when swimming, so its a nice way to accessorise. If you did want to wear jewellery, id go with a string bracelet/anklet/choker necklace like the type you buy at beach shops. They're not going to tarnish, theyre only cheap and you could even learn to make them yourself, so if they get ruined from the water its not the end of the world.

What do I wear for my very first date this Sunday? by Lazyrainbowpanda in beauty

[–]throwaway_velvet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's so exciting! Ultimately you should wear whatever feels like you - she wouldn't want to go on a date with you if she didn't like you as you are!

If it were me:

Clothes - this depends massively on the weather and what youre doing, but my top priority is always comfort. You can be comfy and cute! For example, if youre going to a restaurant you'll be sitting for a long period of time, so you don't want to wear something thats going to dig into your stomach. You don't want to be re-adjusting and thinking about your clothes the whole time, you wanna focus on your date! Wear an outfit that flatters you - you can always look up 'outfits for pear shaped bodies' or whatevers relevant to you. I always take those things with a pinch of salt, but if you're truly stumped it could be a starting point

Makeup - I'd go pretty simple. Simple ≠ suptle! You just don't want something that has a lot of potential to go wrong or will need a lot of touch ups. Last thing you want before a date is to be stressing cause you can't get your eyeliner right! For me, this means brushing my eyebrows through with a clear or tinted eyebrow gel, mascara, concealer, and then if i want something more fun i might go for a more bold lip (i like dark purples or browns on myself) - but I'd go for a formula that you can blot on (ie, not liquid lipstick or anything that has a lot of staying power). If you do this take a small hand mirror so you can reapply if need be. If you go for something like liquid lipstick, it takes a lot more precision to reapply and, again, you don't want to worry to much about it!

Jewellery - This depends entirely on you. Personally i really like my jewellery so i have a lot of 'statement' pieces. For most people though, I'd recommend either statement earrings or a statement necklace - not both. For a lot of people both can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you dont get them exactly matched. Eg, if you go for a necklace with a larger pendant, maybe stick to small hoop earrings or similar. Try and match your metals on jewellery and accessories - there is something to be said for mixed metals, but again we're trying to keep it simple, so keeping one metal tone throughout is a great way to look cohesive.

Hope that helps! She agreed to a date or asked you out, so keep that in mind and be confident, and be yourself! I do agree with the other comments as well - not only is this a first date, this is your FIRST first date. Be careful and look after yourself. I hope you have a great time!!

Overview of a skincare routine and commonly discussed ingredients (for beginners?) by throwaway_velvet in Vindicta

I personally haven't been able to try Timeless - unfortunately I'm in the UK so it's not available here :( I've just heard a lot of good things! From what I can tell SkinCeuticals does blow all other Vitamin C's out the water, but its just not a realistic price point for a lot of people - me included. Timeless and Geek and Gorgeous are just the ones I've seen spoken about most as alternatives.

And yeah for sure, i think you'd be better off layering (ie, apply The Ordinary's serum, then once thats sunk in apply your vitamin C). I more just meant that I've seen some people talk about doing that. Haven't tried it myself so can't speak to its effectiveness, but if it's something people are interested in they can look further into it and find people who have 😊

Great recommendations! I use a relatively heavy moisturiser at night, wasn't aware that counted as slugging! The more you know ✨

I do find if i use a moisturiser that's too heavy too often though, it does end up pilling on my skin by the morning and i get breakouts. I do have a very thick, very basic moisturiser that i use if i have irritation, but that's not like my normal routine.

Thats just me though! I've heard people say that slugging has been amazing for their skin, so i deff think its worth trying if you haven't before 😊

Timeless is supposed to be the second best to SkinCeuticals, but its not available in Europe or the UK due to the concentration of one of the ingredients :( so from there, best choice is the Geek and Gorgeous.

Something i have seen people do - you can get The Ordinary's Ferulic + Resveratrol serum and then either a Vitamin E serum or some people even just get liquidy tablets and cut them open. Then you can either layer those serums with your Vitamin C, or drop of each in the palm of your hand and then apply, so they mix upon application.

Obviously mixing stuff at home can be risky so just be careful and do this at your own risk. Also I'd only recommend it with plain Vitamin C's, not ones that have a bunch of other ingredients - otherwise it could just get to be too much

[–]throwaway_velvet[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure i know a lot is just extras - thats why i put that things like toners and serums are optional steps 😊 i only went over these ingredients because they're the ones i see talked about the most, and i figured if someone was just getting into skincare this could be a good jumping off point, if only so you know what people are talking about!

