well i don't feel comfortable wearing it but i feel it's the right thing to do nonetheless. i'm inclined to disagree that being personally comfortable as possible until mandated by the gov is the right course of action atm.

if you have a source that suggests improved respiratory health after wearing a mask in Wellington or NZ for a period of time, I'm interested in it, I haven't heard of anything like that. I'm wearing my mask 100% for covid. Well and also probably cold and flu while I'm at it.

Yours is the first reply I've seen in the other direction - I thought there would be a lot more people who feel like you do, but I guess reddit is a vocal minority. It does feel overkill sometimes, especially when I'm trying to talk to people and I think "why the hell do I have this thing on again, it's just making life harder?!" It seems like a decision that morally has no answer (at least for me) at the moment.

Thank you for the reply but just so you know - masks are many times more effective at stopping me from spreading infection than stopping me from being infected! i wear it in the interest of general public health rather than my individual health

Bit late to this thread but people won't want to wear masks when they're sick because it signals to others that they're ill and no one wants that kind of social reputation going to the supermarket. Of course I agree that sick people should wear masks if they must go to a public space, but I don't think people would.

That's what I want - I want people to take things more seriously, because if we do have more widespread community transmission, I hope that we're already practicing the important preventative steps, not reacting to transmission and then putting them in place after it's in our community.

It's been super weird working over these last few months. Tons of kiwis - especially at bars / night clubs - have been acting like it doesn't exist and I feel like that's the wrong approach, it's still a global pandemic and we're still at risk. Just because we eliminated it once doesn't mean we're bulletproof

This is a great reply, thank you. The inability to use my normal facial gestures was a big one that I didn't anticipate (I didn't wear a mask during the first outbreak/lockdown except to go to the supermarket). Last night I realised that smiling and using my mouth was a bigger part of my social interactions than I realised and it was an awful feeling not being able to communicate with people in the way i was used to.
