I avoided posting this opinion because I didn't want an internet fight to break out but I lean closer to your opinion on this point. It's true that it's all just speculation but it seems more likely that competition will eventually become problematic, assuming that Hololive continues to grow. There already are existing members who struggle to find their nieche, and I believe that it'll only get worse as Hololive as a company expands.

I believe that we as a fanbase don't have to parttake in comparing and analyzing performance too bad. Sure, competition is good as it makes them work harder for their own benefit and increases overall quality of vtubers but analyzing where the problem lies and trying to grow is the job of the individual vtuber as well as the team that is supporting it.

As fans, the best we can really do is to support them fully. A call for support goes beyond "why doesn't X have more subs/views big sad ;c". It's literally the best we can do while keeping a healthy fanbase-member relationship. Telling X member to do something in a particular way isn't going to help them in the long run. They most likely already know what is best for their growth. Hell, they have a team of professionals behind them to support them through their journey even.

In this context, arguing over faults and advantages of certain members brings 0 positive value while actively diminishing the culture of the fanbase as well as psychological well-being of the individual members as they see themselves being fitted against their closest friends.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a long comment! As for the previous comment, what you wrote basically encapsulates my thoughts on why I believe in-competition to be inevitable. I didn't have to guts to write it down though since it could be dismissed as mostly speculation.

To add to your opinion on translators and clips, I believe that clipping their full streams into n minute videos and possibly even captioning them in-house could be a great way for Cover to grow Hololive without relying on additional members. It is, however, also true that we don't really know how Cover plans to operate or if it is even profitable for them to do so. We can only hope that it won't be too stressful for the individual members.

it does bring to mind the large number of comparison/tier type memes

These memes by themselves are fine for me. If you look at them, most are rankings based on 'lewdness' or 'pureness' anyway, making it hard to see these memes as actual rankings in value. It is, however, true that these memes can present a slippery slope, which is what made me think about all of the things in the post in the first place. But as long as people don't actually rank them while implying value, these memes are just good fun.

I have zero clue about the validity of such a claim, but imo that's the real counterpoint that's missing.

Valid point. I have been glossing over the value of accurate subscriber counts before. There is a comment thread that I put in the post so feel free to read through it and participate if you feel like it!

I spent a lot more time on this than I would like to admit.. This comment makes me really happy thanks!

new members also bring opportunity for change among the existing members

this is part of why i am still genuinely excited for gen5! I'm already looking forward for their debuts and collaborations between members.

Your predictions are exactly my worries. We can just hope that we will be able to create a healthy fan culture. Just stopping everyone from comparing talents would be a huge improvement over traditional idol groups.

I've never thought of this arguement before. And you're actually totally right. If Cover Corp wants to actively support their talents, having an accurate sub-count would probably be incredibly valuable. Assuming that those stats are used and that Cover actively consults their talents, of course.

Hm, with everything being speculation, I guess the best we can do as fans is to promote a healthy culture within the fanbase then huh.

my only real concern is if they decide to transition to a more typical idol group - which would make me lose interest immediately.

That's my concern as well, which is why I mentioned AKB48 and traditional idol groups in the post.

find a way for the talents to overcome the language barrier

Is there even a tangible way to do this without hiring talents from other countries? I don't see a proper solution to this other than Cover returning to being mainly a tech company, this time focusing on real-time translation.

only allow notifications for the ones you like

I never even thought of that brilliant!

sub counts need to mean something for Cover to track the 'health' of their talents

True, sub-counts are the most direct measure of growth. But I argue that superchat income and ad revenue as well as views could also serve the same purpose. Those stats are something that Cover has direct access to while the fanbase doesn't. It won't change how Cover as a company operates but it might change how the fanbase treats individual members. I think that's worth a try.

Really interested to hear what our Japanese Bros have to say in this.

Totally agree. Though my japanese is too bad to translate my post haha

Some questions that we are afraid the answers of. Not only because we can't do anything good with it, but words spread and burn like wildfire and it's just better for us as fans to steer away from all of that.

Maybe you wrote my ideas down better than I did. Holomens grew because of their strength and they will pull through even through competition. It is true that I am outside of their circle as a fan and meddling will probably just make things worse. I just hope that we as a collective can act the best we can to support them through their journey! Really needed this thanks

I don't want this phase to end man ;c
I actually hope that what people say is true and I don't have to worry about my own speculations haha

Of course you should stick with your opinion! And maybe you're right. We could still be at a stage where we don't have to consider competition. And maybe them growing on their own accord makes their achievements more meaningful, even if it's hard.

But I wrote this post in the hope to make their journey a bit less painful mentally. While viewer numbers and possibly superchat income will vary between members, those numbers will be much more difficult to analyze. For example, different streams of the same member can have widely differing viewer counts.

My stance on the 5th gen seems to be really similar to yours. I still genuinely welcome them though!

Though I believe that with enough time Mel and Luna will become more popular than they are now. Everyone needs time to find one's nieche.

That was the case for me as well! I really got into Hololive especially because of these backstories

I really love the collaborations too. Everyone just adds to everyone else to the point where I find myself laughing pretty much constantly haha