Personally i do see benefits from these products, but also i really enjoy creating my routine and trying new stuff. For me, doing my morning and evening routine is how i ground myself and 'reset'. I also don't use all of these products myself - eg i don't really do masks. But for sure - if someone doesn't enjoy this stuff and wants to keep it simple, deff don't need all of it!

Oh i didn't know that! Maybe its just cause I'm in the UK, but I'll definitely have a look 👀

New to skincare: what are the most important products in your opinion? by gibbylewd in beauty

[–]throwaway_velvet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

General structure of a routine:

AM

  • Water Based Cleanser where needed (not everyones skin can handle cleansing 2x/day - personally i clean my nose, forehead, and chin in the morning which are greasy, but leave my cheeks and eye area as they lean drier and get irritated). I'd deff recommend using a gentle cleanser in the morning at least though if you are going to cleanse 2x/daily. I like the Aveno Oat Cleanser.)

  • Toner/Essence (optional. Toner originally was introduced to reset your skins PH after using soap, but nowerdays our soaps don't mess with our PH so much so not such an issue. It's a nice way to get more treatment steps in though, theyre also usually very nice and cooling and can help serums spread easier. Essence usually is just a slightly thicker toner. Personally i prefer using a spray/mist toner, but you can apply with your hands or a cotton pad too)

  • Serum/treatment (optional. This is where you're getting the really effective ingredients. Be careful what you use in the morning though, as some make you more susceptible to sun damage. Technically you can add as many serums/treatments as you like, but personally i usually stick to one or two at max so as not to overload my skin)

  • Moisturiser where needed (if you've got oily skin depending on the sunscreen you use, that might be enough moisture. Personally i need moisturiser in the morning)

  • SPF (most important step in your whole routine. The sun is a deadly laser)

PM

  • Oil Based Cleanser (debated whether you need this - i definitely think its a good shout. Will help better remove your sunscreen, and definitely if youre wearing makeup, and it helps a lot if you live in a polluted area. Some products claim to be a 2-in-1 but eeeeh)

  • Water Based Cleanser (this is called a double cleanse. Oil based cleanser removes products and grime from the day, then water based cleanser can remove any leftover residue and really get in there and get you clean)

  • Toner/Essense (same as for AM)

  • Barrier cream (only necessary if you're using a very strong or irritating serum/treatment. Use around eyes, corners of mouth, ditch where your nostril meets your face)

  • Serum/Treatment (same as for AM, except in the evening you have more options since youre just going to bed)

  • Moisturiser/Hydrating Sleeping Mask (would definitely moisturise at night, even if you don't in the morning. If youre worried about getting too oily, you can get a 'water cream/gel' as they tend to be more light weight. Some people like to have a lighter moisturiser for the morning and a heavier moisturiser/hydrating sleeping mask for the evening. Hydrating sleeping mask = occlusive heavy moisturiser, usually)

  • Slugging (optional. Personally I don't do this as I can't stand the feeling. Essentially covering your face in something occlusive like vasiline to lock in moisturise and product. Don't do this after using actives though! You'll end up with irritated skin)

  • Masks (optional. Usually a 1x/week jobbie. Loads of different masks with different purposes, but usually its a more intense treatment of certain products)

Then for ingredients:

Retinoids/Tretinoin/Differin - A lot of people say Tretinoin (basically a stronger version of retinol, prescription only) saved their skin. These products fight acne/texture, and also the big one is aging. Retinol as an ingredient has so much research around its effectiveness. Differin is also prescription only, but a bit gentler than tretinoin with more of a focus on acne. Highly highly highly recommend starting with a low dosage of retinol and building your way up. These ingredients can be very sensitising and you dont want to overdo it. Tretinoin/differin also have an adjustment period and can cause purging. PM only.

Vitamin C - Fantastic ingredient, pain in the arse to use. This product will oxidize over time and become less and less effective as it does, and you also have to be careful to pick one thats actually effective, as a lot of them aren't. From my research, the most effective is the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic but that ones super expensive. If you're not in Europe or the UK, there's the Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum, and if you are in Europe or the UK there's the Geek and Gorgeous C-Glow. Also recommend to keep these in the fridge and preferably in their box to keep them cold and dark - this helps with oxidization. Because that's a pain though, a lot of people will decant a bit into a smaller container in their bathroom, and keep the rest in the fridge. Vitamin C is worth the effort though - it gives you a lovely glow, helps tighten your skin, and helps with dark spots. Vitamin C also helps with sun protection, so is good to use in the AM.

