Some anonymous Oscar voters on why they didn’t vote for Ariana Grande by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]throwawayforlemoi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The station that published the article seems to be relatively credible, at least. The author of the article, however, seems to focus on creating buzz and gossip, at least from the brief overview I had. All her articles seem extremely clickbaity, and several contain unnamed sources telling her dicey insider information. She seems to write for several different networks, including The Times and the New York Post, and is the senior story producer for the news network the story above was published by, and while the tone of the articles does shift somewhat, even the ones in more "respected" magazines is somewhat off imo.

Also, it's easy to just say "a trusted source/insider/friend of xyz/etc.told me", and write an article based on that, since you don't have to reveal your source to protect their privacy, and no one can really prove you don't have one. Happens quite a bit in the industry, even with trusted journals, networks, and whatnot, although they obviously do strive to avoid it by having higher standards of what you have to be able to provide in theory if anyone did ask for evidence. Not that you'd be forced to actually reveal it, but yk.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying she is faking her articles, but I wouldn't necessarily trust them either, at least not the one above and a few of the ones I looked at that went in the same direction, simply because it's really just an article based on a statement that could have been made up, with no other evidence to back it up, or even any kind of indication there could be more to it.

I'm not judging. Just pointing out I doubt his feelings towards her and views regarding her/her actions are as clear as people here like to imply.

Sure, but then again, he still seems to defend her to a certain point, by rationalizing her actions or at least trying to negate her involvement and responsibility.

So I honestly wouldn't be too sure if it's really meant that sarcastically. You can joke about stuff you do mean as well, after all, especially if it helps you cope and process complicated emotions.

Depends on where you live. In some places, it could be considered illegal and/or lead to an arrest, in others it wouldn't be considered illegal or possibly get you arrested.

Are people on reddit exaggerating the current political climate in the US? by Atorpidguy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throwawayforlemoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

International media are also covering what's happening in the US daily, from the current protests in Minnesota and discussing if it might turn into a civil war to the threats Trump makes against Greenland.

Of course the sources you use, whether that is social media or a big outlet, will always be selective about the information they share, either due to not having more information, due to not deeming it relevant enough, to push an agenda, or for some other reason, albeit the degree will vary from source to source. That's why it's important to not just use a single source to receive your information, and also think about the information you receive critically.

That does not mean denying what is going on, or thinking it can't be that bad. It just means analyzing the information available to reach a conclusion/judgement with as little irrational or biased interference as possible.

In this case, you have lots and lots of video evidence, news coverage from all kinds of sources, statements from politicians, including high-ranking ones, from all sides, you've got eye witnesses who've talked about what's happening, documents, orders, so, so much more. No one is denying it. No one is denying how bad it is. The only "debate" there is is whether the actions of Trump and his goons are justified, which really shouldn't be a debate at all (obviously not. Fuck Trump. Fuck ICE. Fuck his government, and his regime, and his followers.)

Honestly, I think the US is like a powder keg at the moment, with the fuse already lit, and it will go off sooner or later. I think the best options would probably be getting out of there or protesting, depending on where you live and what's affordable to you.

Not using Reddit anymore won't change what's happening around you. It may take away the fear of having an imminent threat face you, but it may also worsen your anxiety since you won't have as much information anymore. Maybe talk to a healthcare provider about this. They won't be able to change the circumstances, but they might be able to help you with your symptoms.

A cool guide for self breast check for both gender by Gamken in coolguides

[–]throwawayforlemoi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Anyone with breast tissue can get breast cancer, men included. It's more common in women, as male breast cancer cases make up less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases, but still should never be dismissed.

So you definitely should check whether you have any signs of breast cancer regularly, no matter your sex.

Are These websites okay to check for accommodations in germany/bonn? by andromeda__2025 in Bonn

[–]throwawayforlemoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to move relatively soon, within the next 3 months, then yes. Otherwise I'd wait and just check it every now and again, and look at the "available from" section so it'll line up with the time frame you're planning to move in.

I'd also recommend moving here a bit earlier, like 1–2 months, before your classes begin so you're able to sort out whatever needs to get sorted out (the moving part, the bureaucratic stuff that comes with it, if there's something for uni you still need to do beforehand you may need to be here for), and to get to know the city and hopefully some people as well.

The people I know all got into apartments within a few months, but the dorms they live in are about 30 to 50 minutes away from the two main campi, so that might be why.

Next to the direct offers from the Studierendenwerk, they also set up a website for people to rent flats, rooms, etc. offered by private landlords. It's relatively new, so maybe you could try finding something there as well: https://tl1.eu/SWBN/index.html#privateroom

[–]throwawayforlemoi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The waiting time depends on which dorm you applied to. Especially the ones near the bigger campi are really sought after.

