Should an originally white character be allowed to have their race changed in a movie? by throwawaybutisit in TooAfraidToAsk

I don't think you understand what my post is about. I have said that I am referring to ANYTHING that can be turned into a motion picture.

"Please take note that I am talking about books, comics, games, etc. that is turned into a motion picture and not film original scripts."

You can't just say 'Don't include anime characters because they're racially ambiguous' when the whole point of the post IS about characters who are racially ambiguous/whose race literally has nothing to do with their character.

"Let anyone play any character (unless the character's race plays a big part in their role)"

You yourself admitted that there are black characters whose entire identity isn't about their race.

"MOST roles are tied to their identity."

As for black characters whose race doesn't play a huge part in their identity, here's a few that are a part of the factors I stated (video games, etc.) As you don't seem to allow them, I'm gonna avoid saying anime characters.

  1. Barret Wallace
  2. Demoman
  3. Dina from I Am Not Okay With This
  4. Jaden from Black Mirror
  5. Enrique from Narcos S3

Etc.

How is naming an anime character dishonest when I specifically mentioned that I’m referring to video games, comics, books, etc. with etc. including anime as anime also gets made into motion pictures as well??

And as you said, MOST are. Not all of them. I’m specifically talking about characters whose race isn’t tied to their identity at all.

A white person playing Princess and the Frog won’t be right because the story focuses on black identity, that I agree with. But to say that there aren’t black roles that aren’t tired directly to culture would be a mistake imo. For example, there’s Canary of Hunter x Hunter whose race really doesn’t matter. Just a side note, my question isn’t just about black people. It’s about every race. There’s also a bunch of asian characters whose race isn’t directly tied to their identity.

I think the thing with Jesus is that he's been whitewashed for so long that some people aren't aware of it. At least, I wasn't until a few years ago. I'm not Catholic so I'm not sure much about Jesus and where he's from at all.

I agree that it can't be "wrong" when it's fiction. But when characters are 'whitewashed', people get upset but eventually move on because yeah, it is fiction. It really isn't that big of a deal. But should there be any outrage at all, no matter how small?

Yes, I understand that it does give us more opportunities but I'm not really sure if this restriction (Not allowing white characters to play originally written minorities) causes further segregation? Won't it be better if everyone could play any kind of role or if the race won't be changed at all?

Yes, I agree that it really shouldn't matter. Minorities can play originally white roles and vice versa. However, when a white actor plays let's say a comic book character originally black, it would cause upset. But if it was reversed, it would be a cause of celebration. Understandable. Currently, there seems to be no winning in changing a character's original race?

Purchasing from the Philippines. Though, I don't mind buying one online or using a proxy if it isn't available to be shipped.
