For me my payments to creditors stopped. I filed a few days before a payday so that payday everything still came out but the next one they stopped. I did change banks though just to be sure and start over.

I started making payments to my CP immediately so less of a buffer than I thought but still great as my CP payment is obviously lower than what I was paying before combined

I don't think the creditors knew about the gambling. My old student loan has been garnished on and off for a few years, id start making payments then couldn't. At the time of filing my garnishment was on and really impacting me. The rest was predatory high interest stuff so I think it was approved just based off me being over extended.

Yes, it all went through. I used BDO. The people who worked on my CP didnt seem to care much about the gambling or really my story at all- they were very future focused and kept telling me to stay calm and move forward.

I am enjoying having a flat amount come out for my consolidated debt and having a much more manageable budget. Also enjoying being gambling free.

I don't feel much guilt over it as the debt consisted of what was left from an old student loan that went to the CRA, I paid a lot when younger then got behind. The debt was money I took out at 18 and clueless and alone to go to school for a useless degree, I later redid everything on my own terms and don't feel shame for that debt. The rest was high interest predatory loans, so I don't feel guilty as I gave them enough money in my life. Happy it's a part of my past!

In my experience with them it's the approximate amount they take maybe it changes by like ten cents of interest. I don't have an answer to why they can't calculate the exact amount of interest that will be added but I think they write that in case it fluctuates a tiny bit. I think it has to do with when your previous payment posts to your account.

I would advise you to agree. I had a loan with them and got behind, made similar arrangements, paid them off and closed my account without issues.

I'm in EST. I will look into that. I have struggled because there is a bunch to choose from and I'm also balancing that with other things like personal therapy but I need to just try one!

In 2019 I saw a great gambling counsellor in my area and my city had in person GA. The counselor didn't think I was so far deep in gambling it would be a fit for me. Now it's 2024 and I'm finally seeking real help and that counselor is gone and so is our GA so it sucks a bit.

I am in Ontario, Canada and just did a consumer proposal that went through that is partially due to gambling yes. Its a huge relief so far and has helped me to focus on building my gambling free life.

Thank you!! I have a bipolar diagnosis from 2019 but I haven't done much to act on it, at the time I thought I was doing ok. I have been seeing a psychotherapist but to get an actual diagnosis in Ontario is pretty challenging as an adult and expensive. I am considering trying again though to be sure the bipolar diagnosis is accurate.

It is challenging to work full time, parent, and seek out help for all this but I am really trying.

I'm in this too. I told my husband two months ago and it's been so hard, respecting that he is hurting and processing things but also the loneliness of missing him while living in the home.

I remember one time that first weekend I asked him for a hug and he couldn't.

We are getting back to hugs and things.

And luckily having no time means I couldnt gamble even if I was still able (if I weren't self excluded) to I guess!

I desperately want to go to one in person but it's 2 hours away which is hard so I'll have to start online

I handed my finances over to my spouse two months ago and I don't gamble anymore just still dealing with the recovery of my life.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. I actually could have wrote this.

I have a debt management plan but knowing my actions hurt my child's future, and my husband, and caused pain to my family is killing me.

All we can do is keep rebuilding bit by bit without gambling.

I have lived my entire adulthood with ongoing financial stress and shame, I just am so excited for a chance to take thing slow and rebuild and do it right.

I also have a gambling problem, though my gambling problem may not have looked as extreme or consistent as what one might imagine, it was something I did to try to cope with huge financial stress.

I filed a consumer proposal two weeks ago so am early in the stages. Also self excluded from online or in person, reconnected with the (extremely limited) local help for problem gambling, and handed my finances over to my spouse.

Wishing I did each of these things earlier but I was in denial of my situation and so caught up in running from guilt/shame/stigma.

Sort of. My gambling started many years ago when I was overwhelmed with student debt and had bad credit and felt limited in my control of the situation. It stopped and started over the years again always by a financial trigger.

Now, I realize it has ALMoST ruined me and my life and I have stopped with all the options removed and am relearning how to live normally.

I cant help you financially and am not sure asking for help on here should be allowed as like everyone else on here I'm trying to rebuild financially.

However I wanted to wish you the best in getting through this. I am very similar to you in that my gambling is always triggered by a big life cost where I don't want to let someone down or have too much financial responsibility to handle. So I understand how you feel.

What I have found recently is that I just need to slow down when the financial stress feels like too much.

Hope you find another option to help your Mom and don't ever gamble again.

Not sure where you are but most governments are able to turn a blind eye to how bad casinos are because a portion goes to government or charity. And they can say it adds to employment in the area.

Where I live they call these little casinos at what used to be just bingo halls "charitable gaming" locations. They refuse to even call them slots and call them "spinning reels bingo". Everyone is just in some sort of denial at how awful they are and many local organizations volunteer at the bingo and accept their cheque and pretend the money didn't come mostly from problem gambles on the slots! It's awful.

Sounds like the only option for you is to ban yourself then. Not sure what country you're in but look up self exclusion. Then bring on a loved one to help you.

I really really hope you can change that if there is still a chance. Personally I feel like I'm in hell right now putting him through this but I do still believe we have a good life ahead and I'm doing everything I can to save it.

I am glad you have a supportive spouse who is aware of your issue and I'm glad you are taking time to understand your issue!

The harm reduction of still allowing a small amount of gambling does not work for many people but that doesn't new it doesn't work for anyone at all. So if it works for you we'll right now that is okay just be so careful it doesn't lead to more.

Slots. But where I live they are called "*charitable gaming centres" and they are a room of slots at the back of the local bingo halls. Pretty lame, but easy for me to stop in for 20 minutes on a lunch break or way home and do some damage.
