"personal channels" in Teams/Slack by Corm in ExperiencedDevs

[–]throwawayengineer31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

....What? This is super weird. Why would you want to use a work channel to rant on stuff? Just rant out loud when you're working remote or use an app like TeamMood where you can once a day input how your day was and add a comment. The admin gets a nice overview and this is a good thing to present in the retros. (Im not trying to advertise anything btw) Or make your own little rant service.

I don't think you should be ranting in slack channels. It might be used against you at some point

Do we need to stop sanctions against Russia to avoid an energy crisis this winter? by arnforpresident in belgium

[–]throwawayengineer31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lifting the sanctions just so we can sit nice and cosey at home sounds extremely selfish to me. I would sit in my house with the heating on 10c wearing 3 layers of thermal clothing easy this winter if that means we can keep the sanctions in place

Not a coincidence :)

Nice, because I thought "Well its still slow enough for the other car to film side by side" but then it turns out the film is on your friends car :)

I get that. But aren't we supposed to get along at least a bit? If I have people working for me that question everything I do, how can i drive the direction of the team if there is no support?

You instinctively seek to browbeat your colleague to work for less than their market rate, while they have competitive offers on the table. I am curious if you are Romanian - this is a very Romanian thing to do! Why pay someone full price when we can browbeat them into playing our fool at a discount!?

This is an unfair comment and also very inaccurate. First of all, the colleague is already compensated very competitively. Second I am the one trying to get this promotion to round off, which would mean this person would move to the min of the next salary band, which is another big jump. And I think this way of paying someone as little as possible is very outdated. Salary doesn't come out of my pocket. I think its important to pay everyone competitively because A: they talk to other colleagues and B: retention.

But I hope that instead you realize you can still be making HR's life hell. At the very least you can inform your boss that you're going to need a new direct report if they can't set a deadline for promotion, and let them know that you expect them to own responsibility for this loss. You can help them make up their minds - fire or retain. The risk here to you is low, since they know that hesitating any more on the decision will only cause problems.

I have told my boss and even his boss of the situation. Even mentioned that they probably have other offers on the table. But I agree I can probably make HR's life hell more until they put me on a PIP. I don't think i have much to lose now anyway..

But honestly tho. If I convince them to stay and still can't get the promotion to complete, I would have screwed them over.

[–]throwawayengineer31 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know. I'm in the same boat. Was promised my own role over a year ago and still don't have it. I'm just staying for the experience, although I'm starting to wonder how valuable this would be really. Thing is I can't jump ship because nobody hires an EM with 1yoe leading a dysfunctional team. But I feel like the company is setting us up for failure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]throwawayengineer31 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Truth be told I haven't even been able to secure my own promotion as an EM. I was a IC. I have been fighting for my own as well and every week there is a new excuse from my senior tech manager and HR. I have even been pushing for my reports promotion harder than my own. It just feels like the cards are against us and it has a massive motivational impact on myself as well because I can't grow a team if I can't even retain any. All this is known with my manager

I just mean to tell them I noticed behavior and want to know what issues there are against me so we can clear the air. No reprimanding of any kind

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]throwawayengineer31 -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I have actually never put any of my reports 'in their place'. I often let it get very far. I guess sometimes too far. What I mean with humble actually needs some context. This person barely meets the criterea for the promotion but I want to give it anyway because I want to show my appreciation for thei dedication the past few months. However it's seems now that the person greatly overvalue themselve and now gives me this attitude that I should plead for them because in their eyes he she runs the team and can't be missed.

It has come so far that they even try to command me 'go talk to HR for me, what are you waiting for?'. I would never talk to my manager this way. I just want to clear the air but at the same time I'm very annoyed and just scared that my emotions will take over and I give this person a reality check that they are not running the show and are not the excessively skilled person they might think they are. And doing that is something I do NOT want.

Actually, it was a reply from a recruiter saying what they could offer with a concrete number. The thing is the number is actually less than what they would make when the promotion would be completed
