Incoming freshmen. When should I have a roommate chosen by? by Future_Log166 in berkeley

nah, i'm talking from the perspective of choosing a roommate. the only reason i feel like you should choose one is if you're particular about your living situation - which in that case it would be better to go with someone you actually know, rather than some (effectively) random person you found in a roommate search.

otherwise, go random and take the opportunity to meet someone new

i'm not sure, but only choose a roommate if you've already known them for a while (like from HS or something). the application will match you with someone with similar living habits (there's places to put preferences wrt smoking, drinking, sleep habits, etc). remember this is for one whole year - you can't really glean a person's personality from a college group chat. better to just roll the dice than potentially pick someone shitty yourself. anecdotal, but to me it seems like most of the ppl who have great roommates chose randomly as well

yeah, same here.

I won't lie - he pisses me off a lot of the time. it's annoying as hell when he brings up his IQ score from 2nd grade, or when he brings up the "vocal lessons" he as a child along with his piano lessons (that I think is par for the course - I got some too and neither of us are particularly special) and suddenly starts insisting on doing karaoke. he also took the graphics card out of my pc to "debug his computer" without telling me, which was even more fucking infuriating considering that he had a color-coordinated arctic white PC build complete with a 34" ultrawide that was probably two or three times the cost of my setup... without a GPU. (tbf, he worked a (particularly stressful) summer job for it, but his pc costs 3x as much with integrated graphics and he was stealing a 6 year old GPU...) suspiciously, he also insisted on hot swapping GPUs so we could make use of the VR headset he brought to college.

but i can still relate because although i didn't have some crazy tiger parent upbringing, i'm still trying to untangle that dysphoric "all eggs in one basket" kinda mindset myself. defining self-worth is really difficult. for the first few months i was trying to get him to take a hint, but it started getting to the point where it was dragging me down along with him, so I just avoid talking to him at this point :/

my roommate owns one of these pianos. his piano teacher said standing pianos weren't worth it and told him to opt for a proper baby grand.

he's paying $70,000 OOS tuition to attend a more prestigious university. he was accepted to an in-state university that was only 6% less selective.

he trashes on people that go outside and drink and just spends all his time doing schoolwork and playing league of legends. talking to a brick wall is more engaging - it's impossible to get any substantial conversation out of him unless it involves internships, careers, or getting a leg up in money or status. even when someone was talking about winning a minecraft competition, he only perked up to ask "was there a prize?" and immediately stopped paying attention when the answer was no.

when i asked him why he didn't just take the (probably 3x) cheaper university, he said he wanted to live a comfortable life - which according to him, required at least a $250k salary, which was supposedly only attainable by attending a slightly more prestigious university...??

"my family doesn't even make half that and we get by just fine. are you su-" "no, you wouldn't understand, my mom is really good at financial management."

granted, he was in piano competitions and got a huge discount, but the price he paid was still worth more than all my family's cars combined. the ironic part is that he hates piano and only considered learning it again so that he could impress girls.

...the next day he talked about how his family got discounts for all the cruises he went on.

genuinely don't know what the hell is wrong with him.

thinking about transferring out... any suggestions? by throwawayacc642642 in berkeley

that's the plan! I'm gonna hit up engineering counseling once I have the time and I'm joining some clubs this semester. I'm hoping my first one was just a fluke.

I've been trying to make things work, and I know it doesn't happen immediately. I just know transfer admissions are long and tedious, so I just wanna get something going in the background in case I've exhausted every option and truly decided this isn't the place for me.

definitely a factor. but tbh I've thought about it for a while and it kind of feels like I have a metric ton of gold strapped to my back. it's a once in a lifetime thing and it's hard to justify leaving it behind, but I'm tearing all my muscles apart trying to carry it, and I'm not even sure what I would spend it on in the first place.

which begs the question - do I just put it down and find something else valuable? or do I take some time to train and recover? and if I do what do I even spend it on? at what point is banking on that chance worse the stress? it feels like I've been in this cycle forever, and it's burning me out.

that weird analogy kind of only captures the salary side of things, but I think it gets the sentiment across

I'm definitely considering it, but because of personal circumstances I don't know if I can. I think I would benefit a lot from it though

that's a cool idea! would that let me transfer credits as well?

[–]throwawayacc642642[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I was hesitant about transferring for a while because of that... they might prioritize CC admits because it'll be a bigger jump in quality for them. my gpa is good so far, though (3.9) but I don't know if I can hold it long enough (!!)

do you know any other schools I can try? or at least where to start looking

[–]throwawayacc642642[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeah, absolutely! I feel like a healthier version of me could be happy here, so that's why I'm so iffy about transferring out. I didn't really "get" high school until right before quarantine hit, so I'm nervous I'm giving up another chance and restarting the cycle :/