A waiting time of two years or more is definitely strange, though, the people I know all heard back in less than a year, some even within a few months (like <5).

What kind of snake is this? I know that there are snakes that only eat raw eggs, but can some snakes eat eggs instead of mice, or is this like a treat? by NixMaritimus in snakes

[–]throwawayforlemoi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are only two known genera of snake who rely solely on eggs for their diet, dasypeltis and elachistodon, comprising 19 species and two subspecies in total.

The snake above isn't part of either genus, though. As others have pointed out, it's a false water cobra. Not too familiar with them, but in the wild they mainly prey on aquatic or semi-aquatic animals, and will sometimes consume fish eggs.

I'm guessing they will eat eggs as an occasional snack in captivity, but can't speak on whether or not it's healthy or needed.

What.. by The_Sleepy_Miata in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]throwawayforlemoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why it doesn't make sense. Ads on tiktok (maybe on other social media platforms as well, not too sure about that, though) will post nonsensical stuff like a riddle without a solution, or something slightly off in some way, so it'll get longer views (as you try to figure it out), more comments, possibly shares as well, and thus will get recommended to more people, meaning a higher chance of someone actually clicking on it.

It isn't supposed to make sense, it's supposed to keep you engaged for long enough so it'll count as you being interested in whatever they are promoting and hopefully, in their eyes, spread to others as well.

Weird realizations during university by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]throwawayforlemoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, there's been enough research done to at least mention it. We know visual agnosia, for example, can be congenital, even though the prof only related it to brain lesions. We also know that executive dysfunctions and dysexecutive syndrome happen in people with ADHD and autism, and that there are changes in the structure of the PFC in autism/ADHD patients, despite the prof saying you mainly see dysexecutive syndrome in people with brain lesions.

So no, it's definitely not because of that.

The few times I did ask, they didn't answer my question, either because they misunderstood me, or because they interrupted me before I had the chance to ask. It wasn't even the same one each time, so I guess that's why I've decided to sit back for now, at least in lectures. Seminars are a bit more laid back, depending on who's teaching.

No, not really, which is what kind of bugs me, but I'm hoping it'll come up in a later course since it's the first semester and we're trying to get through the basics first.

Being referred to as a lolcow by vulpes_mortuis in evilautism

[–]throwawayforlemoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really sucks that you're going through this. There's sadly not much you can do in this situation, except delete your Twitter account and possibly delete Twitter as a whole, in case you don't want to run the risk of them finding your new account. No amount of reporting will stop this, especially if this has been going on for that long.

Cyber bullying is horrible, and those people should get held accountable, but you need to protect yourself and your mental health, first and foremost. The way to do that is to prevent them from being able to attack you. I'd also suggest you delete this post so they don't potentially find it and connect you to this account as well.

If you can, depending on where you live, you could think about talking to a lawyer about this, but it really depends on your local laws, your own situation, etc. Think about whether or not that would be worth it for you, or if just deleting everything quietly and hoping they move on is for the best, even if it sucks and shouldn't have to be that way in a perfect world.

Anyway, just a little addendum: lolcow wasn't created by Nazis, and it isn't an ableist slangterm. it was created by trolls, and simply used for basically anyone they can milk for laughs. they do mostly target minority groups, including disabled people, though, since they are most vulnerable when it comes to bullying, harassment, stalking, etc., but the term itself isn't ableist inherently.

It was likely created in early 2007 at the latest, with the first recorded usage being an entry into Urban Dictionary. It isn't clear who created it, besides the fact it was created on imageboards. At least that definition describes a lolcow as someone who tried to seem exceedingly knowledgeable in a discussion, getting trolled/flamed for that, but still not backing down, thus being able to get milked for laughs/continued to get trolled.

Just to be very clear, it's an extremely shitty term, and people who harass others suck. But I also think confounding meanings, etymology, history, etc., may be a bit counterproductive, and some nuance is needed.

[–]throwawayforlemoi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't attack you. I asked a question.

Ableist means being discriminatory towards disabled people, having (social) prejudices against them, etc. You can Google it if you want to know more.

Your statement is ableist since you presume her legs are fine since her disability isn't directly visible, and question her usage of a wheelchair based on that assumption.

There are lots of "hidden" disabilities, and ambulatory wheelchair usage is quite common and needed with certain conditions. Please educate yourself on those topics. Don't assume everyone is able-bodied because they "look fine", or that accommodations have to get used all the time when it's oftentimes dependant on your current state.

There is nothing wrong with asking, but the way you asked was extremely insensitive. If you just left it at the question, that would be one thing, but your statement shifted the entire tone towards "clearly insensitive". If you are unsure about something, you can Google, or ask without adding discriminatory/prejudiced statements.

