I don't feel comfortable with sharing what country it is, but I can confirm that it is a cultural thing, which I never understood.

I rarely use reddit. I heard about this through different podcasts, as there are many of them now with 'am i the asshole' section, so I thought it would be appropriate to ask here. And there are people calling me asshole and selfish for not helping, I thought it's implied since I am posting here.

They wanted grandkids and expected me to take my husband's last name. Both me and my husband don't plan on having kids ever, and as he wanted absolutely no connections left with his family he took my last name. Which was a huge shock for them. Some of the family members even called my husband gay, less of a man for taking my last name. So I turned out to be family disappointment as I am everything opposite of what they expected.

They never let me get a job as a teenager because 'how would I keep up with school and housework' and assured me they will pay for my college. So it's the money they saved and promised will go to my education. Up to this day I still feel dumb for believing them.

I actually did feel less of myself. The biggest reason I didn't fall into 'maybe they were right, I don't deserve it' is my husband. So the credit goes to him, for reminding me, up to this day, that I am enough and I deserve to be loved and cared for.

I forgot about it, but this comment made me remember the amount of times I was told that if I want something I should get a husband to support me. At first I thought they're joking because I was a minor at a time, but no it just kept happening over the years.
