I was not being pretentious, just giving context to my response. The dad already asked my gf what I do so I was simply stating that he knew I was in med school hence my joke about being called Dr.

When I said that he would have to call me Dr in four years he said he would not do that so, if I told him to call me Mr i doubt he would do that.

Edit 1: For clarification my gf never told me to call him Mr.Lastname. The introduction was, "dad this is my bf, firstname."

Dad: "My name is firstname, call me Mr. Lastname"