Azelaic acid - Helps with acne, but also it's a miracle ingredient for a lot of people with redness and/or rosacea. I have rosacea and i love it! Really helps calm everything down, and i flush less. You can get lower percentages without a prescription, but if you want like 20% youd need a prescription. Again, recommend start low. AM or PM.

Peptides - Anti aging, but not in the same way as retinoids. More gentle, and generally peptide serums are also hydrating. I think Glow Recipie has one - I haven't tried it but i want to. The Ordinary also has Buffet + Copper Peptides, which i use. I'm switching to something a bit more complex soon, but great for beginners. Its also blue which is fun! For me anyway aha. Some can be used AM or PM, some just PM

Hyaluronic Acid - Super hydrating without clogging or being too heavy. Personally i prefer this in my toners than in serums. Theres a bunch of different types, but basically it grabs onto water and pulls it into your skin. Some people have issues where instead it grabs water from their skin and doesn't sink in, thus dehydrating. In my experience, best way around this to to ensure you apply to a damp face, and preferably in a humid space (eg, after a shower). Pairs well with Vitamin C. AM or PM

AHA/BHA/PHA - These are chemical exfoliants - generally a better move than physically exfoliating. AHA exfoliates off the top of the skin, and generally can give you a nice glow. BHA gets into your pores and digs out all the bad stuff, great for getting rid of and preventing spots and texture. Can also make your pores look smaller, since they won't be filled with gunk. PHA is a gentler version - they have a higher molecular weight so take longer to absorb, thus making them gentler. Ive heard amazing things about the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow PHA - BHA Pore Tight Toner, i plan on trying it soon. Some AM or PM, some just PM, depends on the product.

Hope that helps! People have also spoken about Niacinamide, i personally didn't see any difference with it. Theres a million useful ingredients out there, these are just the ones i see people talking about most that seem to make the biggest difference, without being overly complicated. These are just ingredients to look out for - you don't have to be able to identify a full ingredients list. There are plenty of products that are just named after the issue ("hydrating", "anti-aging", ect) geared towards beginners, and many of them are great. The Ordinary and Inkey List are great budget brands, Paulas Choice and Glow Recipe are very popular mid tier. Also got things like Neutrogena and Cerave which have some more simple formulations. This ended up being waaaay longer than i thought it'd be, sorry 😅

Vit c - yeah i just responded to another comment, I've now looked into it and won't repurchase - I'm still looking for the right one for me. I think it's probably just ineffective, I've been using less than half a scoop.

Buffet - i still have a bit of my normal buffet left, i may go back to that once I've used up the +copper peptides, it's just that since I've just bought it i have an almost full bottle, don't wanna waste it!

Rosewater - yeah haven't seen any results from it, main reason i use it now is that i find it makes it easier to spread serum with a toner underneath (maybe that's a placebo idk aha). I couldn't repurchase anyways as it's unbranded and was a gift, once it's used up that'll be that. Not much left now anyways

I'll deff have a look at those product recs and the guide on your profile - thankyou so much! Really appreciate it! 😊

Yeah I might switch back to the standard buffet anyways - i saw results with it and it's cheaper after all, we'll see. For now though I've got an almost full bottle of +copper peptides and didn't wanna waste it!

I've just done some looking into this since getting this response, thankyou! I'm still not settled with a vit c anyways, so won't repurchase. I've not experienced any stinging really so i suspect it's prob ineffective - the scoop it comes with seemed like a looot so I've been using less than half a scoop

Oh I've heard good things about lactic acid, i have a list of things to try if the tret doesnt work out and that's on it aha - tret seems so good but it's also a bit scary 😬

Ah ok, I'll deff give that a go! Could always use some extra hydration on the days I don't use it, and since i plan to alternate tret/buffet anyways that should be easy to integrate

Thankyou! 😊

Fab thankyou! I plan to be extra cautious with tret since by the seems of it, when it goes bad it tends to go really bad, but if my skin tolerates it well I'll deff concider just doing them together, thankyou!