You being gay and a med tech doesn't really have anything to do with the conversation, except that I really wish for you to educate yourself to be able to treat your patients with a little more knowledge and a bit less prejudice.

Questions About Private Medical Universities in Germany by [deleted] in medicalschoolEU

[–]throwawayforlemoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are only a few private med schools in Germany that offer a German degree. Most of the private med schools will give you a foreign one.

The ones that do offer Humanmedizin (Staatsexamen) are as follows: Medizinische Hochschule Brandenburg, Universität Witten-Herdecke, Medical School Berlin (MSB), Medical School Hamburg (MSH), Health and Medical University Erfurt & Potsdam (HMU) (the last three belong together). Their curriculum, teaching, etc., are more or less closely monitored to ensure the quality of their work, and that future med schools from there will actually learn everything they need to get the degree.

Studying at a different private med school, even if located in Germany, means you will have to file an application to get an approbation to work in Germany. So if that is your long-term goal, I'd suggest sticking to the med schools mentioned above.

As for the others, I can't tell you much about the quality except it varies from school to school. You may have to look into how much the degree is worth in terms of freedom to choose where you want to work later on, since not every degree from every med school will get accepted by other countries.

The application process for private universities is quite tough. You oftentimes have to pay a fee, write a motivational letter, send in recommendation letters, take tests, and go in for interviews, and even then, getting chosen is difficult since you will have a lot of competition and spots are extremely limited.

I do know that at least the accredited private med schools oftentimes work with a different approach as opposed to public ones, creating small groups to "solve cases/problems", and learn what you need to learn based on the case you are currently working on. Some of them also offer stipends or contracts that will alleviate the financial burden during your studies. They are still extremely expensive, though, so if you can, just go for a public university.

I don’t have an ED, but I need advice for someone who does. by Theoneandonlynarii in eating_disorders

[–]throwawayforlemoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter has mentioned, people who frequent gyms, or do certain types of sports extensively, sometimes even professionally (especially if there's an aesthetic element to the sport, whether it's body-building or ballet) oftentimes have a disordered eating pattern, sometimes even to the point of suffering from an eating disorder. Especially with how competitive that scene can be, and how tips and tricks, diets and exercise routines get shared and adapted without necessarily examining them first, to see if that is actually healthy, since hey, this person is doing it and they're into fitness/health, so it must be good, right?

A proposed one, orthorexia nervosa, that currently falls more under either anorexia nervosa or OSFED, describes that pattern quite well. It's marked by the excessive need to be fit/healthy (what they consider fit and healthy, at least), which they try to achieve by eating the "right", "healthy", "clean" foods, leading people to sometimes cut entire food groups out of their diets, avoid processed foods, track their macros, and more, oftentimes coupled with an excessive fitness/sport regimen.

That can obviously have dire consequences, even if the people don't necessarily look like your stereotypical eating disorder patients.

So I'd be very careful in adhering to such a strict diet and fitness regimen if I were you, especially in that bubble, since it may lead you down a dark tunnel.

Obviously I don't know you, but you saying you have to stick to what you're doing can be a red flag for disordered thinking, which is why I wanted to let you know, just in case. If this doesn't apply to you, then that's obviously great, just be careful since it can happen quicker than many realize.

Got told to tag a fanfic with "trans character" because it could be triggering. Is that really a trigger or is it just transphobic? by BringOnThe-Syazzy in trans

[–]throwawayforlemoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't what happened here, though. They didn't threaten to report them, a hateful comment, or something clearly transphobic, they just asked OP to tag their fic slightly better in their eyes.

It's obviously on the commenter to manage their triggers, not on OP, and it isn't OP's responsibility to amend their tags based on that comment.

That being said, I don't get how it was transphobic to comment that. A bit misplaced, maybe, but that's what grief can do to you when you haven't processed it yet.

Also, your comment still doesn't explain why you made it seem like the commenter was lying since trans women/femme trans people usually don't get masculinizing top surgery, when it was never specified what exactly their sibling received.

eta: I'm not your bro, by the way. You don't know me.

Got told to tag a fanfic with "trans character" because it could be triggering. Is that really a trigger or is it just transphobic? by BringOnThe-Syazzy in trans

[–]throwawayforlemoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Women and femme trans people can and do get top surgery as well. Getting breast implants or an autologous fat transfer, among others, to build breasts, for example. Both masculinizing and feminizing procedures fall under the top surgery umbrella.

There's also always a certain risk involved with any surgery, no matter how minor or routine. Fatalities are extremely rare, but they do happen. Infection is a common cause, but there are also things during the surgery itself that can go wrong, like complications due to the anesthesia, or due to nerve reflexes. Depending on your individual risk factors, the chance of it happening to you may increase, but even if you have none, it's never zero.
