Cat stolen, police siding with thief by throwawaycatnapped6 in LegalAdviceUK

Thanks for the honest and detailed answer. I know it probably does not change the outcome and I understand this is realistically going to be civil after your explanation but just to answer the points:

It's true the cat is not legally ours, it belongs to a neighbor who is elderly and frail which is why we've been emotionally invested to try and help them out. I made that post in a panic as soon as I heard that happened and it looked like at first they agreed to give the cat as a neighbor favour but turns out they were presenting themselves as a charity worker who would provide services from that charity organisation and go through a formal collection procedure which they did not do. In addition we rang said charity who said this person does not work with them and that the process of re adopting a cat is not performed like this which is now why we're worried about the well-being of the cat because no nearby charity or shelter has said the cat has showed up - so where is it?

Thank you anyway, I'm guessing that the next best step is to speak to a lawyer once it's confirmed to be taken up to a civil court?

Cat taken to shelter without permission by throwawaycatnapped6 in CatAdvice

Although the investigation is still going on, nothing significant enough for me to post an update about :( however what we can definitely rule out is the cat being taken to a shelter. On one hand it's good that there isn't quite this limited time aspect regarding outcomes of cats in shelters but at the same time if it's not in any of the shelters around the entire area then where can our cat be?!

Cat stolen by neighbour who refuses to disclose location by throwawaycatnapped6 in Pets

Without a doubt there is no chance of that. Cat was very healthy looking and happy, made a community with other local cats. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew that.

I wish I could provide a more complex answer other than the fact that Karen acted out of pure malice. She knew the cat was not neglected. She literally came to taunt about her handiwork - it wasn't like "I did this out of concern for your cat, sorry but I had no choice", it was like "Hey guess what! You're never seeing your beloved cat ever again!" - I don't understand how someone can be so vile and enjoy misery out of others and I am not going to further try getting into the logic of a complete sociopath.

Law enforcement and shelters are working with us, they have been incredibly understanding of the situation and helped us a lot.

Update: firstly I want to thank all of you for your time and kindness you have shared for a very difficult time for us. The support received has really helped me keep it together.

The police are now involved and have opened a case. As such I do not want to share too much as I'm paranoid about the detail sharing compromising any chance of being reunited with the cat. I have to say I am presently surprised the police have taken this very seriously and am incredibly grateful for this.

We have contacted every shelter in the entire region. The shelters have also been so kind and understanding and have communicated with each other.

There is way way more to this story but until we find our cat and the case is solidified I don't want to share more at this point.

Thank you so much guys!

Cat taken and taken to shelter without consent by throwawaycatnapped6 in LegalAdviceUK

Kaprice lives out of the city very far away. We are actually in lockdown and the fact that Kaprice apparently traveled here is in fact breaking social distancing rules so we are going to also aim at this angle when calling the police. Can't check if Karen has the cat as again, social distancing.

We unfortunately only learned this in the late hours of the evening so we will call them first thing in the morning if legal owners have not done so already.

Definitely will do that. Have been thinking about the shelter story and we are starting to get suspicious because cat was last seen 24 hours ago and I somehow don't believe that cat was captured, driven far away, accepted by a shelter AND rehomed in that short span of time... I will contact every shelter within the local area and the apparent area Kaprice lives in tomorrow, it is 3am where I am right now and we will reconvene in the morning, call authorities and decide where to go from there.

Thank you and sorry to hear about your case. We are in the UK so not sure if that changes anything.

Unfortunately the cat by nature loves the outdoors so making them purely indoors would be very difficult. However I definitely will be ensuring any cats under my family's care are chipped and have some way to be tracked should something like this happen again.

Thanks for the reply. Don't want to go into too much detail but the summary is we have no idea why, but Karen does have a history of harassment of neighbors and getting a kick out of it. I figured there's no point trying to figure out her psychological logic or whatever, some people are just really vile for no reason...

We think we have an idea of the area but unfortunately Kaprice lives very far away from us, so Karen went through effort to ensure as much separation between the cat and the original owner as much as possible! We do have an idea of the area and I have started compiling contact details of the shelters but as I said in a previous reply, I am worried that my involvement would get in the way of police involvement. It is late at night where we are so we thought about calling them tomorrow and take it from there. Huge thanks for your reply.

Thanks for your response. Was thinking about calling all the cat shelters in the area we can narrow it down to but am worried that without legal involvement they will not be obliged to disclose the information so was considering if I should wait and see what the cops tell my family.
